Time to review the European relegation battles: EPL: Brenden Aaronson (Leeds, 19/20, Risk: High) Tyler Adams " Weston McKennie " La Liga: Yunus Musah (Valencia, 17/20, Risk: Moderate) Bundesliga: John Brooks (Hoffenheim, 14/18, Risk: Low) Justin Che " Ligue 1: Erik Palmer-Brown (Troyes, 19/20, Risk: High --virtually relegated) Greek Super League: Caleb Stanko (Lamia, 12/14, Risk: Moderate --hangs on last game @ Ionikos) 2. Bundesliga: George Bello (Arminia, 16/18, Risk: Moderate) Nathaniel Brown (Nuremberg, 14/18, Risk: Low) Bryang Kayo " Ryan Malone (Hansa, 15/18, Risk: Low) Scottish Premier: Ian Harkes (Dundee, 10/12, Risk: Moderate) Serbian Superliga: Romain Gall (Mladost Novi Sad, 16/16, Risk: High) Cyprus First Division: Mac Bean Naggar (Doxa, 11/14, Risk: Low) 3.Liga: Nicolas Carrera (Zwickau, 19/20, Risk: High --virtually relegated) Johan Gomez " Already Relegated: #1 Forrest Lasso (Sundsvall, Allsvenskan) #2 Joe Corona " #3 Kobi Henry (Reims II, Championnat National 2) #4 Ricardo Pepi (Groningen, Eredivisie) Projected Total: 11 --lower than 12 last season.
Updates: Lamia beat Ionikos and is safe, Stanko remains in the Greek First Division. Already Relegated: #1 Forrest Lasso (Sundsvall, Allsvenskan) #2 Joe Corona " #3 Kobi Henry (Reims II, Championnat National 2) #4 Ricardo Pepi (Groningen, Eredivisie) #5 Nicolas Carrera (Zwickau, 3.Liga) #6 Johan Gomez " #7 Erik Palmer-Brown (Troyes, Ligue 1) After defeat @ Wolfsburg, Hoffenheim's (Brooks, Che) risk of relegation is now Moderate. After Rostock's (Malone) win @ Sandhausen, risk of relegation is virtually nil, but Nuremberg's (Brown, Kayo) has been upgraded to Moderate. At this point, it seems it's either Arminia (Bello) or Nuremberg going down.
Luca Koleosho, who plays for Italy's U19 but is born in the USA, so still eligible for a switch, is about to get relegated with Espanyol (La Liga). Since I only consider active* players already in the US system, I won't include him in the count. --- * Active = has played in at least one league game.
Mladost couldn't beat Napredak and Romain Gall was relegated. Already Relegated: #1 Forrest Lasso (Sundsvall, Allsvenskan) #2 Joe Corona " #3 Kobi Henry (Reims II, Championnat National 2) #4 Ricardo Pepi (Groningen, Eredivisie) #5 Nicolas Carrera (Zwickau, 3.Liga) #6 Johan Gomez " #7 Erik Palmer-Brown (Troyes, Ligue 1) #8 Romain Gall (Mladost Novi Sad, Serbian Superliga) After consecutive wins @ Celta and vs. Real, Valencia risk of relegation changed to Low. After win vs. Union and Bochum draw @ Hertha, Hoffenheim is safe. Dundee should be relegated next game. After their loss vs. Kilmarnock their risk is High. May 29 is the last day of the Cypriot FD. Doxa is 38/-24, barely above the red line and Enosis (37/-11). Both teams play away --to Limassol and Famagusta respectively. Doxa risk upgraded to Moderate after defeat vs. Salamis. Only a miracle could save Leeds. After Arminia failed to defeat Paderborn at home, risk of relegation changed to High. With Bello and Harkes likely undergoing relegation too, the projection changes to 13 relegated players, breaking last season's record (12) and making this our season with the most players relegated so far.
