Hiroki Kuroda was removed from last night's game in the 2nd inning after getting hit in the middle right finger by a line drive. He continued to pitch briefly after the injury but had clearly lost his control. There were no broken bones or damaged tendons. Kuroda is next scheduled to start on Monday against the Indians. If he is unable to go, Adam Warren will get the call. On the plus side of yesterday's loss, Travis Hafner hit the first Yankee homer of the season and Vernon Wells later belted a 3-run shot. Clay Rapada was given his unconditional release. vs. Boston Red Sox (2-0) at Yankee Stadium Red Sox 8, Yankees 2 Red Sox 7, Yankees 4 Thu.- Andy Pettitte vs. Ryan Dempster; 7:05 on YES, MLBN vs. Detroit Tigers (1-1) at Comerica Park Fri.- Ivan Nova vs. Doug Fister; 1:08 on YES, MLBN Sat.- David Phelps (0-0, 6.75) vs. Max Scherzer; 4:05 on FOX Sun.- CC Sabathia (0-1, 7.20) vs. Justin Verlander (1-0, 0.00); 1:08 on YES, TBS A.L. The old guard combined last night for the first victory of 2013: Andy and Mo. Brett Gardner and Francisco Cervelli homered. Eduardo Nunez batting .400 in place of Jeter, now reportedly not expected to return until early May. David Aardsma was unconditionally released. vs. Boston Red Sox (2-1) at Yankee Stadium Red Sox 8, Yankees 2 Red Sox 7, Yankees 4 Yankees 4, Red Sox 2 vs. Detroit Tigers (1-2) at Comerica Park Fri.- Ivan Nova vs. Doug Fister; 1:08 on YES, MLBN Sat.- David Phelps (0-0, 6.75) vs. Max Scherzer; 4:05 on FOX Sun.- CC Sabathia (0-1, 7.20) vs. Justin Verlander (1-0, 0.00); 1:08 on YES, TBS A.L. So now it's Eduardo Nunez getting hit by a pitch and ending up with a bruised bicep. Maybe the Yankees should build a hospital. Jason Nix will be at short this afternoon. Kevin Youkilis smacked a 2-run homer yesterday for his first Yankee dinger. Unfortunately, Prince Fielder hit out 2 and had a 5 RBI day for Detroit. Phil Hughes is a surprise call up and will start today's game. He had been originally scheduled to pitch for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre tonight. Cody Eppley sent down to make room. vs. Detroit Tigers (2-2) at Comerica Park Tigers 8, Yankees 3 Sat.- Phil Hughes vs. Max Scherzer; 4:05 on FOX Sun.- CC Sabathia (0-1, 7.20) vs. Justin Verlander (1-0, 0.00); 1:08 on YES, TBS A.L. Beautiful combined shutout of Detroit yesterday by CC, Robertson and Mariano. Production from the lineup has been acceptable but a few guys need the kick it up: Gardner batting .160 (4-for-25), Cano .130 (3-for-23), Ichiro .111 (2-for-18). vs. Detroit Tigers (3-3) at Comerica Park Tigers 8, Yankees 3 Tigers 8, Yankees 4 Yankees 7, Tigers 0 vs. Cleveland Indians (3-3) at Progressive Field Mon.- Hiroki Kuroda (0-1, 13.50) vs. Ubaldo Jimenez (0-0, 1.50); 4:05 on YES, MLBN Tue.- Andy Pettitte (1-0, 1.13) vs. Carlos Carrasco; 7:05 on YES Wed.- Ivan Nova (0-1, 7.71) vs. Brett Myers (0-1, 12.60); 7:05 on YES, ESPN2 Thu.- Phil Hughes (0-1, 6.75) vs. Zach McAllister (0-1, 3.00); 7:05 on YES, MLBN A.L. 3 straight wins. And who said the Yankee lineup lacked strength this year? 5 home runs in yesterday's beat down of Cleveland. Cano waking up with 3 homers, 3 doubles and 7 RBIs over the last 2 games. The Yanks re-signed lefty reliever Clay Rapada to a minor league deal. vs. Cleveland Indians (3-5) at Progressive Field Yankees 11, Indians 6 Yankees 14, Indians 1 Wed.- Ivan Nova (0-1, 7.71) vs. Corey Kluber; 7:05 on YES, ESPN2 Thu.- Phil Hughes (0-1, 6.75) vs. Zach McAllister (0-1, 3.00); 7:05 on YES, MLBN vs. Baltimore Orioles (3-4) at Yankee Stadium Fri.- CC Sabathia (1-1, 3.00) vs. Miguel Gonzalez (1-0, 2.84); 7:05 on MY9 Sat.- Hiroki Kuroda (1-1, 6.75) vs. Jason Hammel (1-1, 4.97); 4:05 on FOX Sun.- Andy Pettitte (2-0, 1.20) vs. Wei-Yin Chen (0-1, 3.75); 8:05 on ESPN A.L. Good. I've been to two Scranton/Wilkes Barre games this season. Their bullpen would struggle at A-ball the way they've been pitching. This might make it worthwhile staying past seven innings.
