Porto's sporting director was on TV addressing the Nakajima situation and seems to strike a sympathetic tone.

Basically he said that the issue was down to Nakajima's wife being in a high-risk category with asthma, and that they held a 40 minute Zoom meeting to try and convince him to return to training with his teammates to no avail. He acknowledges that there are issues to sort out but that they will resolve the situation, and meanwhile Nakajima is training and remains a part of the team.

Another daily Nakajima update, courtesy of O Jogo.

The club president Jorge Nuno de Lima Pinto da Costa gave a media interview in which he affirmed Nakajima's place in the team for the next season. His perspective was that Shoya "experienced an involuntary paranoia" as a result of the challenges on his family exerted by the pandemic, exacerbated by being unable to fully grasp the local situation as a foreigner. Pinto da Costa asserts that there is "no death penalty" and hence Nakajima will be fully integrated going into the next season.

With respect to his absence from the title celebrations, Pinto da Costa said that Nakajima chose to receive the medal later because he simply didn't feel comfortable mingling with teammates in close quarters at that moment, the same reason he is still training alone at club facilities. The president also took a shot at TV commentators who insinuated that Nakajima had been barred from the medal ceremony.

He needs to at least try learn Portuguese. If he came back speaking some it probably would go a long way to patching things up. Sign of intent.

Nakajima didn't attend the first day of the pre-season training camp, despite being already in Portugal.

Reports from Portuguese press said that Nakajima refused to attend until some personal issues are sorted out.

I guess he wants assurances that Serg.io Conceicao will not mistreat him:cool:.

Nakajima should employ some japanese former pro-wrestler as bodyguard and go to the training camp.

Nakajima was absent from the whole first week of Porto's preseason training camp.

Reports suggested that Porto will let him leave on loan, with some Japanese clubs such as Urawa, Nagoya, FC Tokyo, and Yokohama F Marinos mentioned in the Portuguese press as possible destinations.

Nakajima is not in the matchday squad yet, but his shirt number #10 was confirmed for this season.

He was injured, and had to train individually last week. He only returned to team training in the last couple of days before the match.
It was expected he wouldn't make the squad.

I was shocked when I saw him on the sidelines ready to be subbed in.

Got few touches, and some decent passing and positioning.

Sergio Conceicao and Pepe were complaining after the match about the PK and FK decision made by the referee, as Manchester City scored two goals from those incidents and to come from 0-1 behind to win the match.

When the ship is sinking why don't try any cards? Nakajima subbed in when the match is already lost is not something positive.
