I wonder why Portman is jumping ship.
Would Tim Ryan be a viable candidate?

He said it's cuz the job sucks now.

Let's hope the Patriot Party finds a good candidate to split the economic anxiety vote.

Ryan would definitely be a viable candidate for Dems. The obvious non batshit GOP candidate would be Kasich.

Aside for making room for Kasich in 2022, Portman leaving could also help Brown out in 2024 in other ways. I could see a right winger emerge from the 2024 GOP primary and Portman actually tossing his support to his fellow Senator from OH.

Burr down in NC announced a while back too. Those are three pretty nice states to avoid a GOP incumbent. Grassley and Johnson bolting would complete my wish list.

Given Kasich’s desire to be President, would he run for Senate only to pretty much announce his 2024 run on the day he would be sworn into the Senate?

Related. I updated the table in the first post to show Portman’s retirement.

I guess his slogan will be " we will not suppress your sleep but can't say that about your vote". Good luck getting your ass kicked in Minnesota, mofo.

MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell (R) may run for Minnesota governor, Axios reports.

It depends upon what the next 6-12 months brings I suppose. If there are investigations into Trump and various GOP pols that implicate them in the Capitol insurrection—I mean in an airtight way—and we see progress on the pandemic and popular legislation is passed, I think 2024 looks very hard for and GOP POTUS candidate. But OH is to the right of the key 2024 swing states and Kasich is a bigger brand there.

He’s be favored in the Senate race no matter who he faces in the primary. In 2024, the primary is going to be a complete mess: Hawley, Cruz, Rubio, Haley, Romney, other moderate GOP governors. A Trump?

I’ve told Portman’s office on multiple occasions over the last few years how much I was looking forward to canvassing for his opponent, voting for his opponent, and seeing the end of his political career. I’ll go ahead and take credit for him not seeking re-election.

Now that it looks like I’ll be leaving Ohio for NJ....I get to miss the aftermath and the inevitable Senatorial run of Gym Jordan. Pretty happy about that. It will also be nice to live on the blue side of the front in the event of our civil war.

I think they’d go 2-3 at best, 0-5 at worst. As awful as he is, Jordan would have the best odds. He’s probably 50-50. Probably a slight underdog vs Ryan.

I think Laura Trump is the best bet. Ward in Az is batshit crazy and she can't win vs Kelly. In Pa, Fetterman will be formidable and I think Gym Jordan may be too toxic even for Oh. MTG in Ga is a loose cannon and repulsive for the majority there.

I doubt it. She has zero ties here.
And that's why he ran for president...to build a donor list.

Same with Swalwell, who will be going after Feinstein's seat (she can't possibly run again, can she?)

If Strom can do it, no reason she can’t. Not that I’m happy about her trying.

Of course she CAN. But she represents one of the most liberal states in the US, one of the safest seats for a Dem, and she doesn't come close to voting that way.

More and better Democrats is my motto.

And segueing into "more," a young state legislator who is a white male and also a veteran has announced he's going to run for the US Senate. And it's not Cal Cunningham, although, who can really tell, I mean, have you ever seen them both at the same time?

    Strom is running again?

He may be one terrible, racist, segregationist creature who brings the entire definition of "human being" done a bit, but if he can run for the Senate at the age of 118, having been dead for over 17 years, that is a pretty impressive feat! ;)

Of course, I probably would not put it past the "good people" of South Carolina.

Prepare for the gerrymander! Wasserman came up with a NY district map after they lose a seat where D's pickup 4 seats and Republicans lose 5.

I'm assuming we can expect Republican states to do this...

Awful. I am against gerrymandering, regardless of party.

I am too. But unfortunately we’re at the point where unilateral disarmament produces less democratic institutions than doing the same. And unlike the GOP gerrymanders, this one actually makes sense from a social/geographic cohesion standpoint while being legal.

In an ideal world both parties and every state with more than one house seat would put a stop to this. But if Dem states went it alone (as they have in CA and elsewhere), we’d be looking at a 15-20 seat handicap against a GOP turning the screws. Nope.

Do the same everywhere to compel them to come to the table with a national agreement/legislation.

Sounds like Dems need to work a lot harder to win state & local elections...
