the most popular team in England? God knows they're the only team most Americans know about. Are they basically the equivalent of the New York Yankees in England? i.e. do they have a large following across the the country even in cities other than Mancheter

Yup, you answered your own question. Huge fan base, with lots of supporters clubs.

Yea they are the most popular and most unpopular team in the UK, if you get what im saying.
The London clubs and Liverpool may have fan bases nearly as big though.

But in this country of fickle fans, the Arse now have most fans-more than half of English football fans, and Chelsea fans are quickly catching up with United.

ummm, "London clubs"? it's only Arsenal that realistically get anywhere near Man Utd in England in terms of fanbase.

    i reckon it's:
    Man Utd
    Liverpool
    Arsenal
    ...

    The rest are miles behind.

You wont see many Arsenal shirts up north, but you'll see plenty of Manutd shirts, while down south you still see plenty of Manutd shirts. Liverpool are also widely supported. Chelsea have are like maybe Accrington Stanley.

I thought so too myself, but with the history behind the clubs, Liverpool might just be more popular than the Arse, but that should change once (if) the latter win the Champions League in coming years.
