Re: Algarve Cup 2005 So Group A is Germany, Norway, Sweden and China Group B is USA, Denmark, France and Finland Is it only me or aren't all the best team except the US in group A?
Re: Algarve Cup 2005 They need to make it easy for the USWNT to reach the finals, now that the ´91 ers have quit..
Re: Algarve Cup 2005 Actually, while the loss of Mia will hurt a bit...Overall the team will be better. But that may not even be an issue, as first, the Vet's still need a new contract. Without it we will send the youngsters.
Re: Algarve Cup 2005 That depends on what you mean by best - Denmark is very strong right now. Finished ahead of Norway in UEFA qualifying and beat the USA 3-1. Yah, I know the USWNT was ill prepared for that game but Denmark looked far superior in that game and in the previous 1-1 tie. China is not near the power it once was USA is rebuilding Sweden is up and down Norway finished behind Denmark in UEFA qualifying Germany and Denmark might be the two strongest teams in the tournament.
Re: Algarve Cup 2005 It seems like the Algarve Organizing Comitee put a non European country in each group (China, USA and Mexico) and then sorted the rest of teams. Group A has three very strong European teams, along with a diminished China, Group B could be an easier one for Denmark and the new USA, although France can be a surprise, I really hope so. And finally, Group C, if England woudn't be among the 8 best for the next Europan Championship, it is really a middle quality group, perfect for the host Portugal. As for the Mexican team, it's full of youngsters that couldn't reach a spot in the last U-19 World Championship in Thailand. No more Maribel Dominguez (Barcelona Superliga), or Fatima Leyva (Indiana WPSL), Paty Perez (Indiana WPSL) or Iris Mora (UCLA NCAA). Even so, good luck girls.

Re: Algarve Cup 2005 i hope more fans will come to the stadium this time around since this is considered as a great women competition beyond WC & Olympic.
Re: Algarve Cup 2005 Is Victoria Svensson injured or something? I was surprised not to see her in Sweden's roster.
Re: Algarve Cup 2005 I believe Victoria Svensson had a minor surgery on her foot December and she is still rehabbing, so she will miss the Algarve.
Re: Algarve Cup 2005 Norway's roster was announces today. The new coach Bjarne Berntsen has ditched a large number of players from his last squad, and included four debutants: Linn Nyrønning, Ingrid Bruserud, Elisabeth Wahlin, and 16-year-old Isabell Herlovsen. Ragnhild Gulbrandsen is out due to knee injury. This is the squad: Goalkeepers: Ingrid Bruserud, Team Strømmen Ingrid Hjelmseth, Trondheims-Ørn Bente Nordby, Kolbotn Defenders: Marit F. Norwegian Roster Changes "Tusen takk" for posting Norway's Algarve Cup roster. Interesting to see that four new players have been added to Norway's roster including this 16 year old Kolbotn player Herlovsen. Anyone have some information they can share about this new players? Kind of ironic that I happen to be wearing my Boston Breakers shirt as I'm reading about another Ragnhild Gulbrandsen knee injury. Hopefully this injury isn't very serious and there still will be a chance that Ragnhild will be back in time for the European Championships. I'm kind of curious if any reasons were given by Berntsen about why any of the other players were dropped from the squad. I wonder too what it will take for Lise Klaveness to get a second chance with the National Team.
SV: Algarve Cup 2005 I just looked at some of the articles posted at SteinL's Norwegian Women's Football Blog and found the names of the players who have been dropped from the Algarve Cup roster: I'm really surprised to see that Røa's outstanding goalkeeper Silje Vesterbekkmo was dropped from the squad along with Trondheims-Ørn's goalscoring machine Heidi Pedersen and Røa star Kristine Edner. I really hope that Berntsen has a plan here because he certainly seems to be off to a very shaky start.
Re: SV: Algarve Cup 2005 Well, if you lose twice to France without scoring a single goal I would say some changes are called for. Not having seen more than rather sparse commentaries I couldn't possibly have an opinion on who should leave, but I applaude the decision to try out a couple of rookies.
