For him. For England, it gets Dawson closer to the pitch.

Damn, that sucks. Then they will start someone who is faster and better.

IMO - this is England's best XI atm.

As badly as he has played this year, it is asking a lot for someone else with limited experience to come in and perform in massive games. No matter what people think, when his head is right and he's playing well there are not many better defenders about.

Ferdinand is doubtful enough as it is, to lose Terry as well would be a huge blow for England.

Damn it. There goes the own goal I was counting on. Not to worry though, hopefully Carragher will take his place.

Yeah mixed news. If he were playing up to his best, then this would be a plus for the US. Since he is not and the distractions he brings, it might help them.

I rate Dawson highly, he's had a few good seasons recently. But he doesn't have the experience that Terry has. It's between Dawson and King for Terry's spot should he not be able to play.

Big blow for England obviously, they have a lot of injury concerns of their own.

Carrick likely won't make the 23.

You'd put Baines ahead of Ashley Cole? I also think Ledley King is their most naturally gifted defender. If Terry doesn't make it then King starts imo.

At current form, I'd rate Adam Johnson ahead of him.

I put him there for experience. The man started and went 120 minutes in a Champion's League final. I think it would be foolish to ignore the big match pedigree Carrick has. Huddlestone is probably more talented, but he's never been in this position. At least with Carrick you know he won't go "holy sh!t, this is the world cup!" Until Barry is healthy, he's probably the cover you'd want in the group stage. None of the sides involved offer a great threat in the central midfield anyway. Not unless Bradley moves either Donovan or Dempsey central, and that's unlikely.

Obviously, Cole is miles ahead of Baines.. King and Rio will make a formidable pair in defence.

If you want assists, Baines has 5 more than Cole this past season, but I agree in that Cole is a lot more experienced, and one of the best LBs in the world. He was talking about current form though and Cole has been injured since February til a few weeks ago.

If they can be kept fit...doubtful...2 of the most injury prone players about right now.

Current form is a big part of it, but also just think Baines is a more technically gifted player, and isn't far behind defensively. But like I said before, I also realize I might be wrong about him and recognize I'm in the minority with my opinion there.

I thought long and hard about King over Dawson. But isn't he also coming off some knee issues?

It would be silly to play Baines ahead of a fit A. Cole. Ashley Cole returned to Chelsea looking as good as ever. So on current form, he is still not as good as Ashley.

He will always have knee issues. But, King has played 3 or 4 consecutive matches, and says he is ready to play any match during the World Cup.

He was monumental towards the run-in at the end of the season, helping Spurs to clinch 4th. He played three times in one week (vs. Portsmouth, vs. Arsenal, vs. Chelsea) if I'm not mistaken. But yeah, both are injury prone....still your best available CB pairing if both are fit.

King and Dawson aren't a bad pairing either, should Rio have to miss a match. Having played together will help...

True but that was the first time in how long? Years and years, I'm guessing.

Dawson, in my view, is the most in form English CB. He and King have a good partnership at Spurs, with Rio still struggling with injuries it could well be the partnership going in to the first game. I just would not trust King (or Rio) for that matter, to be able to play to a high standard without getting injured in such a short time period as the WC is.

King played like a World beater in his latest match. Rio played well for United in his last match also. Both have a month to continue to recover.

I'm not denying that, all I am saying is, I would not really put faith in those 2 surviving the World Cup without picking up an injury. I'm not questioning their performances.
