My initial reaction is the groups look pretty even. Maybe ours is the most difficult, but if so it's probably not by much, and there's no reason we shouldn't be beating all three of those teams.

Assuming I am getting this right, if we win our group (which, of course, that's why we play the games) we get the third-place team from one of the other groups (presumably chosen through some ranking scheme I haven't bothered to figure out) and if we beat them, we're in.

Runner-up would be interesting -- we'd get a must-win game against the Group C winner, which would presumably (again, play the games and all that) be Mexico. Third place gets the Group B winner, which would not be Mexico. I'd call that a wrinkle!

EDIT: I guess there are some other scenarios where we'd get Mexico in the all-or-nothing round, but they're somewhat less likely. Like we win our group and Mexico is third in theirs...

Was just catching up on the tournament rules and noted a few things; if they were already mentioned, my bad:

They mention a low age cutoff of Dec. 31, 2009. That is... young, since January 2005 is the high end! I for some reason thought they were tightening up these things, but maybe it wasn't for this competition or something.

Provisional lists due 30 days before the tournament starts. Up to 60 players, 5 must be GKs (so you figure most countries will not stop at the low end, which is 21 players).

Final lists due 10 days before the tournament starts. 21 players, 3 GKs, must come from the provisional list.

I guess we can reasonably conclude from this that the provisional lists will be due mid-June and the final ones early July.

Injury replacements can be made from provisional list up to 24 hours before a team's first game.

Three keepers is new, no? Qualifying has been two in the past I believe.

Here's a training roster for Haiti. It's more players than are allowed, so there will be cuts.

This seems to be a training roster for the DR. It includes an American-born player based in Ireland.

By the way, someone else observed on Twitter that there isn't a single Haiti-based player on that Haiti roster. That seems notable. (Several are American.)

Seems like a smart strategy by them to achieve results, although I understand why locals might not like it.

The locals in Haiti are probably too busy right now to care much about U-20 rosters

That’s certainly true, but in general I could see why locals would not be happy with their whole roster for a national team being players developed outside of the country. Players that realistically might not have especially close ties to the country.

I'm a little surprised that we haven't seen more official roster announcements yet. Based on the tournament rules, all the lists should be in. One might guess that they were waiting for a break in the Copa America, but who knows. Still, I guess stuff (including, I figure, the customary all-inclusive CONCACAF list where we learn some random dude's real name is "Reinhold") will start landing soon enough.

Yes, it's two bad jokes in one post, but I feel obligated to say something about how one of these guys looks like a Titanic selection.

CONCACAF apparently put out a "what you need to know" release yesterday. I didn't see much news in it, or a mention of the timing of a roster release.

    https://www.concacaf.com/under-20s-...men-s-u-20-championship-all-you-need-to-know/

I noticed that apparently the entire tournament is at two venues. Assuming that means two fields... that seems potentially like some field-condition fun could arise, since apparently the competition is 25 games.

I would've taken CJ Olney over Vazquez- he's been the much better player this year. I had them about even before the year started but CJ has been on a different level. I hoping Philly wouldn't release him because he deserves 1st team minutes at this point.
