It's not discouraging as MLS teams are gradually doing better overall. This year is an off year. But imagine the joy when a MLS team does win.
Considering how big of a lead that Liga MX had on MLS? Naw. Progress is being made, even if it is rather slow... It wasn't too long ago that Liga MX teams would bring up their second teams and academy players and they'd either beat their MLS opponents, or keep it close until the final 30 min of the game. The Liga MX team would then sub in one or two offensive players and then they'd score a couple of goals and they'd win. Now the LigaMX teams are using mostly starters and while there are curb stompings, the individual games are getting closer and closer.. That's not to say MLS is close to being on equal footing with LigaMX, but its' getting close enough there could be a "Cinderella run".
Hear that! Talk about getting some luck in regional play, when away goals was the standard tie breaker for regional Cup ties around the globe, CONCACAF of course still did not use this method in 2007. So us in Houston witnessed our guys defeat arguably the most accomplished Liga MX squad of any era in Pachuca 2-0 here in Houston. Then lost 2-4 away to Pachuca. That's an MLS team scoring two goals in the defending Liga MX's home. Thus the tie ended 4-4 but the away leg went to extra time and Chaco Jimenez hit a f'n bombaso in overtime and won it for Pachuca. D.C. United played Mother Chivas in the other Semi-Final and Pachuca went on to the CWC. After knocking out that Incredible Pachuca side, perhaps we get past Chivas after getting lucky that CONCACAF had away goals in place. This in 2007 no less for MLS 1.0+ era.
I’m sure some individuals are bothered, but as a central organization I doubt the league cares too much. Probably much more concerned about other areas of tangible growth.
The weird thing is that MLS 1.0 teams seem to have pulled off a lot more upsets... Especially in the early days. Was that DC United team THAT good?
It was a different format. DCU won when when it was a knockout round format over 5 days at a single location.
Yeah I know that, but then they also beat Vasca de Gamma so they basically won everything there is to win... (and I'm aware that both legs were in the USA too)
There was the corner that started to be turned there in the mid 0t's with MLS teams being able to win the CCC or CCL away fixtures and advance. It was one thing to defeat the Champions of Panama but then to go on and take points away to a Liga MX side. Off the top of my head, after those incredible battles us in Houston endured with Pachuca in 2007, we went on to tie Pumas at their home 4-4 in 2008 iirc. Jeez has it been that long ago! Which was like the second time ever an MLS team took points on the road to a Mexican club in the home and away format that we all know of today. Regarding D.C.U. in that early era, they had all the positions on lock in league play, recall they almost won the Double Double in the first seasons with winning MLS Cup and the Open Cup twice in a row, losing the USOC in 1997 iirc. Then going on to play Vasco in the InterAmerican Cup. Which considering that Liga MX clubs used to participate in the Copa Libertadores and both MLS and Liga MX clubs used to participate in Copa Sudamericana, a return to crowning a champion of our hemisphere seems like a no brainer for TV and fan interest. Club America vs. River Plate or Tigres vs. Boca Jrs should get the InterAmerican Cup trophy out of retirement.

4-1 and the game between Cruz Azul and Monterrey is stopped because the ignorant fans are doing the chant.
With Philadelphia out, the MLS drought extends to 21 years. It also means Mexico extend their winning streak to a new world record: CONCACAF: 16 – Mexico (ongoing) OFC: 8 – New Zealand (end of streak 2018) UEFA: 6 – England (end of streak 1982) CONMEBOL: 4 – Argentina (end of streak 1970 and 1975); Brazil (end of streak 2013) AFC: 3 – South Korea (end of streak 1998) CAF: 3 – Cameroon (end of streak 1980) That said, next year looks promising for MLS. Club America and both Monterrey clubs are not participating. Combined with the fact that MLS will be a "top league" next year - what could possibly go wrong?
That’s a fairly large article about attendance, demographics, and TV ratings. I don’t see Garber guaranteeing any CCL success despite his hopeful line at the end. Your scorn seems a bit misdirected to be honest.

Not that I'm reading that much about this incident, but it sounds like no Union supporters were involved. It sounds like it was CA supporters on both sides.
The Four Mexican teams look to be the weaker class for some time. Pumas is imploding this season ( ). Cruz Azul is sufering from Campeonitis. Leon is, well, Leon. And Santos is an unremakable middle table team. As always, things might (will) look very different in six months, but I think this will still be a weak group of teams in 2022.
