Mike McCormick, Giants First Cy Young Award Winner, Dies At 81 - N.Y. Daily News https://www.nydailynews.com/sports/...0200616-s5ysvuoagbcn3lpryd7ck5nmwu-story.html Mike McCormick, Cy Young-winner and 4-time All Star with the Giants, died Saturday after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease, the Giants announced. McCormick was 81 years old. The lefthander had a 16-year career in the big leagues, playing for the Giants, Orioles, Senators, Yankees and Royals. He had a 134-128 lifetime record with a 3.73 ERA. His greatest accomplishments came with the Giants of San Francisco, winning the Cy Young Award in 1967 — the first San Francisco Giant to win the award — when he went 22-10 with a 2.85 ERA in his second stint with the Giants. McCormick hit what is recognized as the 500th home run ever by a pitcher in the major leagues. He was a witness to history as he also gave up Hank Aaron’s 500th home run. To honor both milestones, McCormick reportedly had a personalized license plate read “Mr. 500.″ McCormick was signed by the then New York Giants as a 17-year old in 1956 for $50,000. Under Major League rules back then, it was required that such “bonus baby” players had to spend the first two years on the major league roster — meaning he made the jump from high school to the big leagues. But McCormick did not make his mark in New York. It was after the Giants skipped town and landed in San Francisco that McCormick blossomed into a Cy Young-caliber pitcher. He recorded 11 wins in 1958 and at least as many in the next three seasons. He led the National League with a 2.70 ERA in 1960, the first of four times in his career he was named an All-Star. McCormick was traded to the Baltimore Orioles after the 1962 season, where he pitched to a 4.40 ERA over 29 appearances over two seasons. He was dealt to the Washington Senators for the 1965 season, going 19-22 with a 3.42 ERA in two seasons. He was dealt back to the Giants before the 1967 season, where he went 48-37, before he was dealt to the New York Yankees on July 20, 1970. He went 2-0 with a 6.10 ERA over nine appearances, including four starts for the Yankees, who released him in March 1971. He made four appearances with the Kansas City Royals that year, before being released in June, ending his career.
