de luna - IMO the best defender on the team
casillas - attack minded mid with tons of flair. very creative with the ball and decisions.
rivera - run of the mill forward
chore - decent job in the defensive mid, but id rather have zemanski or minda

Nice, I'm glad. Both De luna and Casillas are players who I think will be back to Guad once they mature and develop a bit more. Rivera actually never played for Chivas, he actually was on trial but I guess they liked him enough to send him to Chivas USA and see how he does. Chore is a solid d mid, I'm sure he will become an important player for the team.

Don't worry, once opening day comes, you will be happy they made all these decisions. I've seen firsthand from the stands, so I know what I'm talking about. There's a reason we are undefeated with only 2 ties. The best part is we have depth in our starters and bench.

In a former life, Jose Luis Sanchez Sola probably sold snake oil. Or big city bridges. Or beachfront property in the Mojave. How else does one explain his insistence that the Chivas USA team he has constructed over the last two months will be a competitive MLS side?

The current incarnation of the Goats has been cobbled together with spare parts from parent club C.D. Guadalajara as well as holdovers from last year's squad that finished with the second-worst record in the league. All of which creates a haunting sense of deja vu for the club's fans as it's the same approach to roster building the Goats used during its expansion season back in 2005 -- when the team finished dead last.

Yet when Sanchez Sola (better known as Chelis) is asked what the difference is between his team and the 2005 version, his response is simple. "In 2005, the owners have this idea, but don't give it to Chelis," he said via telephone. "Now they have the Mexican players, the American Latino players and Chelis."

But before you dismiss his assessment as bravado and nothing more, it pays to look at Chelis' track record, a man who never reached the professional ranks as a player but as a manager has made a habit of convincing modest players that they're capable of great things. He began accumulating his coaching certification in 1995, eventually parlaying it into a job managing the youth side of his hometown club, Puebla FC. He took over the first team in 2006, won promotion to what was then known as the Primera Division in 2007 and took the team to the semifinals in the 2009 Clausura.

Along the way, he was fired and brought back twice at the players' insistence.

"Chelis is unlike any coach I've ever had, that's for sure," said current U.S. international Herculez Gomez, who played for Chelis at Puebla in 2010. "He's one of those guys that when you first meet him, you don't really know if he's serious or not. He's extremely charismatic, sometimes overly emotional, hot tempered. But he's one of those guys who finds something that he can use to get to you emotionally to have you kind of work for him, and he uses it. Down the years, he's had a lot of success with very little."

Gomez is a prime example. Cast aside by MLS, the California native led the Mexico top flight in scoring with 10 goals in 15 matches during the 2010 Clausura. That willingness to take a chance on other clubs' castoffs has bred intense loyalty from Chelis' players, although sometimes the manager's support manifested itself in bizarre ways. Gomez recalled how while at Puebla, the players hadn't been paid for two months and were considering going on strike. Chelis had no sooner convinced his charges to train that day when the club's owners arrived asking to meet with the players.

Gomez said, "Chelis, he's smoking a cigarette, sitting on a soccer ball, and you could see him shaking his head, and before the owners could say one word he says, 'Ugh! Just go away, all of you [owners], just go away. Do me a favor and don’t talk to my players today!' I'm sitting there just in awe that he's talking to them like that. And they're sitting there like, 'What do you mean? These are our players.'"

"It might have been disrespectful to the owners, but it showed everybody on the team that he was there for us."

Chelis also forged a reputation for playing attacking soccer, one that he intends to continue with Chivas USA through the use of high pressure and superior numbers in midfield.

"The people that pay for tickets like goals, they want a show," said Chelis. "Maybe my team makes goals, and maybe my team gives up goals. Maybe my team will lose, maybe they will win. But the people like a show; 0-0 is not a show. This is my music to the players and the players like it."

Well, at least those fortunate enough to stick around as the Goats' roster purge in recent weeks has bordered on a fire sale. Veteran defender James Riley was shipped to D.C. United for a second round pick in the 2015 Supplemental Draft. Former All-Star midfielder Shalrie Joseph was practically gift-wrapped and sent to Seattle along with two draft picks and a swap in the allocation order just so Chivas wouldn't have to pay all of his salary.

Given the stated aim of owner Jorge Vergara to implement a more Latin style with Latino players, the impression has been that Chivas is simply ridding itself of players who don't fit that demographic. To be fair, Latino players like Juan Pablo Angel and Alejandro Moreno have also been let go while the likes of goalkeeper Dan Kennedy and defender Bobby Burling still remain.

But a more pointed criticism is that the new Chivas hierarchy hasn't grasped the concept of extracting value from other clubs when it engages in player transactions. When asked if this was the case, Chelis said "Maybe." But he then insisted that simple economics have driven the vast majority of the player moves.

