The Long Island Academy was shut out by the New York Athletic Club, 3-0, on humid Travers Island Sunday.

The Academy went down 1-0 but had a Tyler Arnone penalty kick to equalize that was saved. The score was 1-0 at the half.

Academy coach Adrian Gaitan of Oceanside started the match and he substituted himself in the second half, after which NYAC put away two more goals for the 3-0 score.

The possession was 50-50 but NYAC put it chances past Academy keeper Brandon Lafferty and Long Island did not score on its chances.

NYAC improved to 2-2-3 on the season while the Academy dropped to 1-5-0.

The Academy is having a challenging season and needs to put together a winning streak to avoid its first losing season. The team went 5-3-3 in 2007 and8-1-2 in 2008 while winning the Mid-Atlantic Division championship. The 2009 season saw the squad go 4-1-3.

The Brooklyn Italians won a pair of games over the weekend to improve their NPSL record to 6-1-0. On Saturday they came from behind for a 2-1 win over the New Hampshire Mountaineers. On Sunday, after trailing 1-0 to the Boston Tea Men, they scored four unanswered goals for a 4-2 win.

Saturday, the Mountaineers (2-2-5) Trevor Prophet scored in the last minute of the first half for the 1-0 lead.

Brooklyn came back on a 75th minute goal by Vincenzo Conigliaro. The game winner came in the 89th minute as Paul Nittoli set up Mark Hamilton.

Brooklyn outshot the Mountaineers 11-6, forcing New Hampshire goalkeeper Chris Devine to maked three saves. Brooklyn goalkeeper Rosario Candela did not have to make any saves.

In Sunday’s contest, Rome Zego gave the Tea Men the early lead, but Brooklyn got a 21st minute equalizer from Paul Nittoli, his first of two goals.

Marko Hamilton put the Italians ahead in the 51st minute and Nittoli added his second in the 64th. A penalty kick by Douglas Madas closed out the visitors scoring in the 73rd minute.

Paul D’Angelo scored for the Tea Men on a penalty kick in the 75th minute.

Brooklyn had a 19-9 shots advantage, forcing Tea Men goalkeeper Taylor Bracken to make five saves, Brooklyn’s Rosario Candela only had to make one save.

Italians stop Boston on road, 4-2

Brooklyn, N.Y. - The Brooklyn Italians concluded their New England road trip Sunday night with a 4-2 victory over the last-place Boston Tea Men in Andover, Massachusetts.

Italians strikers Paul Nittoli and Marco Hamilton led their club back from a 1-0 deficit with stellar play up front. The win moves the Brooklyn club to second place with a game in hand in the National Premier Soccer League standings with a 6-0-1 record worth 19 points.

The day prior, Brooklyn took on a tough New Hampshire side who pressured the Italians to the last second. Brooklyn once again went down a goal after a beautiful free kick by a Mountaineer player in the first half. But Italians midfielder Vincenzo Conigliaro matched the effort with an effort of his own (from the exact same spot), after coming off the bench in the second half. "It was a GOALASO!" said Conigliaro when asked what he thought about the strike.

On 84 minutes Paul Nittoli slid a clever pass to Marco Hamilton running into the box. Hamilton wasn't closed down by the Mountaineers defenders and was able to fire a shot on goal which proved to be the game winner.

"I'm just so proud of the players for putting in that performance this weekend," said Brooklyn Italians coach Sammy Daoud after the win. "To get six points on the road against very tough competition - their commitment tonight was just phenomenal."

With five changes from the starting lineup that took the field in Harrisburg PA for the US Open Cup days earlier, Brooklyn adopted on a more attack-minded look, but it was the opposition who kept scoring the first effort on goal. "We went down early in both games, but we showed that we can come from behind on the road. That is the mark of a championship team," Daoud added.

Brooklyn's Emerson Sykes came on as a defensive substitute just after his side took the lead and, with almost his first run, had a golden opportunity to save a snap shot from close range. His tackle proved vital as the effort landed in the arms of Italians keeper Rosario Candela. Sykes, the hometown favorite, earned a starting role in the city of Andover when Brooklyn faced Boston Tea Men. With fans in the audience, Emerson didn't disappoint. Sykes was able to slow down the quick Tea Men midfielders ensuring his team a victory.

