Good on him, he's earned his rest. Playing top level football in England for 20 years takes it out of you.
I think he realizes that he's not up to playing a full season in any league any more. It would be sad to see him playing the odd game here and there for anyone due to his injuries. And there's no better way than to go out than by winning the double, so he's finished at the top.