"The real result is when the games begin," he said. "This team now doesn't have money, and the project is empty because the players that went were very expensive. The group we have, I think we have a good team and good talent."

Following Wednesday's training session, Kennedy remarked how he had been impressed with how quickly the team had bought into Chelis' methods, especially considering the amount of turnover.

But Kennedy knows that a charismatic manager and hard work from players will only carry the team so far, even with talented attackers like Miller Bolannos and Juan Agudelo. Overall there just doesn’t seem to be enough quality. Chelis remarked that the club is aiming to bring both Gabriel and Michael Farfan in from Philadelphia, although it seems inconceivable that the Union would let either player go. Otherwise, the Chivas manager said that his roster will be comprised of the 28 players currently in training camp. Add it all up, and even Gomez -- as big a Chelis proponent as there is -- remains unsure as to whether his former boss will succeed.

"MLS is such a different animal," Gomez said. "I don't think people realize how competitive it is, and how different it is, where they have their own internal rules, and the draft, and the different player movements. If you don't understand that I think MLS will be very difficult."

Meanwhile, Chelis continues to sell the idea of a team on the rise. "In October, call me please and tell me the talent of this team."

That implies Chelis will still be around. If that’s the case, that will bode well for both manager and club.

Interesting interview. I've always said, Farfan brothers (former academy players) should have been with Chivas USA as HG players in the first place. Does anyone know how long is Chelis contract with the club?

To get probable starters from Philly who everyone knows Chivas want, what could Chivas possibly give them? Rights to Bornstein & MacKenzie? What high draft picks do they have left? I assume any allocation they have or will spend on the players in camp.

Se acerca el último fin de semana de pretemporada de la MLS, y un equipo ha conseguido acaparar titulares aunque para su técnico no necesariamente por lo que él quisiera. Chivas USA tiene nuevo dueño, nueva dirigencia, nuevo entrenador y los movimientos de jugadores también dieron de qué hablar.
Goal.com conversó con José Luis Sánchez Solá, ‘Chelís’ y su filosofía de “choque”.
Goal. ¿Cómo evalúa la pretemporada?
Sánchez. “Muy buena. Grupo nuevo, jugadores nuevos, técnico nuevo, dueños nuevos. Hemos ido avanzando y cada vez que hemos tenido un examen lo hemos hecho mejor. Hoy puedo decir que todo el mundo sabe a qué juega, todo el mundo sabe lo que nos propusimos y yo entiendo que todo el mundo quiere hacer lo mismo”.
Goal. ¿Tiene el equipo cerado?
Sánchez. “Desde el principio el plantel ha estado completo, y nos hemos tenido que ir deshaciendo de jugadores. Llegó un momento en el que podías ver 30 jugadores en el campo y fuera otros 6 a 7 que pertenecían al equipo. Entonces cosas administrativas, pero yo creo que el 80 por ciento de los que empezaron estamos”.
Goal. ¿No llega nadie más?
Sánchez. “Yo por mí dejaría el equipo así. Por alguna cosa administrativa, puede llegar un muchacho Farfán (delantero) y yo felizmente lo acepto. Pero no es que yo esté en desacuerdo con alguna posición o que necesite algo”.
Goal. ¿Pareciera que le arman el equipo?
Sánchez. “No, mira es así. Me senté el primer día con el señor Real (José Luis), quien era el que se pensaba iba a ser el técnico. Después la entidad tuvo otros planes con él. Y me dijo, que se iba a quedar con este plantel, me lo mostró. Y a partir de ahí yo le hago caso porque sé de sus buenas intenciones. Traje a Joaquin Velasquez y Walter Vilches, cuando el presidente llegó se apuntalaron un poco más. Pero jugadores de afuera no vienen muchos. Sin amarrar navajas, no es que lo armen ellos o lo arme yo. Es un conjunto con lo que ya había”.
Goal. Mucho se ha dicho de la salida de jugadores y de una supuesta política de Chivas USA para salir de los jugadores anglo y quedarse pronto solo con talento latino. ¿Qué hay de cierto?
Sánchez. “Cero, cero. El problema no es deportivo, Así lo tienen que aclarar. La salida de los jugadores es de presupuesto, este equipo está excedido en más de 1 millón de dólares en presupuesto, así que había que acortarlo. Es demasiado grosero y hasta racista empezar a hablar de anglos y no anglos o latinos o no latinos. Este equipo tiene sus características y necesita tener una base sólida y una identidad con los 12 millones de aficionados que hay disponibles en los Ángeles. Y la Liga también lo quiere, porque si la liga no lo quisiera no lo permitía. Vamos dándole la identidad que necesita el equipo no la identidad que piensan mentes cochambrosas en pensar en anglos y latinos. Los anglos que están muy contentos, pregúnteles”
Goal. Pero los que se fueron parece que no se fueron contentos…
Sánchez. “Son presupuestos, son dineros que ellos querían. Ampliación de contratos o contratos garantizados que el club no los puede ofrecer en este momento. Deportivamente no tengo ningún problema con ninguno ni el club tampoco, pero lo que ellos pretendían no se puede. Yo soy entrenador, no el portavoz del club, aquí hay un dueño y un presidente y yo no he visto que los entrevisten para preguntar esto. Todo es especulación, y lo que es peor especulación de redes sociales, es el deterioro del periodismo”.

