OK, so assuming my predictions are correct, we have:

    Referees:
    Lukasz Szpala
    Danielle Chesky
    Karen Abt
    Katja Koroleva
    Michael Radchuk
    Tori Penso
    Greg Dopka

    Assistants:
    Delana Quan
    Brooke Mayo
    Jennifer Garner
    Tom Felice
    Salma Perez
    Stephen McGonagle
    Meghan Mullen
    Rachel Smith

That DOES add up to 15, but it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s right. Penso arrived in Utah yesterday (Monday) so it is possible that officials aren’t all arriving at once and might be used in later stages of the tournament. In other words, no need for NWSL to waste money on hotel rooms for referees if they aren’t working matches until later. But you’re right, less AR’s than expected.

When did I say there was an anthem in England? That was the whole point of that paragraph, in fact.

My information is that Dopka isn’t there and that you’re missing an AR. There was a staggered arrival but it didn’t necessarily have to do with assignments. Think more along the lines of logistics for travel, timing, and COVID testing.

NWSL just said that players will have the option to stay in the locker room while the national anthem is played.

Which again doesn't really solve the issue... It's just a half-measure.

If anything it can be viewed as an anti-BLM protest by staying the locker room.

Also, the referees really don't have the option of staying in the locker room unless you do the coin toss in in the locker rooms.

I don't see how this tenable. They are going to have to get rid of it.

First YC of the tournament. Announcers say that 2 YC in separate games leads to a sit like the WWC.

2 ARs not on your previous list @GearRef. I would guess you’re right about Penso and @MassachusettsRef is right about Dopka.

I didn't read his post closely enough.

Turpin was the one that I thought he had missing. But Heatherly is also there instead of Smith.

So unless something has changed, Smith and Dopka were the incorrect names on the list above.

I knew that info seemed inaccurate. Perhaps my “source” was referring to a list before it was whittled down more, but I couldn’t know for sure. Turpin isn’t a shock to me since PRO are probably trying to get lots of female officials, Heatherly I really don’t know much about.

Question on the goal that was waved off: Had Abby Smith "released" the ball to the point at which Daly could attack it? Was that a correct call? Did it matter than it was a drop kick rather than a punt?

What I'm seeing in various interpretations is that a single bounce of the ball is not enough to have relinquished possession, so a drop kick and punt should be the same thing.

    Here's the video:

Here's an explanation, though I don't know this referee's credentials.

Correct in both law and spirit. Not even worthy of discussion imo.

Other refs have chimed in to support the call.

A couple of goalkeeping coaches (and great people) are really mad about being corrected.

And even in the post game commentators were still saying it was fair play.

I literally just read an article (https://sports.yahoo.com/getting-ri...-the-wrong-people-off-the-hook-194729252.html) about how not playing the anthem would be wrong. No matter what happens people are going to whine about it on Twitter. Quite frankly, I really don't care all that much what professional sports leagues or fans or players do. I just do not want to be put in a position where I as a soccer referee am forced to take a political position in public.

Refuse to walk out. I can't stand a million things about HS ball, but the vast majority of schools do announcements where we just hang out and they run to midfield one by one. It's an extra ten minutes to stretch, pee, pre game with clown HS refs that show up 5 minutes before kick, etc. Teams can easily do international walk outs without us.

Come to think of it, international walk outs on anything other than professional and international games are pretty dumb. Cold? Great, let's all freeze for another 5-8 minutes right after we spent 30 trying to warm up and stretch. Great idea!

I say do whatever hoorah pregame shit you want on your own. Let me know when I need to blow a whistle and I'll be there.

And when one of your crew mates insists on walking out precisely because they want to take a knee? Or want to stand on the field for the anthem? An absence of a single official will be more noted than if all walk out and part of the crew stands while part of it kneels.

I don't necessarily disagree personally with the sentiment in the rest of your post. But I just want to point out that there are no easy answers here. Some of the referees on Saturday wanted to kneel. Others did not. You saw a hybrid today.

I haven't done a HS game since early March, but in both Iowa and Texas most schools do the Anthem. The referees are expected to stand at attention with hats (if applicable ?) in hand and right hand on our heart. This was all before the current environment.

Allow me to lighten the mood.

I worked three games this past fall at a high school in my area whose clock operator proudly volunteered to sing the national anthem, unaccompanied, over the PA system. I happily obliged him (I don’t know why he was asking me for permission anyway).

Snickers from the players, referees, and coaches abounded at each rendition. By the third time I heard it, I wish I could report that he had improved. Alas, I don’t think the man was the school’s choir director.

i'm still amazed that the general public, players, broadcasters and coaches still seem to think this type of play is okay.

We now have what over 20 years of examples of players trying these tactics and every single time it has been disallowed. I genuinely can't think of one example where the referee allowed the goal.

Thierry Henry tried this multiple at Arsenal and he never got away with it.

It should be common knowledge and acceptance.

It's a situation you don't see very often at the highest level and, while the situation I'm about to bring up is a goalkeeper throw versus a goalkeeper punt, I suspect a lot of people remember Benzema's goal against Liverpool in the CL Final where he intercepted Karius' throw at close distance and are thinking "Well that was ok why isn't this?"