General manager Shomari Ramsay discussed his thoughts on his teams tough road trip. "We've played a lot of games in a very short period of time - four in nine days - and travelled hundreds of miles. So for the boys to come out and do what they did this weekend, I can't say it enough - I'm just really proud of them."

Brooklyn is set to face the NY Pancyprians Sunday, in the Lamar Hunt/U.S. Open Cup final (amateur round) in Pennsylvania.

Do you have any idea where the Fire is playing? I'm guessing at the practise field where the PDL team plays. I'll also try the team contact. So did you get to see them play Madison? Have been wondering what's the make up of that team. It looks like they have some players from some local smaller schools as combared to the PDL team.

I was told that the Fire's PDL and NPSL teams are drawn from one large player pool -- mix and match. Sometimes when the PDL team is at home, they have a stronger roster.

So the "Northwest" is gearing up for playoffs., Question that I cant find the answer to: Are Northwest playoffs aggregated, or is it just one match per round at the higher seed?

from Chattanooga Football Club Media Relations

"For the second year in a row, Chattanooga Football Club has its highest NPSL attendance on the Fourth of July. Over 3400 fans poured into Finley Stadium Sunday night to watch Chattanooga FC take home their fourth victory of the season by a score of 5-0.

The atmosphere was electric from the beginning with the ever-growing group of “Chattahooligans” singing and waving blue flags as they entered the stadium. Ernie Dempsey, an enthusiastic supporter of the club, leads many of the chants and songs with his passionate drum beating throughout the match. “This was a wonderful game to be a part of tonight,” said Dempsey after the game. “The team played so well and we can’t wait for next weekend when we’re all caravanning down to Birmingham for the game against Pumas.”

Coming into the match, FC Tulsa (1-2-1) was in third place in the Southeastern Conference. From the start of the game, Chattanooga FC (4-0-2), currently in control of the conference, tested the Tulsa backs and goalie often. “Our game plan was to come out of the gates and have our forwards and midfielders put heavy defensive pressure on their midfield,” said Head Coach Brian Crossman. “Tulsa was coming off of a tough match the previous night with Rocket City and we wanted to wear them down early.”

Consistent pressure on the Tulsa goal led to a corner kick in the ninth minute. A weak clearance from a Tulsa defender floated the ball about eight yards from the net and Andy Stewart, one of Chattanooga’s central defenders, turned his back to the goal and acrobatically bicycle kicked the ball into the upper corner of the net.

Stewart said that it was just a natural reaction. “I’ve never done anything like that before, but the ball went over my head, and the only way to reach it was a bicycle kick. Thankfully I hit it well.”

In the 18th minute, Dalton native Luis Salazar found some space and crossed the ball to Chattanooga FC newcomer Chris Ochieng who tucked it nicely inside the left post.

Chattanooga continued to have good scoring chances the rest of the first half, only to be denied by their finishing touch. The first half ended with a score of 2-0.

The score remained 2-0 until the 60th minute when Chattanooga native Drew Courtney made an ambitious run down the left side of the field and found his way into the box. Courtney got off a good shot only to be denied by the Tulsa keeper, but the rebound came right back to his feet and he did not miss again.

Chattanooga FC wrapped up the scoring for the night with two goals in rapid succession. In the 79th minute, Moises Drumond’s first touch of the game found Irvin Espinal in space who blasted a rocket past the outstretched hand of the Tulsa keeper. In the 85th minute, defender Joshua Scott hit a low cross into the middle of the field and was picked up by Robbie Hill who put the ball away easily for the fifth goal.

“Overall, we were really pleased with our play,” said Fynn Glover, a Chattanooga FC midfielder. “We really needed a win like this to help boost our confidence. We’ve been playing well lately, but just haven’t been able to score. This gives us some good momentum heading into a huge game next weekend against Pumas.”

