Well bringing in Cannon for Adams makes it pretty much a certainty that Adams was going to play right back in this tournament. I'm out on this team for a while. I just don't see wasting a lot of time watching the Gold Cup.
I don’t mind Cannon being called in but it beyond sickens me that Berhalter thinks Adams is a right back. It’s absolutely nauseating to see how dumb our coach is.
i dont think adams' absence gives berhalter an excuse to "lose the gold cup" or anything big picture, but i do think it gives him cover in playing lima in that hybrid rb/cb role. i think adams to lima there is a lot less dropoff than playing bradley/trapp as the 6 rather than adams. i dont see this making a huge difference, to be honest. gk steffen rb/cm lima cb miazga cb gonzalez lcb ream cm mckennie dm bradley am pulisic rw boyd st altidore lw arriola i cant imagine not taking full points in this game, though i do think we are in a dogfight with panama and t&t after. best case for this one is actually seeing some fight in our dogs- cause in the last two friendlies we saw a lot of rolling over waiting for belly rubs. decent college teams could play with guyana- we need to show some freaking heart before were down a goal at the half against panama.
You know, I get that Bobby Wood had a bad year. That's supposedly why he didn't get a call. Cannon is somewhere in the 200s on Whoscored for MLS. Why does playing poorly in the BL get you off the 40 man roster, but playing poorly in MLS doesn't matter?
Neither of these things matter. The real question is: Do you have a warm, personal connection with Gregg himself?
I assume Lima is replacing Adams, but I just find it a bit amusing/agitating that he’s willing to bring in an actual RB when our best ball-winning midfielder is now out due to injury.
TBF, the only other 2 central midfielders available* in the 40-man squad are Nagbe and Mihailovic, neither of whom are ball-winning midfielders. But that's a squad construction choice by Berhalter. *since Lletget is injured.
whoscored ratings are not definitive nor absolute. Cannon has shown well with USMNT - if GGG wants a RB cannon is a good option, imo. Now...I could see a Bobby Wood callup but he hasnt started a match in how mnay months? he wasn't playing b/c of injuries too, i think....something about his knees....I'd have called him up over zardes...but wood didn't play in columbus/mls so that was unlikely....
https://www.espn.com/soccer/united-states/story/3873371/adams-withdraws-from-us-gold-cup-squad I know it is just semantics (perhaps) but the phrase "Adams withdraws" is odd. "Adams withdraws from Gold Cup" is a lot different than even "Adams will miss Gold Cup with Injury" or something along those lines.....
The part that makes me laugh is that this is Greg Berhalter who is going to re-invent the game with some super-tricky new tactics. Lets be honest; he doesn't exactly have the bona fides to be reworking how the game is played. He can't just select 11 of our best, put them in a good formation and try to improve with time. He is going to be the second coming of Rinus Michels (Dutch Total Football Guy) and revolutionize the right back position. It reminds me of Steve Samson and his 3-6-1. These guys aren't as visionary as they think.
I still think we make the finals, Pulisic, Weston and Altidore are too good in the middle for anyone to handle
So I'm going to be honest here. I don't know much about Cannon. 2 caps. Played OK against Peru IIRC. Anyone who watching FCD know what his deal is?
Pulisic might develop a deathly fear of flying soon. It is amazingly annoying how he is "replaced' by an actual RB. I think we should just do a poll on BS for what formation to run and then poll each position for starters. My money is that team is better than what we will see from GB.
I think the point I may have been getting at was that a C/DM who was selected by the coach to play RB is now having his roster spot replaced by an actual RB (not another midfielder who can also slide into RB). I just wish we had a RB playing RB to begin with.
The way the women are playing, the men can expect a lot of shit unless they play well: The USMNT has 10 World Cup goals in the last 12 years. The USWNT has 10 World Cup goals in the last hour and a half.— Tim Reynolds (@ByTimReynolds) June 11, 2019
