Well, an interesting possible DOGSO/SPA around 10 mins in, but the RBNY attacker gets back up and stabs in a shot that’s cleared away by a chasing defender at the last possible moment after the ref allowed advantage. It seems the CR went back and (justifiably) cautioned for a reckless tackle (or SPA? Except SPA cautions can’t be given anymore after playing advantage AIUI). Pretty frantic stuff.
And now at 20’ MIA6 gets a YC on what may have been a tackle after the whistle on an OS. Mass confrontation and Gonzales Jr looking a little rattled IMO.
And now at 22’ MIA8 steps on RBNY9’s ankle, probable SFP. CR was partially screened by offender’s body and missed the foul.
He didn’t look rattled at all. He looked calm, and I thought he did a nice job in managing the emotions. The caution was a downgrade for what would have been dogso, not spa. He was right to caution after playing advantage. Not sure what the long delay by VAR was for. The cleat to the ankle was a clear miss and definitely orange at minimum.

After San Jose scored a penalty against Austin, the Quakes made the standard foray intot he net to wrestle a defender for the ball. As they came back out, the Austin GK blindsided the Quake player who had the ball. I thought it was surely going to be red but after VAR, they went with yellow. You can just see it at 3:10 here.
I watched it several times live. I think the keeper did everything right not to get the red. He stepped into the SJ player with a check but didn't raise his arms, elbow, etc. What I found a bit odd was that the CR held off handing out cautions until after he was done speaking with VAR. It appeared as though he used VAR to help determine who should be cautioned which is against what it is supposed to be used for. At the same time, the CR may have been sorting it out with his ARs, made his decision, and then the timing looked bad having not shown the cards by the time VAR cleared any look for red.

I think that's an easy red card. This isn't hockey. And even if it was, it's so far after action has concluded that there's no way it's not violent conduct for me. He completely blindsided a guy who had no reason he was going to get blasted American-football style. That said, I don't really feel sorry for the guy he hit, because this whole idea of running into the other team's net to retrieve a ball after you just scored is possibly the dumbest thing that currently exists in the game.
Alas, I don't know that it is dumb. We see so much evidence that refs don't add the time that is actually taken that, unfortunately, it creates a motive for teams to every thing they can to get the new KO ready to be taken as quickly as possible. (Now, in HS where the clock actually stops until the KO, it is really, really dumb.)
statement from PRO on two calls in the Philadelphia/Orlando match. Posting this here since a few people seem to be making comments on this game. (I haven't seen the plays in question. I'm just passing it along to any who are interested) Statements from PRO on two major incidents in the Union-Orlando game - the potential foul before the Union’s first goal, and whether Pedro Gallese denied an obvious goal scoring opportunity when he tripped Sergio Santos: pic.twitter.com/wipbv9zUSe— Jonathan Tannenwald (@thegoalkeeper) September 20, 2021
Penso had 3 justifiable cautions on Timbers players in the first half, but he seems to be going out of his way to avoid giving a caution to an LAFC player. If I were him (I'm clearly not) I would be trying to find a way to even the card count.
I think if the GK was ejected then the attacker (Espinoza) who threw the defender into the back of the net should have been ejected as well. I think I'm discounting the GK action a little b/c of that which I probably shouldn't be. In the end, 2 yellows or 2 reds.
His touch was heavy because he was fouled. Had he not been fouled, he easily gets that ball and has a very good scoring opportunity. Also, I haven't been able to find a shot of the referee indicating advantage.
A good scoring opportunity. Is it an obvious one though? This is one of those DOGSO decisions where one team will feel aggrived. A FK + yellow doesn't feel like enough. A FK + red feels harsh.
Unless something extraordinary has happened, Tannewald should know better or should be more careful. That is Kelly, on behalf of his crew, explaining the calls in response to specific pool reporter questions. Framing them as "statements from PRO" is more than misleading. PRO itself, as an organization, could criticize or defend the calls, but that likely wouldn't come until later in the week. PRO could also say nothing, as it most often does when there is no VAR intervention. The point is, the referees following protocol and answering questions from the media in writing from the locker room is a lot different than a "statement from PRO."
I disagree. It's like handling. IFAB tried to fix it so that it was clear that you can not score a goal with your hand even if unintentional because that what everyone expects. Here you have an attacker with only the keeper to beat and the keeper fouls him. Everyone expects a red. It would be rare not to have one.
There is a quick arm movement visible on the broadcast as Orlando establishes possession, but he drops it as soon as the ball turns over.
I did not expect red. Neither did the AR 5 yards away from it, the extremely experienced referee, or the VAR/AVAR. Maybe the fans expected a red but that’s why we don’t let them officiate the game. I don’t buy at all that the heavy touch is caused by the foul…he touches the ball and then is fouled…whether the GK makes contact or not he’s pushed the ball very deep into the corner. You’ve only got 2/4 considerations. This isn’t even really that controversial to me. Every GK foul isn’t a red
at what point do you say "the advantage didn't materialize" and go back to the foul? I guess this highlights the danger of playing advantage in the defensive penalty area
