I was wrong about this; all federations except Oceania will get three slots for the U-17 Women's World Cup.

In lieu of these withdrawals in Africa, I understand now why Conmebol made a point of commenting that all 10 Federations had shown up for the South American qualifiers in Chile. These started yesterday with Ecuador and Chile tie 1-1 and Argentina won over Bolivia 5-1. More games today Peru/Paraguay and Brasil/Uruguay.

The CAF, or at least its press shop, has no inkling of this (or at least it didn't on May 1st).

They haven't added any fixtures to whittle the qualifiers from three to two. This has all the makings of a truly prodigious toes-up.

However, the finalisation of the CAF qualifying route to the World Cup, to be staged in New Zealand from October 30 to November 16, remains unsettled after Fifa reduced the qualifying berths for CAF from three to two.

Only six African countries entered the qualifiers but Liberia, who were due to play Nigeria, have since withdrawn.

“CAF proposed to Fifa to sponsor a round robin of matches, but the world governing body declined to sponsor the matches. It is now up to CAF to decide how the two teams will be determined and, as of now, I am still in the dark. But whatever decision CAF comes up with, FIFA has indicated that they want to know the names of the two qualifiers by May 31 ahead of the draw,” explains Hilton-Smith.

Ghana and DR Congo are the other two teams remaining in the contest. Save & Share

The Flamingoes will play Cameroon in Yaounde on Sunday, host Ghana on June 7, hostCameroon on June 21 and then play away to Ghana on June 29. The two top teams among the three at the end of the league series will represent Africa in New Zealand.
