I didn't get to see the game. Did we come out looking for the win or was the team playing conservatively as a draw was enough?
Thanks to Ricky Gervais' first ever Canadian show, I only got home in time to see the second half.....the first part of that half we looked like we were trying to win (so I assume the first half was like that too)...the last 15 minutes, however, we seemed (appropriately) to adopt a more "just don't lose" approach. Again, it was (to my eye) a much more mature looking Canadian performance than I can recall.....our current squad looks very comfortable/confident on the ball throughout the line up.....a lot less easy to rattle than previous versions of CMNT.
That's probably a generational thing. Up until 10 years ago our mentality has been "we're Canadian and we're way in over our heads if it isn't hockey". The current crop of young players has been groomed since MLS came into being up here and the mentality has since evolved into "We're Canadian and we can do anything we put our minds to".
does everything on BS now get turned into a generational thing? I am talking about the last time we saw them play in competitive matches...in the first round of the current world cup qualifying under different management....same core players...but different approach/style/attitude.....I would suggest that it does not matter if you are a boomer/a genxer/a millenial....you should be able to see the difference between the last WC qualifying "run" and this Gold Cup performance.
I'm not talking about the generation of the fans, I'm talking about the generation of the players. And yes, that's relevant. They're being developed under a whole new attitude to those who came before. I think that's a major factor in the point that you're making.
Pretty stoked for tonight. Our first playoff match in 8 years. We're pretty much evenly matched for this one so anything can happen. Jamaica has a super solid defence, let's see if our new found offensive prowess can penetrate it. Good news is that Alphonso is available tonight.
^ Echo that. I'm also very happy that, for the first time I can remember against anyone but a true minnow, the question is whether Canada's offence can break down the other team's defence. So much nicer than Floro's "let's hold them to zero and see if we can maybe get a chance to score once on the counter".
Zambrano might go 4-4-2 F: Larin, Cavallini M: Davies, Arfield, Piette, Junior Hoillett D: De Jong, Jakovic, Vitoria, Petrasso G: Borjan That's a solid team
Zambrano might go 4-1-3-2 -----------Larin, Cavallini-------------- M: Davies, Arfield, Junior Hoillett --------------Piette--------------------- De Jong, Jakovic, Vitoria, Petrasso ---------------Borjan-------------------- This is even better as Piette is an absolute beast at Defensive midfield
Given the scenario of this game, I'm thinking that what may turn the tables in our favour is Piette's tenacity. I'm also hopeful that having both Larin and Davies out there will be enough to keep the Jamaican defence on their heels.
Yep, we should go all out offensively on Jamaica because after them it's Mexico and we'll have to be more pragmatic against them
Could they go 4-3-3? ------Davies, Larin, Cavallini---------- ------------Arfield, Hoillett--------------- -----------------Piette--------------------- De Jong, Jakovic, Vitoria, Petrasso ---------------Borjan--------------------
They could but I'd prefer some version of two up front so that we have more defensive help when it is needed. Of course, the four in the midfield could alter their exact formation to provide more offense or defense as needed. Flat, diamond, etc.
Here we go. Two very evenly matched sides here today. I think we have the better defence, but Canada's attack has the edge over ours as far as productivity goes and is definitely concerning between Hoilett, Larin, and Davies. Hope we can hold up.
Jamaica is one of the most honorable playing teams around. Always enjoy watching them. If they weren't playing against us they'd be the ones that I'd be cheering for.
Gordon: I want the ball Alphonso Davies: Ok Davies needs to step up if he's gonna have a chance here. That was not a good look. Better cross there tho
Larin sucks and has no chemistry with his teammates, very disappointed that Zambrano did not start Cavallini.
Entertaining game. I love this Canada, don't remember seeing them play like this. They should've scored by now though, I hope they can turn things around.
