Apparently one of the reasons behind Jorge Jesus's decision to leave Flamengo this week was because he wasn't going to have the opportunity to compete in the CWC (his main objective with the Brazilian side was precisely this title, after having lost it to Liverpool in 2019).

Of course one could argue that there were other factors present (his deep affiliation with Benfica + rumored extramarital affairs), but the press has been saying that the supposed decision to suspend this year's edition of the CWC played a major role in him choosing to not stay for at least a few months.

    So there's that...

Like some have said above, the Libertadores schedule was confirmed this week by CONMEBOL and the tournament will not be over by December: both legs of the semifinals + the final will be played in January. Hell, even the quarter finals will be played as late as December 17th o_O

So if the 2020 CWC were to take place, there are three options at the moment:

    1) Push the tournament back to late-January/early-February, something most confederations will not accept since they will already be on a very tight schedule with their respective competitions (and they can't push domestic tournament back due to Copa America/Euros/Olympics following immediately in the summer)

    2) Re-schedule the Libertadores fixture to have the 2020 Copa finish in time before the CWC. This would mean re-arranging the entire knockout stage to ensure it finishes by mid-December at latest.

    - While not impossible, it would be a hassle because it'd create an extremely tight schedule: after losing their currently-scheduled one-week break between group stages and knockouts, participating teams would be forced to travel and play a high-level competition on a back-to-back basis for 7 consecutive weeks (while still disputing their domestic tournaments, lets not forget). Plus, teams that make it to the Quarter Finals would be forced to play both matches without key players due to international FIFA dates.
    - CONMEBOL's representative would practically arrive without a break to the CWC (although something similar did happen to River in 2018 after the late final vs. Boca)
    - CONMEBOL has been trying heavily to repair their flawed image in recent years, getting stricter on respecting scheduled game times and dates. Although the can still technically re-arrange the calendar, it wouldn't look good on their image and I'm sure they've been getting hints that the CWC isn't going to happen if they chose to go through with the January dates that they just recently approved.
    3) Go ahead with the CWC without a CONMEBOL representative: get rid of the first round (both teams advance directly to the second round) and give the semifinal berth to CONCACAF / AFC / CAF. For example:
Second Round: (A) AFC v. OFC
    (B) Host v. CAF
    Semifinals: (Winner A) v. UEFA
    (Winner B) v. CONCACAF

So there are options to make the tournament happen with/without a CONMEBOL side, but it just seems illogical and really there will be complaints from diverse sides should any of those three decisions be made.

First lets see if the Libertadores is even completed. We may have a schedule, but some teams have confirmed COVID cases within their squads (the Peruvian side Binacional has 4 players confirmed ill), health officials have deemed the decision to have international travel in the middle of a pandemic bizarre and unnecessary, and others have raised logistic concerns (many airports remained closed, for example).

Too much uncertainty to be able to plan well..

There's no point to having a CWC w/o Conmebol. The simplest solution, if the December edition is on, is to simply invite the reigning Libertadores winner at the time, which would still be Flamengo.

Binacional's a great example of the absurdity of this schedule: they're not going to play a single league game in Juliaca (the league determined that the safest option for resuming operations is a Lima bubble), but will go out there to play their Libertadores matches o_O

That would anger a lot of people. Besides, who is to say Flamengo won't still be participating in the latter stages of the Libertadores by the time the CWC begins?

Plus the AFC CL is now scheduled to conclude on the 5th of December. Very tight with any scheduled CWC in that month. Any further delays would also mean no Asian representative unless there too you want to invite Al Hilal again.

I just don't see the CWC happening this year (and there is no room to play it next year either). The next CWC will be likely be the expanded version whenever they decide to play it.

No "final four" for the CAF CL. Home and away in the semis and a single (neutral) site for the final:
    https://www.bbc.com/sport/africa/53637055

The OFC however will have a single site location for the remaining matches:

The final eight in UEFA are:

    RB Leipzig - Atletico Madrid
    Atalanta - Paris St. Germain
    Manchester City - Lyon
    Barcelona - Bayern Munich

Real Madrid and Juventus were eliminated by ManCity and Lyon respectively. The competition now shifts to its single match, single site venue in Portugal where all matches will be played from Aug 12-23.

The Qatar Stars League is also almost completed. Al Duhail leads Al Rayyan by one point with two rounds to go.

was going to say, what seemed to be a done deal in Qatar has been brought to life with Al Sadd beating Al-Duhail, who also lost Mario Mandzukic who has left after a whopping 10 appearances and 2 goals. While Al Sadd have little chance of still winning the league, Al Rayyan could still pip Duhail to the title. Who knows if it's all moot but that's how it stands now.

