You're crazy, Freddy is the best American ever!!!! If Benfica only played him they would never lose. They are undefeated when he plays, how can he not be the best. There, that ought to get the ball rolling in this thread
Wow, maybe we should set up a separate thread for posters with a little perspective. to wit... Yes, Freddy is the best 18 year old American player ever (LD as possible exception? And Altidore isn't 18 yet is he?). But he's still a ways off from being a regular contributor at Benfica. He only made his appearance last time because of injuries in the squad...no matter how highly the old coach thought of him he'd only had a handful of practices with his new teammates (how could anyone be surprised that the coach had to call him over to discuss positioning, he barely knew where Benfica keeps their towels at that point). But name me the last US player on the game day squad, let alone playing, in a UCL qualifier at that age. Will he see the field? Depends of course on the needs of the game. I'd put the chances of an appearance at 10-20%. Most likely Benfica need a goal to advance. And nobody here knows what his new manager thinks of him.
Right, and how old was Karbassiyoon when he scored for Arsenal? Or was that a domestic cup? There you go, 2, maybe 3.
Yes and yes. The year before, Jovan scored 20 goals in 21 matches for Man U reserves, which was almost exactly the rate that Giuseppe Rossi managed for them a decade later, and was named one of the 10 top world prospects by World Soccer. As a youth, his SoCal club team won Dallas Cup, and then when he showed up to Man U his Man U squad won the Youth Cup. The young man had it all, as glittering a youth resume as any Yank this side of Freddy Adu.
You're just pulloing stuff out of your arse here. For all you know, the new manager will start Freddy, just to shake things up. The truth here is that nobody on these boards has any idea what kind of playing time Adu will get now. We'll all just have to wait and see.
But waiting and seeing would go against the very ethos of BigSoccer. I expect to see Adu if/when FCC go ahead - particularly the dreaded 1-0 - but you're right that Adu might start or might not play at all. We just don't know.
And while we're waiting, here's an SFS special ... http://www.boston.com/sports/articles/2007/08/29/a_ruler_for_the_galaxy/ .... Benfica swings deal Benfica, which has added 12 players since selling Simao Sabrosa to Atletico Madrid for $27 million recently, sold midfielder Manuel Fernandes to Valencia for $24.5 million. Fernandes was set to go to Everton for about half that price, Valencia increasing the offer at the last minute. Half of the Fernandes transfer fee will go to Benfica and the rest to Global Soccer Agency, an investment group that shares Fernandes's rights. Spanish laws, which allow sports clubs to contract players at a low tax rate, were a factor in the move. Fernandes signed a six-year contract worth $2.73 million annually, with 25 percent of his salary taxed, according to the Portuguese sports daily O Jogo. ....
looked like Benfica made quite a nice chunk of change. no wonder why their team looks like sh*t this season.
