Should have won but I like the fight back, good to see them handle some adversity. That said, still lots of work to do
Bad Memphis showed up in the first half and this can never happen against good teams as he's the only scoring threat on this team right now.. Ake again showed he is good for one huge mental mistake every game. Timber is much better than Teze who should not be on the team at all. Bergwijn was mediocre. Gakpo looked lost on the right side but that might just be from lack of play. If de Jong gets hurt this team is dead in the water and won't make it out of the group. Blind is past his prime as we all know. Berghuis plays because there is too much mediocrity among the MFs.
The only players with a sufficient rating by me are Ake, de Vrij and Dumfries. I give 4 out of 10 to Memphis, Blind and van Gaal. LvG gets that bad rating first for putting this team on the pitch and second for the tactical plan, not being in line with the players on the pitch. If you want to play this tactic, put players on the pitch who can execute it. This bunch in my eyes are capable of executing not one of any tactical plan.
Memphis said missing a penalty "can happen" and playing a bad half "can happen". Flekken needs a mention as well. Didn't have much to do vs Wales and now Poland but nevertheless leaks goals. Something like 3 chances, 3 goals conceded. Cillessen had some useful interventions against Belgium lately; Bijlow in previous games.
Late in the second half Flekken had to come out quickly when Ake made another error and let his man almost get in. Maybe Ake does catch up, but Flekken was alert enough to kick the ball to safety. Flekken was let down by his defenders on all three goals. You could have Buffon in his prime and those would be goals as well.
Could be that he was. I did not watch on the Dutch feed and did not see any interviews after the match. The US commenters felt that he was not at fault but certainly he was not at fault on the 2nd goal when it was 2 attackers in on the GK. Edit: I think Bijlow still has to be first choice keeper.
Flekken's activities were taking two balls out of the goal, the intervention you mentioned and some back passes by other players. I wouldnot blame him for any of those goals. The first goal was 95% on Blind and maybe 5% on Flekken, but still. So he just balances on the sufficient side of my ratings, but that's more because of lack of noticeable activities.
Memphis needs to be sharper. Bad Pk. Flekken was not good great vs Denmark and Germany. He’s 3rd string. I’m for Cillessen who seems a little more solid, but it will be interesting to see where he moves to. Bijlow bothered me terribly on that outrageous mistake vs Turkey.
Error definitely by Ake who has improved with more playing time, and overcoming injury problems. That said you just cannot make mistakes like that. He also receives little coverage help from Blind so again it does not help your playing with a guy who is pathetic defensively
From my pov Ake was playing both CD and left back. Blind was so slow Ake every time had to run to the left back position to stop the player popping up there and Blind in the process was trying to plug the hole left by Ake in the center. Every time LvG puts Blind on the pitch it's a failure for giving another player time to hone in the necesary minutes of experience with the rest of the selection.
