Unless it's from the last few months, it's certainly not AI. But it's not real people either. Photographs have been retouched since photographs started, and it got a little better with the airbrush, but Photoshop makes it pretty easy to turn people into cartoon versions of themselves while still fooling us into thinking they actually are human. This gives some hint of what is going on behind the scenes.