Chattanooga FC’s next match is on Saturday July 10th in Birmingham against Pumas FC. The next home game is on July 17th at Finley Stadium against Rocket City United.

New York Red Bulls Academy U23 1, Brooklyn Italians 0
New York Red Bulls Media Relations
    July 2, 2010-8:02 a.m. EST

NEWARK, N.J.—Kadeem Dacres scored from close range to finish a run down the middle in the 57th minute, lifting the New York Red Bulls Academy U23 team to a hard-fought 1-0 win over the visiting Brooklyn Italians in a National Premier Soccer League matchup Thursday night at Lubetkin Field on the campus of New Jersey Institute of Technology.

Dacres, who was dangerous throughout, came up with the ball outside the penalty area and pushed it straight ahead before firing the ball into the net, unassisted, on the sprint from a few yards out for the only scoring of the evening.
“Kadeem was alert and picked (the ball) up and made a good play for us,” said Red Bulls coach Rob Elliott. “He was good all night.”

The result left the Northeast-Atlantic Conference-leading Red Bulls with 28 points on a record of nine wins and one tie in 10 matches. The Brooklyn Italians, second in the Northeast-Atlantic Conference, have 19 points on six wins, a tie and a loss in eight starts.
The Red Bulls enjoyed a decided advantage in overall shots, 15-7, and Brooklyn Italians goalkeeper Rosario Candela made eight saves, while Red Bulls keeper Michael O’Keeffe notched one save in registering the shutout.

After a relatively slow start, the Red Bulls began to earn opportunities midway through the first half and were barely denied when a shot from Mario Rios rattled off the crossbar in the 20th minute.

Matt Bouraee of the Red Bulls was thwarted twice within a span of four minutes on quality saves by Candela. The first came in the 29th minute and the second in the 32nd minute, when Bouraee’s sliding attempt to finish a great run by Rios was turned away again by Candela. Rios made a steal just inside the midfield stripe and made a 50-yard full-tilt run down the right wing before centering to Bouraee, whose shot was deflected by Candela on a play that earned applause on all ends.

With his team leading, 1-0, Bouraee had another sliding attempt from in front that went over the top in the 68th minute.

The game was highly competitive and the outcome remained in doubt until the final whistle as the teams fought through to the end.

“It was a good game, very good for our players to face them (the Brooklyn Italians),” said Elliott. “They’re a good team with some experienced players. We had to concentrate on keeping them from building their counter attacks and once we got the ball moving fast enough, we were able to get some chances. It was a good, honest game and a good experience for our players.”
New York Red Bulls Academy U23 will be back in action with another NPSL match vs. the Morris County Colonials on Tuesday, July 6 at 6:30 pm at Lubetkin Field on the NJIT campus in Newark, NJ

sorry I've been away all season from the forum, not being the commish of the NE this year I've been out of the day to day stuff in the league and just concentrating on bringing new groups in.

We've got a whole lot of new groups coming in this upcoming season and are having fun. The NPSL Final Four info will be posted shortly, it's a 3 day event and should be a fun time. It's in Madison, Alabama this year (yes it was Madison, Wisconsin last year), so don't get confused!!!

More will be posted by Ryan about it as the time approaches. The Northeast Keystone Conference is down to FC Sonic (formerly Penn Stoners who were National Champs in '08 vs. Erie Admirals who are the National Finalist and defending NE Regional Champs in '09). They play one another on Friday at Sonic's stadium.

So the winner of that match looks to move onto play NYRB's U23 team for the NE Regional Crown.

Actually, the NPSL Final Four details have been out for a while. Rocket City United will be hosting this year's event in Madison, AL as part of an annual soccer festival they are calling Soccer Wars. Yep, it's pretty cheesy, but Huntsville-Madison is a big center for aerospace with NASA and the Missile Defense Agency in town. Thus, the sci-fi theme. :p

    Thursday, July 28: Semi-finals
Friday, July 29: All-star and 3rd Place matches
    Saturday, July 30: NPSL Final

In addition, there will be a player combine with scouts from various colleges and professional leagues attending, and there will be adult and youth small sided tournaments for weekend warriors.

    Here's more info.
