Not really MLS related but this article talks about why salary cap may not work in football. I figured some of you may be interested.

Note: The article does not reflect my opinion on salary cap. I am in the school of thoughts that believes both regulations, implementing or not implementing salary cap system, have its positive and negative sides.

    An interesting point:

Scadamore is indeed correct. Teams in the Premiership spent, on average, about 55% of their revenue on player wages. Generally speaking, the bigger the club, the lower the percentage:

    Arsenal 45%
    Tottenham Hotspur 46%
    Manchester United 47%

    Liverpool 50%
    Sunderland 58%
    Everton 59%

    Manchester City 66%
    Aston Villa 66.6%
    Bolton Wanderers 67%
    Chelsea 68%

    Blackburn Rovers 70%
    Middlesbrough 73%
    Newcastle United 74%
    Fulham 73%
    West Ham United 76%
    Hull City 77%
    Portsmouth 78%

    West Bromwich Albion 80%
    Wigan Athletic 89%

    Stoke City 106%

    Total 55%

When teams start moving over 70%, they may get into trouble, but look again at the teams doing it. They aren't the big clubs, they are the small clubs trying to stay in the league.

That's why the salary cap model is done in conjunction with revenue sharing.
