Half-time: Senegal 0 - 0 Egypt Good game, not great, but it will be in the second half, surely? Just go out and all-out attack, both teams, nothing to lose, it's been a weird tournament and whoever wins the cup will feel strong about beating the other in the March for the World Cup. How weird is that - that Senegal will play Egypt to see who goes to Qatar?! It's like how Scotland will play Ukraine again in June in the Nations League after March's WCQ.
No, that's a loser's strategy from the 1990s. Go on a rampage these days and you'll win or narrowly lose the cup in a final.
its been working so far though for Egypt. This game is very similar to their games against CIV and even Cameroon and Morocco.
RIP, Swedish goalkeeping legend, Ronnie "The Flying Viking" Hellström (21 February 1949 – 6 February 2022). 77 caps for Sweden, three World Cups, 1970-74-78. Great performance at 1974 against West Germany in the pouring rain. One of the best goalies of the 1970s. Played for Hammarby and Kaiserslautern. Cancer got him. Very sad, he was a universally loved player, a real character! Rock on, Ronnie.
Full-time: Senegal 0 - 0 Egypt Can't believe there has been no goals, but many AFCON finals are tight, low scoring and no-scoring affairs. Extra time, then...
Indeed. They should have been 2-0 in the first half, early second half, but I could see Egypt winning it, too now as the game fragments.
better team won not just Senegal won today , but FOOTBALL won today I'm so glad Egypt did not penalty kick their way to being champions.
I did not watch this tournament, but congrats to Senegal. Probably the biggest team to have not won it up to this point.
expect Egypt to come back hard to get that birth to Qatar. It will be war. Can Senegal do the double over Egypt ?
Egypt tried to play like and win the tournament like Italy won Euro 2020 but even Italy were not as defensive as Egypt were in this tournament.
before this game I was feeling vibes of Senegal winning the tournament but Egypt getting revenge and going to Qatar. half of my vibey feelings were right. I hope I am wrong. we could even see penalty kicks to determine the qualifier.
Quick review of my pre-tournament predictions. I got only three out of eight quarterfinalists, two semi-finalists and the winner correct. I was also spot on on hosts Cameroon finishing with the bronze. Morocco exited in the quarterfinals. Algeria were the biggest underperformer. Overall I'm happy with my predictions.
I think it was very important for them that Ismaila Sarr recovered in time for the quarterfinals onward. He was very dangerous today in the first half. Should have had an assist. In the 2nd half he wasn't effective and was subbed out as a result.
Congratulations to Senegal. While I don't believe this was a lopsided game where Senegal should have necessarily won by several goals, I do feel Senegal and Mane should have certainly given Senegal an early lead (either from Mane's penalty shot a few minutes into the game or from chance from the close range chance Mane couldn't connect to a few minutes or more later). With an early lead, we would also seen a different game: maybe Senegal would have shown more proficiency given their class upfront to add to their lead against an Egypt searching for an equalizer (<50%), or maybe pushing up for a goal, a side with Mo Salah (and quite a bit more actually) could have equalized as they did against Morocco (>50%). Leaving these early chances aside, to me the game could have gone either way as it remained scoreless. The Egyptian goalie made a couple (maybe 3) of good (but not spectacular really) saves, but Mandi wasn't left without anything to do either: he had a couple of good (but not spectacular really) saves as well. The game being decided by penalties wasn't particularly unfair and I am glad Mane came through at the end. A major part of a coach's job tactically is to, first hide your team's weaknesses, and second accentuate your team's strength's. While Carlos Queiroz is an experienced, knowledgeable, coach whose unforgivable faults lie outside of the tactical realm, my own view is that even tactically, he only does the first half (cover weaknesses) part well. More on that maybe later.
Vintage Carlos Queiroz comments. The Egyptian players, to be sure, played with heart and passion. Other than 2-3 mistakes, they did and played according to the script their coach had given them. But even if their performance was laudable, the term heroic loses its meaning when Queiroz applies it to a script others would find cowardly. https://www.kingfut.com/2022/02/07/queiroz-proud-after-senegal-defeat/ Queiroz proud of his players’ “heroic performance” after Senegal defeat
