It's hard to believe in the year 2024 that winning helps sell tickets, especially for teams that have been around for a while.
It also helps if Messi is coming to your stadium this year (VAN hosts MIA May 25th). Especially if, like the Revs, the only way to get tickets to the Miami game is to buy season-tickets or multi-game packs (I don't know if VAN is doing that or not, but I would assume so).
I don’t know in Vancouver but here in LA with Galaxy is thanks to Messi many people bought season tickets and partials plans just to be on Messi’s game, so the improvement is artificial, we will see next year.
The Galaxy are doing much better this season so shouldn't have too many issues. I do remember last year a lot of people were very frustrated because of the poor performance and kept calling for leadership changes. I don't expect a cup win but maybe a good playoff run is probably what will happen.
???? Not hard to believe at all. It’s a slow process but MLs clubs that have gone from crappy to good have seen attendance increases before.
Montreal (vs. Cincinnati) 19,619 Charlotte (vs. Toronto) 31,414 Dallas (vs. Seattle) 19,096 Vancouver (vs. Los Angeles Galaxy) 25,026 Missing: NYCFC, NYRB, MNUFC, RSL, and SJE
I get the average shooting up, and congrats on SKC vs Miami filling Arrowhead. But what I find kinda amusing, as a Galaxy fan, is seeing Atlanta Fans bragging about holding 7 of the top 10 all-time reg season attendance records. This list hasn't been updated yet to reflect the SKC vs Miami match, but since El Trafico is going to be hosted every season July 4th in the Rose Bowl I have a feeling whats going to happen lol. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Major_League_Soccer_attendance
Perhaps, but single game attendances can skyrocket without Messi. Look at last season's el Trafico at the Rose Bowl. Also there seemed to be a remarkable improvement on this front once Klein left. Not only results on the pitch, but in fan engagement.
Although quite impressive, that's not exactly a Galaxy accomplishment but an LA game with both teams. It they play a variety of teams and get big numbers it would reflect what Atlanta has done with multiple teams.
Fair enough. Galaxy's home stadium isn't as big as Atlanta's and kudos for Atlanta for constantly filling the stadium they play in. That being said, the Galaxy were also at the #2 spot as well (as visitors) But then for that statistic, average attendance is what matters
With MLS trying to own a holiday this could be an interesting year for July 4th with three July 3rd games in big stadiums.
Its going to be an interesting time as an MLS fan. I'm thrilled to see fan engagement like this. Also, "Derbys" driving the attendance records up is a GOOD thing for me. That tells me the reason is League and Club related, NOT tabloid related (aka "star power" like Messi). Sure its both LA Teams together, but its both LA Teams without that huge international "star" to draw in the non-MLS fans for the glitz and glamour. it means all of the fans in attendance care about the actual teams on the field.
Yeah that's what I like about El Trafico, it truly feels organic as two teams going at it and really beefing with each other. I could also imagine MLS will try a Canadian Classique on Canada Day (July 1) to rival July 4 El Trafico and maybe a Hudson River Derby on July 4 (maybe when NYCFC gets their place since baseball wants to play the same Day or just host in Harrison). I don't think MLS is at a risk of falling like the NASL did after Pele left. The fanbases were quite strong even before Messi and even Inter Miami was also well attended before Messi. Add that soccer has grown massively in the US and Canada and momentum of this decade then you get long term success.
while there are sure to be twists and turns (and even the NFL, NHL, MLB and NBA have had and still have them), we no longer need to worry that MLS will be NASL 2.0 MLS is here to stay- the even better news is that it still has a lot of room to grow and develop in so many ways)
Yeah we practically are developing talent like Tyler Adams, Alphonso Davies, Matt Turner, Ricardo Pepi, etc. and the fact that Thiago Almada won while on Atlanta has massively boosted credibility. I'm sure that by 2050 the World Cup champions will consist of both active and former MLS players who went overseas.
From MLS PR: Matchday 9 action saw 366,979 fans in attendance across the league this weekend, which was the third-highest attended weekend of @MLS games in league history. pic.twitter.com/ZJIMk4Dd45— MLS Communications (@MLS_PR) April 14, 2024
It’s the across the league not one team. MLS had 10-12 teams in the first few seasons before LAG moved to their new stadium. So you’d have only 5-6 games each weekend. So if every game drew 50k the total would only be 250-300k, thus below this mark. Also, July 4, isn’t always the weekend.
