Anthony Fontana is set to join Serie B side Ascoli Calcio on a free transfer from Philadelphia Union.

Ascoli sit 10th in Serie B but are only six points off the promotion spots. Ascoli is the current home of US eligibles Gabe Becchi and Guiseppe Barone.

It is a shame that Fontana, a homegrown player, will be moving to a Serie B club on a free transfer.

What is the point of having this academy-focused approach if you are not going to recoup some of that money you spend on the academy with transfer dollars from the precious few that will make it that far?

Just FWIW but Union do actually get a "solidary payment" for Fontana as the team who developed him even though he left on a free transfer
