Oh I read the whole thing. I just find it funny that DoctorK, one of the more "purist" Metro fans, would be so absolute in his denial of the celebration of the past 10 years of Metro history by a group of true Metro fans. Come on Metro!
The AFC is one of the two NFL conferences, along with the NFC. That could confuse some people, including the NFL. Several years ago there was a Staton Island USL team, The Vipers. A number of ESC members peeled away to support that team, as a protest to the way Metro was run, and as an example of a 'true' soccer club that cared about its fans. Best wishes.
"AFC" is short for "Association Football Club." When you consider who this club would appeal to -- in terms of fanbase -- I doubt there'd be as much confusion as you might suspect.
That's fine and dandy, I'm just surprised that so many hardcore Metro fans have taken this so easily, and made the switch in stride. DoctorK was the ringleader of the "true" fans, calling me a DC supporter, etc. I'm just pointing out his duplicity if you will. So if Red Bull changes it's name in several years...does the teamname follow then? And then what happens to you guys?
As long as they don't turn into a Pink Steer, I'm okay with changes down the road. I plan to be somewhere down the road, myself.
I knew that, but people outside our tight, soccer community would think American Football Conference -- including NFL lawyers. It's just possible that the 'rights' to AFC are tied up, like the right to "Lone Star," which could have posed problems for Lone Star Houston, had they gone that way, instead of Houston Dynamo. Will the team be able to play in a transportation-friendly location? I suppose it's nearly impossible to find a small field that meets the team's needs off a train or bus line.
Where are they now? (team & fans) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Staten_Island_Vipers Has it really been 7 years since this USOC game? 07.13.99 Open Cup MetroStars Staten Island 2:3 Walsh 2 http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/inside_game/michael_lewis/news/1999/08/13/open_cup/ "The MetroStars lost to the A-League's Staten Island Vipers in the third round of the tournament. ... in a local New York derby, the Staten Island Vipers ... stunned the struggling MetroStars in extra time 3-2."
I do appreciate the compliments you've paid me in this thread, Aris, and I still think you are DC in disguise (were you defending Nowak on his Africa slur? Just wondering... ). Four years at Boston College have done little for your critical thinking skills. How am I duplicitous for not supporting some brand new entity that is hijacking my team's colors and name (if not history)? And one that would play against another team I support? No, I don't think so. I've no problem with a new PDL team based in northern NJ, especially one started up by disgruntled ex-Metrofans. It would bring me great disappointment to have to cheer against such a team, but I would when they played the Westchester Flames. But the big reason is this: the MetroStars have become the New York Red Bulls and my allegiance stays with them. I'm not a defector.
all i can say, is do it. we have just come back from leipzig in germany, played our 1st european game in our small history. and what a weekend it was, att 8,000 game 4-4 no trouble buts lots of drinking and singing together, now thats not heard of....is it germany v england.. well its true. see pics http://punkfootball.blogspot.com/
I think some of the fans finally realized soccer is a business and not a religion. It never was for the people in suits.
The legacy continue? Maybe, but this thread certainly never ends... Geez, sorry, Jamison, I didn't notice the locked door.