We tied our record last season already, with 12 relegated players. Already Relegated: #1 Forrest Lasso (Sundsvall, Allsvenskan) #2 Joe Corona " #3 Kobi Henry (Reims II, Championnat National 2) #4 Ricardo Pepi (Groningen, Eredivisie) #5 Nicolas Carrera (Zwickau, 3.Liga) #6 Johan Gomez " #7 Erik Palmer-Brown (Troyes, Ligue 1) #8 Romain Gall (Mladost Novi Sad, Serbian Superliga) #9 Ian Harkes (Dundee, Scottish Premier League) #10 Tyler Adams (Leeds, Premier League) #11 Brenden Aaronson " #12 Weston McKennie " We still have to go: La Liga: Luca de la Torre (Celta, 17/20, Risk: Moderate) Yunus Musah (Valencia, 15/20, Risk: Low) 2.Bundesliga: George Bello (relegation playoff vs. Wiesbaden, Risk: Moderate)
Add Bello to the list. We broke last season record (12 relegated) for a total of 25 Yanks Abroad relegated in the last 2 seasons: Relegated 21/22: #1 Julian Green (Fürth, BuLi --> 2.BuLi) #2 Patrick Tillman " #3 Josh Sargent (Norwich, EPL --> Champ.) #4 Tyler Boyd (Rizespor, Süper Lig --> 1.Lig) #5 Jose Gallegos (SønderjyskE, Superliga --> First Division) #6 George Bello (Arminia, BuLi --> 2.BuLi) #7 Gianluca Busio (Venezia, Serie A --> Serie B) #8 Tanner Tessmann " #9 Matt Miazga (Alavés, LL --> LL2) #10 Luca de la Torre (Heracles, Ered --> Eerste) #11 Jonathan Gomez (Real Sociedad B, LL2 --> Primera RFEF) #12 Charlie Kelman (Gillingham, EFL L1 --> EFL L2) Relegated 22/23: #1 Forrest Lasso (Sundsvall, Allsvenskan --> Superettan) #2 Joe Corona " #3 Kobi Henry (Reims II, Championnat National 2 --> CN3) #4 Ricardo Pepi (Groningen, Eredivisie --> Eerste Divisie) #5 Nicolas Carrera (Zwickau, 3.Liga --> Regionalliga) #6 Johan Gomez " #7 Erik Palmer-Brown (Troyes, Ligue 1 --> Ligue 2) #8 Romain Gall (Mladost Novi Sad, Serbian Superliga --> First League) #9 Ian Harkes (Dundee, Scottish Premier League --> Championship) #10 Tyler Adams (Leeds, Premier League --> EFL Championship) #11 Brenden Aaronson " #12 Weston McKennie " #13 George Bello (Arminia, 2.Bundesliga --> 3.Liga) It's impossible to put a positive spin on this.
Since I believe this is a pay to pay thing, I'm just mentioning this player's move to Germany here. However, in the past, players in programs like this have eventually moved on to other clubs.
Speculation that there will be a lot of European migration from the 2008-2010 age groups: It's become super clear to me over the last couple of days that MLS academies are going to bleed top prospects to Europe in the 08-10 age groups at an unprecedented rate. The path to Europe has never been easier and kids/agents know it.— Matt Hartman (@MattSHartman) June 28, 2023
British Trialspotters operate even across the Atlantic: Sunderland have two goalkeepers training with them over in #America….Picture on the left - Jude Bosshardt, San Antonio FC 3rd choice goalkeeper.Picture on the right - we have no clue who it is yet. I'm not sure I'm interpreting this correctly, but it seems to indicate that the US Youth Soccer Europe program (essentially, a gateway to ODP program for American kids living in Europe, many of them in military or military-adjacent families) has a team in a German league, which seems pretty cool. https://www.rheinpfalz.de/lokal/kai...iten-sieg-im-zweiten-spiel-_arid,5541900.html
From what I can see, they are in the 9th (of 10) division in that area. So they’re teenagers playing against grown men, which should be a good experience for them. From my experience, this level is technically a bit lower than a good D3 college team, and far below from a fitness perspective, as can be seen in the main picture in Dave’s link.
Yeah, for me I just wasn't aware that the program did this -- thought it was mostly camps and training sessions, but maybe I just missed a development over the years.
