The Australian transplant, Jarred Gillet, had a wild opening 30 minutes in the Brentford-Bournemouth second leg semi-final. Penalty, sending off, penalty shouts, you name it he’s had it. No argument on the red card, just a stupid play.

also, the opening goal was scored when Brentford failed to leave a defender back on a corner, and Bournemouth had a breakaway from about 85 yards in!

On a different forum, the refs following this game were, on consensus, very positive about Gillett’s performance. They were impressed at how he was able to maintain control without smothering the game by calling every contact as a free kick.

To be honest, I can't get thaaaaat excited about this performance, which was still a (very) good one in real extremis.

Gillett was pretty limited in his movement style - which really surprised me - he was stuck in the centre and stayed in the background, even in the really intense early moments of the game. He rather survived this period more than excelled IMO.

PGMOL will be very happy about all these calls so my view is pretty inane, but 54' and (especially) 29' should be given IMO. 90' is verrry close to SFP in my eyes, but ultimately I agree with yellow card.

Whisper it quietly, but I was actually more impressed with the ref of the other Chship playoff game today, John Brooks (former FIFA AR), though I only saw the 2H and the match was much easier.

Hopefully PGMOL promote (at least!) two referees from SG2 to SG1 and that can include both Brooks and Gillett.

spot on with this. This match has been a handful for Atwell IMO. He’s had to manage multiple rash challenges. Grealish still isn’t cautioned and had multiple cautions for Chelsea already as the score line changed.

Didn’t get a good view. small PIP window
Didn’t see much contact on that 51’ PK for Leicester City.

could someone with a better view give an opinion?

Potential handball in that goal for Spurs? Should be interesting. May be wrong, we'll see.

I didn't see any sort of handling on the third Spurs goal.

Azpilicueta sent off for VC for a hit on the face of Grealish. You have to wonder if Grealish's antics had been dealt with earlier that Chelsea wouldn't have reached that level of frustration. The VC call was the right call, but I wonder if we would have ever got to that point if Attwell had cautioned Grealish earlier.

Having rewatched it, it never should have been a PK.

Apparently it wasn’t the right call.

    https://www.standard.co.uk/sport/fo...ed-card-overturned-jack-grealish-b937194.html

We wouldn’t want a star captain sitting three matches to start the next season for hitting an opponent directly in the face. That would be wrong. Can’t have that.

A laughable way to conclude a laughable season in many officiating respects.

How isn't that a Red, he swings right into the players face? What is going on anymore?

He didn't even argue the RC! Just accepted it and walked off. My goodness this is a farce.

Absolutely scandalous, I'm totally fed up of how this country manages to undermine referees and refereeing almost as well as any other in the world.

They should let the former players and managers on that appeal committee referee the games, maybe then we could avoid brave, unpopular (and correct!!) decisions altogether.

There should be no surprise that officials at the professional level are so reviled by fans and pundits. Even when they are right, they are wrong. Yes, Grealish embellished. But there was obvious contact. It really is ridiculous at this point. I'm half-surprised no one has rescinded Gillett's DOGSO red for that rugby tackle in the Brentford game because, "Well, he didn't tackle him THAT hard . . ."

Devil's Advocate: because it hasn't been so many times in England.
I agree it is a red. But we have seen far worse go unpunished in England.

I heard from a die hard Chelsea supporter who couldn’t believe the red got overturned!

Anyway, Dave (which is what the supporters call him) probably is a little ticked that it got overturned as he would have had a few more days on holiday!

I've always wondered....do the players get paid while sitting out when they are suspended for red cards?

They must! I mean, the salaries are so varied, like Phil Foden of ManCity makes half f what the third choice ‘keeper makes.

I thought players forfeited the salary related to games they were suspended. I don't know that for the PL, but it is certainly the norm for US sport leagues.

a quick search shows that English clubs do pay suspended players. A few years ago, Chelsea paid close to £2 million pounds to suspended players.

In US, a suspended player in most sports is not paid while suspended.

Christopher Kavanagh will handle the Championship playoff final between Brentford and Swansea on Saturday afternoon. VAR will not be in operation.

Tony Harrington, a very nice guy but not the best referee IMO, has the League One final, so I'd put him, John Brooks and Jarred Gillett as those in the shakeup for promotion to SG1.

A familiar name in Bobby Madley has the League Two promotion decider. UEFA had big plans for him before PGMOL removed Madley, so it should be no surprise he finished as the strongest National List ref of the season.

Slightly off topic, but is this the first year that the order of games has been Championship/L1/L2? In past years, I've remembered watching the Championship promotion final on Memorial Day.

PGMOL want such scenes where the attacker is running wide to be assessed as SPA. Much more interesting is the potential SFP minutes before which I only caught a replay of.
