I almost started this last year, but it's about time we do it now. A new thread for general baseball news, commentary, etc. Items and opinions that don't require individual threads.

    First up...

Global World Series a Possibility - ESPN

Between this and the WBC, I guess the season is never supposed to end.

The travel would be hell. It would have to be a 2-3-2 series.

The global world series is a stupid idea.

I really do not think this is a good idea. WBC is enough as it is.

What's so bad about the WBC? It was about time Baseball had a real World Championship with MLB involvement.

I'm not a fan of the WBC because of the effect on pitchers. Too much wear and tear. Fans in the US don't really care who wins anyway.

I like the WBC, however I dont see the need to have the World Series winner play the Japanese winner.

Mark McGwire finally admitted he used steroids back in the 90's, including '98.

    Shocker.

Now we just need Jeter, Pujols, and Griffey Jr. to come clean :p

He's doing this to improve his chances of getting voted into the Hall of Fame.

I think he got 24% this year, I highly doubt that will jump up by 51 points to get into the HOF anytime soon. The real reason he admitted it was probably the Cardinals wanted him to come clean in January so there wouldnt be the big media circus questioning him about whether he did steroids or not at spring training.

McGwire says he didn't take supplements to improve his power. It was just to help his health and to recover from the wear and tear on his body. He has no clue that that's an inherent advantage over those that don't use PEDs.

So he was a cheat and he's dumb too.

    A shortstop with a lifetime .313 and 229 homeruns?

He's the lesser athlete of the couple, but if Kansas City had one that good just starting out, you'd figure them to finish second instead of last this year and contend in a couple of years...

"Acrobatic" defense in the article might have been better expressed as "adventurous" though. Came out of the minors too fast to get his footwork sorted out first, and never really did.

I'm a bit conflicted on this. He stood up and held himself accountable and was ready to resign, but the Rangers FO felt he was sincere enough and gave him a second chance. However, what kind of message does this send? Will players start thinking that they can test positive for a rec drug and get away with it? And if they don't, won't they use Washington as an excuse as to why they should get away with it?

I'm not suggesting that I think every MLB player is going to start using drugs, but not taking any sort of discipline, even a suspension, might not be a good thing.

I'm a bit surprised MLB isn't taking their own action and doing something about this.

Also, I find it a bit hard to believe that a 57 yr old man tried it that one and only time. I mean, seriously, what reason would he have to start then if he hasn't before?

I don't know, whatever happens, I really hope that this is the last we hear of this.

Yeah, the impression of a double standard really rubs me the wrong way.

Major League Baseball ruined two hall of fame careers (Gooden and Strawberry) for it's recreational drug witch hunt yet it continues to be weak when it comes to drugs that effect play on the field.

No one should care what Ron Washington does in his spare time. The only thing they should worry about is him leading the Rangers to their usual first half of promise followed by their typical second half dreadful collapse