“Mi cultura es la cultura del choque. En todas partes choco porque es la manera que tengo de comunicarme y yo me reniego a pensar que me trajeron por mi cara bonita. El día que no haga lo que estoy haciendo ahorita no voy a estar. No concibo mi profesión de otra manera”.

Sánchez. “No, ese es otro rumor. En la mesa a mi ningún directivo me ha puesto ese nombre. Yo sé quién es, haría mal en decirte que no sé quién es. Pero nadie me lo ha puesto en la mesa. Además, no soy presidente ni administrador sino entrenador, hablemos de fútbol, no de contratos”.
Goal. ¿A qué va a jugar Chivas USA desde lo táctico?
Sánchez. “Tres atrás, cinco en el medio y dos adelante. Lo que pretende Chivas es encontrarse con la pelota. El juego de Chivas empieza cuando no tiene la pelota tratando de recuperarla lo más cerca al arco rival. Y ahí rápido y con buenas decisiones pasar el balón por el área. Mientras más pasemos el balón por el área más negocio podemos hacer. Entiendo, y lo vi en los cinco partidos que hemos hecho que tenemos la gente convencida y con las características físicas técnicas para hacerlo. Muy verticales y muy por afuera”.
Goal. ¿Aprovechando la estatura de Erik Correa y Juan Agudelo?
Sánchez. “No, sabes, la altura de ellos dos nos sirve mucho por si no podemos pasar la media cancha con balón controlado. Entonces no la podemos brincar por el aire y ellos pueden apoyarse en tres enlaces que vienen de atrás. Yo no les veo gran remate de cabeza, sí les veo que pueden jugar de espaldas, que pueden botarse a las bandas y ganar la espalda pero de cara algol no los veo como grandes definidores de cabeza”.
Goal. ¿Ya tiene el once con el que quiere abrir la temporada?
Sánchez. “Si, lo tengo, espero que no se me lesione nadie el sábado. Pero en el último partido hice 10 cambios y el equipo nunca mostró diferencia de titulares y suplentes, o sea que todo mundo, y es difícil, concibe esa idea. El que menos lo ha hecho es Minda por la lesión, pero el tendrá que entrar en ello”.
Goal. ¿Y si le pido el once?
Sánchez. “No mano, es una falta de respeto al jugador. Pero creo que el sábado voy a usar al cuadro que creo que será el que prepare el partido que viene. Y acostumbro cuatro o cinco horas antes del partido poner en mi Twitter el equipo titular”
Goal. ¿Quería o no a Carlos ‘pescadito’ Ruíz?
Sánchez. “Yo lo pedí, porque me gusta el delantero referencia, me gusta mucho y también por desconocimiento de lo que tenía. Como una referencia en mi ataque, pero no se dio. Qué bueno igual que llegue a la Liga porque es un buen jugador”.
Goal. ¿Está molesto con el asunto de los rumores por la salida de jugadores y demás?, parece incómodo

Who do we have left that would make Philly want to trade the Farfan brothers?

Aside from Agudelo and Kennedy, who I'd hope the team wouldn't trade (but you never know), there is nobody who has proven themselves in the MLS that would make the trade feasible.

Don't get me wrong, I think we have talent on the team...it's just nothing worthy (nor MLS proven) of making Philly want to trade away two of their better players...

CARSON, Calif. (Friday, February 22, 2013) – Chivas USA has picked up the contract options for this season on seven of its players, the club announced today. Forwards Juan Agudelo and Tristan Bowen; midfielders Jorge Villafaña and Marvin Iraheta; defender Bobby Burling; and goalkeepers Tim Melia and Patrick McLain are set to return for the Rebaño Angelino’s 2013 MLS season under the guidance of new Head Coach Jose Luis Sanchez Sola “El Chelis.”
The Red-and-White organization also announced today that it has waived center back Rauwshan McKenzie.

McKenzie was waived. That dude cost us more than a couple of games last season. Agudelo was picked up? Does that mean he is not leaving this summer?
I read on twitter that Chivas USA also signed Josue Soto former Houston Dynamo academy player who was released not to long ago. Again, it was twitter. Could be BS. When is the dateline for the final roster?Anyone know?
