It's that time again. Start thinking about the players who will be drafted, and predict where they'll get drafted at. We're not sure what teams will have which picks in each round at this point, but we can still plug em' in for now, and guess where each player will be selected in numerical order. For now, we'll leave out any potential expansion teams, since we don't know for sure who (and how many) there could be. This draft is actually more loaded than I initially thought. Still a notch or two behind the 2014 rookie class, but not as far behind as I had originally perceived. 1st Round 1.) Washington: MF - Morgan Brian (Virginia) (seems like a natural fit with her UVA sorority girls) 2.) Houston: D - Kristin Grubka (Florida State) (Waldrum thinks very highly of her) 3.) Boston: MF - Samantha Mewis (UCLA) (the Mewis sisters are reunited) 4.) Sky Blue: DM - Whitney Church (Penn St.) (prospective DM as a pro. SBFC could use another DM) 5.) Chicago: D - Abby Dahlkemper (UCLA) 6.) WNY: MF - Daphne Corboz (Georgetown) (may turn out to be a better scoring version of Shim) 7.) FCKC: D - Ally Courtnall (UCLA) 8.) Seattle: DM/D - Sarah Killion (UCLA) 9.) Portland: F - Taylor Uhl (Stanford) (Foxhoven role. Super-Sub who will score off the bench) 2nd Round 10.) Washington: D - Megan Campbell (Florida State) (Ireland) 11.) Houston: MF - Chioma Ubogagu (Stanford) (her stock as dropped a bit recently) 12.) Boston: MF - Jamia Fields (Florida State) 13.) Sky Blue: F/MF - Kate Schwindel (West Virginia) 14.) Chicago: F - Jannelle Flaws (Illinois) 15.) WNY: D - Caprice Dydasco (UCLA) 16.) FCKC: F - Annie Kunz (Texas A&M) (another tall blonde forward for FCKC, what the heck?) 17.) Seattle: GK - Katelyn Rowland (UCLA) 18.) Boston: (From Portland - Betos trade): F/MF - Cloe Lacasse (Iowa) 3rd Round 19.) Washington: F - Shannon Mayrose (Virginia Tech) 20.) Houston: D - Sammy Scofield (Notre Dame) 21.) Boston: D - Megan Oyster (UCLA) 22.) Sky Blue: D - Taylor Leach (South Carolina) 23.) Chicago: MF - Havana Solaun (Florida) 24.) WNY: F - Hannah Wilkinson (Tennessee) (New Zealand) 25.) FCKC: D - Satara Murray (North Carolina) 26.) Seattle: F - Sofia Huerta (Santa Clara) 27.) Portland: MF - Dagny Brynjarsdottir (Florida State) (Iceland) 4th Round 28.) Washington: D/MF - Emily Hurd (Penn St.) (may play outside back at the next level) 29.) Houston: F - Alexa Newfield (North Carolina) 30.) Boston: GK - Sabrina D'Angelo (South Carolina) 31.) Sky Blue: F - Rosie White (UCLA) (New Zealand) 32.) Chicago: F - Rachel Tejada (Illinois State) 33.) WNY: F - Alex Doll (Stanford) 34.) FCKC: MF - Annie Speese (Florida) (may get to play with her good friend Tymrak again) 35.) Seattle: MF - Rebekah Kurle (Portland) (the tradition continues in drafting Pilots) 36.) Portland: D - Meghan Streight (Texas A&M) Summary This draft is quite loaded compared to the average draft, but still below the 2010 and 2014 drafts. Still clearly better than the 2013 draft. Some very nice players here. UCLA with a whopping 8 players.
It's quite early for this. In case you want to update the trades: 1st Round Seattle -> Boston 2nd Round Seattle -> Boston Portland -> Seattle Chicago -> Portland Portland -> Boston (you've got that one covered) 3rd Round Seattle -> Boston Boston (from SEA) -> Chicago KC -> Seattle
Thanks for all the trades. I forgot about Boston getting a 1st round pick from Seattle (in the Leroux trade). But Boston has nearly all of Seattle's picks (1st round, 2nd round, and 3rd round) ???
They did at one time, but they traded Seattle's 3rd round pick to Chicago (the NWSL news item I linked to explicitly stated Boston traded Seattle's pick and not their own), so now they only have 2 of them.

