Yeah, most players (at least historically*) haven't had children until after retiring because the physical challenges of pregnancy make it hard to remain playing at a high level, and vice versa. If you think of the 99ers/WUSA players generally not having children until after WUSA collapsed after 2003, that means their kids would only just now be entering their 20s; many only had their first kids between 2006-08. This is also why it's a relatively Big Deal (tm) that players like Morgan, Leroux. McDonald, and Rodriguez have been able to remain high-level starters while also being moms. Fawcett and Rampone came before them, but they were the exceptions at the time. *Sports health science has really grown in the women's game recently; I also recall after the last World Cup that part of the USWNT's success was attributed to their health team crafting training and diet regimes tuned individually to to account for any dips in form from the monthly hormone cycle. But yeah, I think the normal pattern is to see former players as coaches before you start seeing former players' kids as new players; MLS has had former players as coaches for many years now and is only just starting to see the kids coming up, while NWSL is only just now starting to see a couple of former players hitting the coaching ranks, so I think seeing lots of second-generation ProWoSo players is still a few years off.
I'm keeping my eye on Cassius Cruz Dwyer (son of Dom Dwyer and Sydney Leroux), but he's only age 5 right now...

You didn't like my answer? How are you defining "amateur"? I would say that the Open Cup never went amateur. It had amateur teams from the beginning in 1914 when it was the National Challenge Cup.
I was actually thinking more generally. Like, do MLS players only have boy kids, and WUSA players only have girl kids? Or are there also MLS kids in WUSA and vice-versa?
OK. But they weren't the only teams in the tournament. The earliest version of the ASL boycotted the tournament at various points but the Federation didn't force them out. They tried to get all teams participate at that point. In the 70s the NASL chose not to participate. I'm struggling to understand what you are trying to determine when you ask "When did the Open Cup go amateur?"
Funny how that works. In a country 4,700 miles wide two teams less than 30 miles apart are considered on opposite sides
Hamilton is only a little farther west of both of them but they are on the "East" side of the bracket.
Nobody saw the upset of the Redcoats by a farm league team that year coming. Their late transfers in from the French league really made the difference.
Mackenzie Frimpong-Ellertson may be the first daughter of a USWNT player to play in NWSL when she gets drafted next season
Another round of the Open Cup, another soggy night for Minnesota United to play in. I detect a trend.
I have Covid (again!) just in time for another round of Open Cup. And it gets me out of a wedding I didn't want to go to. Silver linings!