Re: Norwegian Roster Changes It seems that Bjarne Berntsen, who has been into women's soccer for only two months, want to look at as many players as possible before he eventually decides who are going to be in the squad for the European Championship. The most interestering of these new players is Isabell Herlovsen, daughter of former professional footballer Kai Erik Herlovsen (Borussia Mönchengladbach, Germany). She is only 16 years old, and is regarded as one the biggest talents in Norwegian soccer for the time being. She has been in Kolbotn's A-squad since last season, but was not allowed to play in Toppserien before she turned 16 on 23.06.2004. She eventually played 10 games in Toppserien last year for Kolbotn, and scored 6 goals. If she enters the field in Algarve Cup, she will be one of the youngest players ever (maybe even THE youngest?) to play on the Norwegian WNT.
Portugal ARC Várzea: Maria Monteiro, Paula Cristina e Sónia Barbosa; ADRC Fonte Boa: Dani, Kikas e Mónica Ribeiro; Boavista FC: Sandra Silva; CFF Estudiantes: Edite Fernandes e Sílvia Brunheira; Skovlunde IF: Sofia Grave; SM Murtoense: Raquel Pessoa; SU 1º Dezembro: Carla Couto, Carla Cristina, Inês Borges, Rita Carneiro, Sónia Matias, Susana Lourido e Tânia Pinto; UR Cadima: Dulce Costa; Vitória FC: Liliana Martins.
Re: Algarve Cup 2005 what is your prediction of this year algarve ? i would say US will be coming on top.
Re: Algarve Cup 2005 Some additional information have just come up: Both Ragnhild Gulbrandsen and Kristine Edner are out due to knee injuries, and it seems like both of them will be out for a long time. Ragnhild Gulbrandsen injured her knee during training in January, and it have just become appearent that the injury was more serious than previously thought. She is in need for surgery, and will probably be out for a long time. She even says to "100% Fotball" that she just might quit soccer altogether. Kristine Edner was injured during the 2nd match vs France on Feb 22. She is also in need for surgery, but it is not yet clear how serious the injury is. Gulbrandsen vurderer å gi seg Sesongen i fare for Kristine Edner
Re: Norwegian Roster Changes "Tusen takk" SteinL for the information about Isabell Herlovsen. It will be interesting to see if she does get to play at all in the Algarve Cup. I noticed in an article posted at SteinL's blog that Røa's Elisabeth Wahlin is the first player from the Northern Norwegian town of Narvik to ever play for the WNT. http://www.fremover.no/lokal_sport/article1478709.ece I can understand giving Trondheims-Ørn forward Linn Nyrønning a chance to play with the National Team after hearing how serious Ragnhild's knee injury is, but I wonder why Berntsen is bringing in goalkeeper Ingrid Bruserud instead of Silje Vesterbekkmo?
Re: Algarve Cup 2005 What an odd question. Keep in mind that the scandinavian teams (including Finland) is just comming out of winter hibernation and Brazil is not in the tournamnet. So yes they should be. If they don't go to the final (particullary taken the uneqality of the groups into account) I would be surprised.
Re: Algarve Cup 2005 I don't think it's an odd question at all. We're coming off a winter hibernation as well and while the Euro teams will be using this to gear up for Euros, we're not gearing up for anything. We've got a fairly young roster, and those younger players will see playing time. So I'm sure there will be some mistakes made. Denmark should give us a challenge. They tied us, 1-1, and beat us, 3-1, last fall, so they know they can play well against us. And they've posted 0-0 and 1-1 ties against China in China earlier this month. I wouldn't be surprised if we wind up playing in the 3rd place match rather than the championship match.
Re: Algarve Cup 2005 Frankly, the best usage of the Algarve Cup is experimentation and team building. Placement doesn't really matter. The US never won the Algarve Cup during the team's heyday.
