I think it's 50% sticking it to Manfred with the "dians" staying, 50% the 1899 season that led to the Spiders folding (for those who don't know, worst team in baseball history - largely because they were the Cardinals farm team).
I could believe that. If there was even a remote possibility of being Cleveland Baseball Team, he really would have been unhappy.
I think CBT came close to being a reality in 2021. Home jerseys with Cleveland on the front instead of Indians got to the point of being produced as replicas sold in the Team Shop and being included as alternates in the MLB: The Show video game.
I'm pulling a lot of this from a back corner of my memory, so I'm probably not 100% accurate, but about 20 years ago, Crew FO paychecks came from a business known as Crew Soccer LLC. (Back then, players were typically signed by the league and assigned to play for whatever team. Their paychecks may have come straight from league HQ.) "Columbus Crew" or "The Crew" or whatever other variation was just the public-facing name of the entity. I'm sure this continues today in some form. I wouldn't be at all surprised if most pro teams in the USA had something similar set up. Would random Cincinnati Reds ticket guy get paychecks from "Cincinnati Reds" or "Cincinnati Baseball Club" or something else? Go to Europe and you almost never hear nicknames in any sort of formal discussion. We all know River Plate vs Boca Juniors is a huge rivarly, but does anyone know their nicknames off the top of their head? It's definitely an American thing and Joe SportsFan would have an absolute coronary if he had to cheer for "City Name" over "Nickname." With that said, I'm utterly pleased we didn't have that "Columbus SC" crap forced upon us.
I remember many happy days going with my paw to see the 'Dians take on the 'Gers or the 'Nkees down at 'Gressive Field.
My U-Verse guide says there's a Cavs preseason game on BSO. I checked the overflow channels (something which still confounds Time Warner viewers) and they say the Cavs game is also on the overflow channels. So...this game could be one where a search may be needed.
Winner take all this weekend in Orlando. I’m sure the team and Porter will deal well with the pressure.
Wednesday, 10/5: CHA 2:2 CLB MIA 4:1 ORL Points Wins GD PHI 64 18 +42 MTL 62 19 +11 NYC 52 15 +15 NYRB 50 14 +8 MIA 48 14 -7 CIN 46 11 -+5 CLB 46 10 +6 ------------------------------- ORL 45 13 -10 CHA EFF THOSE GUYS Well. As disappointing as that final result was, that point matters. A lot. We move ahead into playoff position. So as it turns out, things are much more simplified. It's easy. If the Crew get any kind of result in Orlando on Decision Day, they qualify. A win could actually catapult us up to 5th, if Miami loses in Montreal and Cincinnati loses in DC (ha). A draw could move us up to 6th, again, if Cincinnati loses (ha). A loss, and we're eliminated. Orlando got blown off the park tonight, and they'll be without center back Antonio Carlos due to yellow cards. So they need a win to get in for sure. A win could get them as high as 5th, depending on other results and margins of victory/defeat. A draw COULD sneak them if the aforementioned FC Cincinnati trips over themselves in DC. Charlotte is out. Miami qualifies. Miami could still move into a home playoff spot if they beat Montreal and Red Bulls lose. And in the middle of all this is Cincy. Any kind of point in DC gets them in. If they were to somehow lose, they would qualify if the Orlando/Columbus match has a winner. A loss and an Orlando/Columbus draw would have both the Crew and the Lions in, and Cincy eliminated.
Fun fact: Columbus has not taken points against the Lions in Orlando since 2017, going 0-0-4 since then. EDIT: I have been informed that this fact is not fun at all, but tragic and cruel.
Help me out for a second. If Crew somehow managed to catapult into fifth, Crew would have an away playoff game the first round? 5th-7th have away games? No home playoff games in the first round (if any) for Crew? So I bought my first ever LDC tickets for Saturday, and then I abruptly had to have them refunded (1:30 does not work for this Saturday). Now I am trying to think ahead on when I could get my kids down to Columbus. If we have to wait until next season, oh well. Thanks.
Yes, no home match in round 1 (if we make it) is guaranteed. Though it is possible for subsequent rounds.
"Because, MLS...." is the saddest and laziest kind of analysis. That said, the fact that we enter the final week of the season in playoff position, despite failing to win consecutive matches all season is very, "Because, MLS....."
