Just announced...Ashland University in Ashland, Ohio... Dropping men's soccer... Division II that competes in the GLIAC (Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference). Shocking enough, men's soccer is the only sport that will be dropped. They cited some lousy reasons. There will be 9 men's sports and 10 women's sports that remain -- leaving them at 19 overall, ahead of the 13.9 overall and 17.7 conference averages for DII membership in combined sports. My speculation is that the dropping of men's soccer allows Ashland to just utilize those scholarships for other men's sports. The restructure there is easier than adding another women's sport. Again, just my speculation. Sucks for those 24 men's soccer student-athletes. Boo to you Ashland. You suck anyway for having yellow and purple as your school colors. And...for having an eagle as your mascot. Not only do you have the ugliest color combination, but also one of the most generic mascots in intercollegiate athletics.
Naw, not really. Just hate seeing men's soccer being dropped. And...seeing it dropped this late is awful. Purple and yellow is a disgusting combination too.
As a Laker fan since the early 90s... I strongly disagree about that statement. Purple and yellow is a GREAT combination.
The decision and way it has been disclosed is atrocious. No other alternatives were even explored. Hopefully the administration sees sense and reverses the decision and explores other avenues. Having just spent a LOT of money on one of the best soccer facilities in Division II (and even Division I) I am amazed this decision has been made. On the plus side the intramural ultimate frisbee teams dont have to worry about time clashes now! Well done AU!

Although most Lakers longtime fans say purple and GOLD. Sorry for the loss of men's soccer at Ashland.
As you probably know, The LA Lakers began as the Minneapolis Lakers (land of 10,000 lakes) - George Mikan (dominating center). I believe that the orignal owner of the Vikings was involved in the management of the Lakers.
Yes, exactly. There are precious few lakes in Los Angeles. The new owners kept the name and the colors.
All in all, Ashland made a rash decision to cut Soccer. If not mistaken, I believe Ashland has been ranked in the D2 top twenty several times during recent decades. Ugly colors and all, this was not a bum program. Shameful!
When we were first dating, my wife once asked me why they were called the Lakers and without missing a beat I told her they used to play in an arena on the shores of Lake Los Angeles. "Oh," she said "that makes sense." A few years later we're in LA and she says completely out of the blue "where is Lake Los Angeles?"
