Revs traded their 4th round pick to MIA for Nguyen. Since the 4th round is now gone, MIA will get a compensation pick at the end of the third round, one of 5 comp picks added.

Strange MLS business, but works out well for the Revs. MIA gets the compensation agreed on, while NE doesn't give up anything. o_O

I would be surprised if the revs use all their picks anyway.

They havent taken a player beyond the 2nd round in a couple years

A 4th round pick had been the equivalent of a bag of soccer balls, so no huge benefit. I think this was the way to get around the "take the salary off our hands and we'll trade him for nothing" being frowned upon.

Dmid is a position we haven't drafted for in like forever (Caldwell coming through the academy, Polster/Caicedo/Zahibo were acquisitions). The staff might like to groom another option for that position.

I counted eight players on the list that play for an MLS affiliate. I wonder if any teams would draft one of them as a way of leveraging some type of deal.

Now they just need to eliminate rounds 3,2, and 1.

Mock drafts seem to be pretty close as to the top 3 picks
Draftopia: 1. Clemson Midfielder Philip Mayaka 2. Washington CB Ethan Bartlow 3. Wake Forest F Calvin Harris
Bleacher: 1. Mayaka 2. Harris 3. Virginia Tech CM Dan Pereira (SBI pick 4, Draftopia pick 6) Bartlow they have at 5.
    SBI: 1. Mayaka 2. Harris 3. Bartlow
Top Draw: 1. Mayaka 2. Harris 3. Pereira (they don't list Bartlow in Rd 1)

I'll see your smart and raise you a Tajon Buchanon and a Henry Kessler. I get if you don't want to invest in scouting college players, that it's better to punt on the draft, but the draft is where most teams get the inexpensive players who you need to meet the salary cap. Academies have cut into this, but only part way.

The 1st round still seems to have the goods, especially in the top 10. Beyond that a lot of guys struggle to even stick with the reserves, let alone make the senior roster.

From 2020 you had 3 impact players: Kessler, Dike, Allstair Johnson. Only 15 others are even still on MLS rosters (all from the 1st round).

There is value, but I don't fault Phili looking to put their resources into their own academy instead of relying on the handful of college programs that produce MLS talent

ExtraTime podcast this week, talking about the SuperDraft, David Gass poses this trivia question:

In the 2004 SuperDraft, the Revs took Clint Dempsey in round 1, and Andy Dorman in round 6. In round 3, they took a player who didn't play for them until 2012, choosing to play in Europe instead. Who was it?

Agreed on the Philly part. And let's be honest, their Academy is doing fantastic things. They've completely blown by quite a few other teams (ours included).

Yeah, high hopes came to little. We had another guy we drafted a few years before that who went to Europe (Greece?) first. And when he eventually came to the Revs it was much ado about nothing as well.

From MLSsoccer.com mock draft: Kristo Strickler, Virginia Tech (Forward)
Can New England continue its recent success at the draft in this spot? Strickler went from walk-on to one of the best goal-scorers in the ACC. Bruce Arena certainly could find a way for it to continue working in MLS
