Jerry Coleman, Yankee Legend, War Hero and Hall of Fame Broadcaster, Dies at 89 - N.Y. Daily News http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/b...nd-war-hero-coleman-dies-89-article-1.1567084 RIP Jerry. Excellent obituary from the Daily News with some great photos. I recall Coleman as a Yankees broadcaster from the late 60s when the team was awful. What none of the the obits will probably mention was that Jerry was edged out as a Yankees announcer because of friction with Phil Rizzuto. Phil was always prone to get carried away and act silly during the games. This endeared him to the fans and made him a beloved figure, but it would drive Coleman crazy. During the commercial breaks between innings, he'd let Phil know he was acting foolish and to knock it off. Phil got bitter about this and would complain to management and eventually Jerry and the Yanks parted ways. There's no way the Yankees were going to dump Rizzuto. Well, I'm with Coleman on this one. Phil could be infuriating. Often were the times I would turn off the television audio and listen to the radio broadcast when Phil was doing the game on TV. The Yankees had a three inning rotation with their announcers, so you only had to put up with Rizzuto for part of the game, but those innings could be outrageous. It was maddening when Bill White became a Yankee broadcaster and have to hear him dumb himself down when he was working alongside Rizzuto. Outfielder Vernon Wells has been designated for assignment. It was done to clear space on the 40-man roster for lefty reliever Matt Thornton, who was signed in mid-December for 2 years/$7 million. Brian Roberts officially added to the 40-man roster now that A-Rod is off it. He'll make $2 million in 2014, but could more than double that with incentives based on his amount of plate appearances. The Yankees came to terms with all five players who filed for salary arbitration earlier this week... --Brett Gardner, 1 year / $5.6 million --David Robertson, 1 year / $5.21 million --Ivan Nova, 1 year / $3.3 million --Shawn Kelley, 1 year / $1,767,500 --Francisco Cervelli, 1 year / $700,000 This reportedly brings the Yankees payroll (for luxury tax purposes) up to a little more than $170M. Now we'll see if they land Tanaka. The deadline for his signing with a major league team is January 24.

Jeter's last coming up. I suppose this will involve a season-long (and mind-numbing) lovefest like we had with Mariano. Least anyone think I'm being mean with that remark, I'll save you the trouble of pointing it out and simply plead guilty. Just to let you know: I'm a great "enough is enough" type of person. I live in New York and the press here will not be letting go of this. They didn't with Rivera and they won't with The Captain. I'll be catatonic by September from the media bombardment and the Yankee-hype machine. Here's the deal: I want to Yankees to win the whole thing this year. Distractions won't help -- and that's what this is. Capisce? Question about the future: Will this spur the Yankees on to signing Stephen Drew?