Would have been nice to also see the UAE league come to a conclusion, but instead it was just cancelled.

2020 CWC in March or April next year?

So one of the running rumors when Concacaf hadn't yet announced the new WCQ format would be that the final round would start in April 2021. Maybe this was FIFA's idea after all, saving a presumed April 2021 window for the CWC?

And if so, then that opens up an opportunity for Concacaf to reschedule the CCL for the winter break, at a neutral site.

That's one tournament that really should just be cancelled this year. Come on FIFA ... can't you let one thing go under such extreme circumstances?

I hope whatever UEFA team qualifies is still alive in the CL at that time because then they may send a full reserve team to Qatar while they focus on the CL quaterfinals and their league campaigns. I am sure they will be fined or something but what choice would they have? Even a small injury during the CWC could force a top player to miss both the CL quarters and semis since the CL schedule is already quite intense at that time of year.

    UEFA Quarterfinals
RB Leipzig - Atletico Madrid 2:1
Atalanta - Paris St. Germain 1:2
    Manchester City - Lyon 1:3
    Barcelona - Bayern Munich 2:8

One thing is for certain, we won't have to discuss the English league schedule if the 2020 CWC does get held. :D

Spain also won't get to add to its club world title tally (Bayern made sure of that!).

Instead the 2019/2020 UCL will go to either Germany or France:

RB Leipzig - Paris St. Germain
    Lyon - Bayern Munich

On another note, both Al Duhail and Al Rayyan won this weekend meaning that the Qatar Stars League will be decided on the final day. Al Rayyan will play Al Wakrah (at Al Sadd Stadium) while Al Duhail will meat Al-Ahli in erm Al-Wakrah  Duhail are a point ahead so will win the title if they win, neither Ahli or Wakrah have anything to play for really so both should win. Apparently they are selling tickets and letting in a few fans so may go to see the clincher, but as I live in Al Duhail and would have to drive all the way across town to Al Wakrah not so sure...

It is also interesting to note that Bayern are the only previous UCL winners. Although at this point they are massive favorites. Not sure we will get to see a "new" winner.

PSG are the first French club to reach the UCL final since 2004 (yes, Monaco are a full FFF member). I don't particularly like quasi-state funded clubs, but it beats the billboard corporate identity of the Red Bull teams.

    Lyon - Bayern tomorrow.

Maybe Qatar will have 2 clubs in the CWC then :D

I got my ticket for Al Duhail vs Al Ahli title decider in Al Janoub.. it's only about an eight of the stadium that will be seated with people sitting 2 rows apart each way. Will be interesting to watch a match in a huge stadium like that with hardly anyone in it.. hope that's not what the CWC is like but anyway will be great to see some live football... last game I attended was ironically... PSG in February!

Al Janoub is the stadium that was supposed to be used in last year's CWC right? The one in Education City?

Sunday's UEFA Champions League final is set:

Paris St. Germain - Bayern Munich

Lyon had some good chances before Bayern scored their first but then their surprise run came to an end (Lyon finished only 7th in Ligue 1).

But the first (potential) 2020 CWC participant will be the QSL champion on Friday.

No that was Education City + Al Sadd, instead they put it in Al Khalifa Stadium. Al Janoob is in Al Wakra which is south of Doha. Why Al Duhail, who are located in the north of Doha are playing their final game in Al Wakra I really have no idea. Janoob hosted Gulf Cup semifinal + last years Emir Cup but not any CWC matches. Honestly I don't really like going there as it's so far away. Al Duhail is pretty close though but too small.

Al Duhail secured the QSL title today and will take the host spot if the competition gets played.

Yep, and in case you were wondering, yours truly was there to see it... kind of surreal watching a game like that in a half empty.. erm, I mean 90% empty stadium but this is the new reality I guess...

Scoreless at the break in the UCL final. Looking forward to the second half. Things just got interesting before the halftime whistle.

Interesting side-note, both Bayern and PSG have won all their domestic titles going into the final. In PSG's case that includes the last version of the French League Cup. If the 2020 CWC is played and PSG wins the UCL that would place them in a position to beat Barcelona's 2009 sextuple (whereas Bayern could equalize it given there is no German League Cup).

I guess I know who @unclesox is rooting for. :D