I don't recall hearing this name before -- came up in a story about Carver Miller: Price A. Thomas grew up competing for SOCA in Charlottesville and the Richmond Kickers, and went on to start every game during his 4 years at The College of William and Mary, earning all-CAA honors on 3 occasions. Price garnered interest domestically and abroad, and following graduation competed professionally in Turkey, Germany, & Sweden. https://www.cvillealliancefc.org/ma...homas&text=Price A.,CAA honors on 3 occasions. https://www.c-ville.com/going-pro
Noting some info on a program called International Soccer Academy which helped Caleb Simmons earn a trial and spot at Hertha Berlin. From what I can tell, they organize entire youth teams of internationals that are hosted at a club's academy. I guess if a player impresses from there, then they might be brought into the club's academy like Simmons was. Looks like they host teams at Bayern Munich, Schalke, Hertha, and Cadiz per their website, with Bayern and Cadiz being recent additions: Starting this fall, FC Bayern will host on the Bayern Munich Campus in Germany an elite team of talented Under 17 youth soccer players from all across America. Augenthaler, the former captain of Bayern Munich and FIFA World Cup winner, will lead the program, #FCBayern #FCB pic.twitter.com/uqoc3ui8YZ— International Soccer Academy (@IntSoccerAcad) July 22, 2023 ✅ 𝗢𝗙𝗙𝗜𝗖𝗜𝗔𝗟 | #CádizCF will train 2️⃣0️⃣ young soccer players from the United States. 💛 The club has reached an agreement with the agency @IntSoccerAcad as part of its international expansion. https://t.co/YOohGnoeIT— Cádiz CF 🇬🇧🇺🇸 (@Cadiz_CFEN) August 10, 2023 There's a few posts on on the Hertha Transfermarkt forum which mentioned the program and linked this mini-doc on the "U17 Integrated Academy" team at Hertha: One of those posts also mentioned that the players might trial with other clubs as well, which makes sense looking through their alumni page. There are familiar names that have been posted about on here.
And now that I look deeper at the Francis Castillo-Orellana thread, it's also a program he's involved with as well.
Came across the name and story of Geoff Wall, who had a trial with Bournemouth back in the day. https://www.ussoccerhistory.org/honeymoon-in-bournemouth-and-other-short-tails/
I'm not sure this totally connects the dots regarding all the Yanks at Athlone Town, but here's an item noting a partnership with a club in Massachusetts. https://www.athlonetownafc.ie/articles/99278
If Degerfors loses today to Elfsborg (#1 on the table) and Bromma gets a point against Mjallby, we'll have our first relegated player of the 23/24 season: Joe Gyau.
Degerfors managed a draw, but Brommapojkarna won away at Mjallby 1-2, so Joe Gyau becomes the first Yank Abroad officially relegated for the 23/24 season.
Read a story recently about this guy, a former RSL academy player who was in that Schalke "integrated" program, becoming a top high school placekicker. Apparently Ty Detmer was to blame. Curse you, Ty Detmer, and your gaudy collegiate passing statistics! https://internationalsocceracademy.com/schalke-integrated-academy-2022/samuel-hunsaker/
It looks like that USYS Europe team mentioned earlier is currently top of its table. https://www-rheinpfalz-de.translate..._sl=de&_x_tr_tl=en&_x_tr_hl=en&_x_tr_pto=wapp
An Italian article from earlier this year reported that Jonothon Carlos Elliott of BigSoccer lore took a youth coaching gig at a club called Caselle: https://www.terzotempo.info/pulcini...ca-ora-guidera-i-classe-2013-rossoneri-15300/ In the article, he also shared that his son's passion for the game was an inspiration for him to take the job. Based on that, it seems safe to infer his son also plays... not sure of his age or any other details, but it's fun to note! https://www.bigsoccer.com/threads/yank-kid-at-torino.121864/page-55#post-41865518
The SoccerViza organization, which has been running a club in Costa Rica, is apparently moving to Europe. I don't believe they've said where to yet. https://www.instagram.com/p/C0j2BaLOYnL/?img_index=1