So Boson has 8 picks in the 2015 draft? Holy Cheez-it. WOW, they could realistically end up with a draft similar to this: 3.) MF - Samantha Mewis 8.) MF - Sarah Killion 12.) MF - Jamia Fields (maybe takes over Heather O'Reilly's role one day) 17.) D - Arin Gilliland 18.) F /MF - Cloe Lacasse 21.) D - Megan Oyster 26.) F - Sofia Huerta 30.) GK - Sabrina D'Angelo
Alright, so here's the mock draft with three new expansion teams. And with Boston having 7 draft picks (any trades of draft picks are updated in this mock draft). 1st Round 1.) Washington: MF - Morgan Brian (Virginia) 2.) Los Angeles: D - Abby Dahlkemper (UCLA) 3.) Toronto: D - Ally Courtnall (UCLA) 4.) Philadelphia: D - Kristin Grubka (Florida State) 5.) Houston: MF - Chioma Ubogagu (Stanford) 6.) Boston: MF - Samantha Mewis (UCLA) 7.) Sky Blue: DM - Whitney Church (Penn State) 8.) Chicago: D - Megan Campbell (Florida State) (Ireland) 9.) WNY: DM - Sarah Killion (UCLA) (after losing Zerboni in the expansion draft to LA) 10.) FCKC: MF - Daphne Corboz (Georgetown) (FCKC could use another attacking mid) 11.) Boston: MF - Jamia Fields (Florida State) 12.) Portland: F - Taylor Uhl (Stanford) 2nd Round 13.) Washington: D - Megan Oyster (UCLA) 14.) Los Angeles: D - Caprice Dydasco (UCLA) 15.) Toronto: F/M - Cloe Lacasse (Iowa) (Canada) 16.) Philadelphia: F - Hannah Wilkinson (Tennessee) (New Zealand) 17.) Houston: GK - Katelyn Rowland (UCLA) (after losing Henninger in the expansion draft to LA) 18.) Boston: D - Satara Murray (North Carolina) 19.) Sky Blue: F/MF - Kate Schwindel (West Virginia) 20.) Boston: F - Rachel Tejada (Illinois State) 21.) WNY: D - Arin Gilliland (Kentucky) 22.) FCKC: D - Jaelene Hinkle (Texas Tech) (FCKC gets their outside back) 23.) Boston: GK - Sabrina D'Angelo (South Carolina) (after losing Kranich in the expansion draft to Philly) 24.) Seattle: F - Sofia Huerta (Santa Clara) 3rd Round 25.) Mock Drafts for years 2016 through 2020 have been omitted, can you please resubmit them? So it looks like you have Washington in the Cellar for 2014, can you list the final standings for 2014? Thanks!
M Sam Mewis, UCLA: Part of what is going to be a strong contingent of Bruins eyeing a pro soccer career, Mewis is a talented player who sometimes lacks consistency at the collegiate level. An attack-minded center midfielder who can unlock defenses and help control games with her passing ability, she’ll need to show well in the fall in order to climb into the first two rounds. --------------------- Is this a joke? She needs to improve to move up rounds in the draft but gets called up for the NT. When did 3rd round prospects make it to the NT camps? No Courtnall, no NC but she isn't on the top 15 list. Courtnall has Rampone and Dunn DNA, The Speed Force. You don't train that because they are born with it.
just travis clarke's ideas. he's not the one deciding how good players are for ussoccer. she plays for canada. "plays" is a euphemism of course. last year she didn't even want to play. may be why neither nation has her on their roster. her focus may be on something else.
Mewis was ranked #25 at the end of the season. And a lot of those ahead of her are seniors (she's the 8th Junior). She'll definitely be Boston's first round pick if she is still available, there is no way they'll pass her up. Courtnall on the other hand is ranked #95. Yet you have no problem with her getting called up? You do know she would be behind Krieger, Dunn, O'Hara, Cox, Mewis, and Klingenberg on the depth chart...
Pesky insistence by the USSF and FIFA that she actually be a US national. Does she even want to play for Canada?
I saw one article which said Canada. Someone produced another article with the USA. Herdman is already on my Yahoo list with Rizzo and Cuellar. Sermanni is making his way to it.
Doesn't matter what you (or I) think, what matters is where Sermanni rates her. He will choose to play all of the players I listed as an outside back before he would ever think of Courtnall... and I'm not sure if she would even be next. Maybe he'd choose Rampone or LePeilbet. That's all I'm saying. The point of the depth chart is to show how the US are not in need of someone that can play as an outside back at the moment (a shocker I know!) compared to the depth at CAM, which is pretty much just Holiday and Brian right now (Lloyd, Averbuch, and Brooks are DMs, for better or worse; again, this is not my opinion, but who TS is calling in and how he uses them; is Lloyd better as a CAM than DM? Yes.). And even if he were to drop Mewis, it still doesn't change the fact that Courtnall will not see playing time with the full USWNT any time soon (like I've said before, she has a ton of potential, she's just not there yet). And she's not gonna switch to the US just to never play. If she has a great senior year though, I can definitely see things changing.
I don't follow the college game that closely, and I admit to a bias in favor of the players on the flanks -- maybe because its easier to see them than the middle players. That being said, the college players on the draft list who have most impressed me are Morgan Brian -- VA. No suprise there. Courtnall and Dydasco -- UCLA. Speed kills for Courtnall and Dydasco is the little engine who could. Sofia Huerta -- Santa Clara. She's not shy about going for the goal. How will she do now that her two compadres -- Johnston and Marlborough -- have graduated? Megan Campbell -- Fla. St. -- Good defender and awesome throw in. The first soccer star who'll make it big because of her throwing arm?
I havent really seen enough of Courtnall to know if she could consistently make the cross, but if she can and she wanted to play for the US...u make u her the back up right back and Dunn the back up left back and by the next cycle u might have the two best two shut down backs in the world.
