It’s crazy to think about how massive Saint-Étienne used to be in French football. Those 10 league titles and that legendary run to the European Cup final in '76 still command so much respect. Unfortunately, modern football is unforgiving; without massive financial backing or major corporate investment, it's incredibly tough for a historic club like ASSE to sustain elite success or easily bounce back to where they belong. That being said, the club is still grinding to rebuild the squad. There’s a fresh transfer rumor coming out today that looks like a very solid step in the right direction. Saint-Étienne is currently in advanced talks to sign 24-year-old Algerian defender Sohaib Nair from Guingamp. He's coming off two very consistent seasons in Ligue 2 and is looking for a more ambitious project to push his way back into the Algerian national team setup (he was closely monitored by Petković but narrowly missed out on the 2026 World Cup squad).