Another rainout in Cleveland yesterday. Joe Girardi says the most likely date for a makeup seems to be May 13, when both teams are off and could play a doubleheader. Yanks will stay in rotation and bump Hughes. CC goes tonight. vs. Baltimore Orioles (5-4) at Yankee Stadium Fri.- CC Sabathia (1-1, 3.00) vs. Miguel Gonzalez (1-0, 2.84); 7:05 on MY9 Sat.- Hiroki Kuroda (1-1, 6.75) vs. Jason Hammel (1-1, 4.97); 4:05 on FOX Sun.- Andy Pettitte (2-0, 1.20) vs. Wei-Yin Chen (0-1, 3.75); 8:05 on ESPN A.L. CC, Mariano, a 3-run outfield error and a triple play give the Yanks 4 in a row and put them over .500 for the first time. Eduardo Nunez got hit by a pitch again and has a bruised right wrist. Why him? I guess with Teixeira out of the lineup somebody else has to be a substitute to get regularly drilled. Andy Pettitte is suffering back spasms and has been scratched from Sunday's start. Kuroda gets moved from Saturday to Sunday and Hughes will go today. Yankees and Indians to play an old-fashioned doubleheader in Cleveland on May 13 to make up for this past week's rainouts. vs. Baltimore Orioles (5-5) at Yankee Stadium Yankees 5, Orioles 2 Sat.- Phil Hughes (0-1, 6.75) vs. Jason Hammel (1-1, 4.97); 4:05 on FOX Sun.- Hiroki Kuroda (1-1, 6.75) vs. Wei-Yin Chen (0-1, 3.75); 8:05 on ESPN A.L. After Phil Hughes got smacked around Saturday -- giving up 9 hits, 3 HRs, 5 runs in 3 innings and getting roundly booed off the mound -- the Yankee pitching settled into a real groove over the weekend. The bullpen (Phelps, Chamberlain, Robertson) came in to throw 6 scoreless innings for the rest of that game, followed by Hiroki Kuroda's 5-hit shutout gem yesterday. Andy Pettitte is fine and will start Friday against Toronto. vs. Baltimore Orioles (6-6) at Yankee Stadium Yankees 5, Orioles 2 Orioles 5, Yankees 3 Yankees 3, Orioles 0 Mon.- off vs. Arizona Diamondbacks (8-4) at Yankee Stadium Tue.- Ivan Nova (0-1, 7.71) vs. Brandon McCarthy (0-1, 7.71); 7:05 on YES, MLBN Wed.- CC Sabathia (2-1, 2.25) vs. Wade Miley (2-0, 2.13); 7:05 on MY9 Thu.- Phil Hughes (0-2, 10.29) vs. Patrick Corbin (2-0, 1.50); 7:05 on YES A.L. Yanks win last night, no thanks to Ivan Nova -- 5 innings, 2 runs, 7 hits, 2 walks. The bullpen (Logan, Joba, Robertson, Mariano) did the job again, shutting down Arizona. A 3-run homer from Cano. Yankees have won 6 of 7 since starting the season 1-4. vs. Arizona Diamondbacks (8-4) at Yankee Stadium Yankees 4, Diamondbacks 2 Wed.- CC Sabathia (2-1, 2.25) vs. Wade Miley (2-0, 2.13); 7:05 on MY9 Thu.- Phil Hughes (0-2, 10.29) vs. Patrick Corbin (2-0, 1.50); 7:05 on YES vs. Toronto Blue Jays (6-8) at Rogers Centre Fri.- Andy Pettitte (2-0, 1.20) vs. Brandon Morrow (0-1, 4.60); 7:07 on YES Sat.- Hiroki Kuroda (2-1, 2.87) vs. Mark Buehrle (1-0, 7.31); 1:07 on YES Sun.- Ivan Nova (1-1, 5.59) vs. Josh Johnson (0-1, 6.91); 1:07 on YES A.L. Nice come-from-behind victory last night, capped by Travis Hafner's pinch-hit home run in the 8th inning. 7 wins out of the last 8 games. Derek Jeter has a small crack in his "surgically repaired" left ankle. He'll be gone until sometime after the All-Star break. So Eduardo Nunez can relax and play short without looking over his shoulder for the next 3 months. I've wanted to see that guy in extended action. vs. Arizona Diamondbacks (9-6) at Yankee Stadium Yankees 4, Diamondbacks 2 Yankees 4, Diamondbacks 3 Diamondbacks 6, Yankees 2 (12 inns.) vs. Toronto Blue Jays (7-9) at Rogers Centre Fri.- Andy Pettitte (2-0, 1.20) vs. Brandon Morrow (0-1, 4.60); 7:07 on YES Sat.- Hiroki Kuroda (2-1, 2.87) vs. Mark Buehrle (1-0, 7.31); 1:07 on YES Sun.- Ivan Nova (1-1, 5.59) vs. Josh Johnson (0-1, 6.91); 1:07 on YES A.L. I'd bet on winning 100 games. I think it's (somewhat) more likely than not. Yes, a couple of injuries could screw things up, but I believe we've got the best team in baseball
The Yankees, who were said to have no power this year, lead the A.L. in homers with 27 and slugging percentage (.467). Cano, Hafner and Wells each have 5 home runs. Chien-Ming Wang's Friday night start was rained out, so he went Saturday afternoon instead. Wang went 5 1/3 scoreless innings for the win -- allowing 6 hits, no walks, 3 strikeouts, and 9 ground-ball outs. Wang Pitches Well, but SWB Railriders Fall MOOSIC - Sometimes in baseball, nothing goes right, even when everything is going right. As he walked off the mound in the seventh inning to a stirring ovation from the PNC Field crowd, that paradox had to occur to Chien-Ming Wang. After all, he had hardly been touched in his 6+ innings Thursday night. He had not yet allowed an earned run as he approached the dugout. The pitcher whose teammates shook his hand in congratulations left in trouble created by a two-out, opposite-field single and a shattered-bat double. The stat line says the veteran right-hander's outing was the worst in his second go-round in the Yankees organization. He knew otherwise, though. Wang allowed just one earned run, but a big error and an offense that couldn't get anything going in the clutch doomed him and the RailRiders to a 4-1 loss to Columbus.
