    TFCA U16's are heading to the MLS Youth Cup in Denver;

    http://toronto.fc.mlsnet.com/news/te....jsp&team=t280

Toronto FC Academy's Junior Team left for Denver early Friday to take part in the 2009 MLS Youth Cup. The Reds' youngsters open the tournament against Real Salt Lake on Saturday and will then face Columbus Crew on Sunday and Colorado Rapids on Monday in group play.

Toronto return to the tournament for the second year. In 2008 they won all three of the group games to qualify for the semifinals where they were beaten 2-0 by Real Salt Lake.

TFC Academy MLS Youth Cup roster:

    26 Dino Gardner - D/M
    27 Zak-l Pera - D
    28 Mackenzie Kim - M
    29 Cedric Wong - D
30 Angelo Carmelo Cavallusso - GK
    31 Jon-Michael Viera - M
    32 Matias Naalband - F
    33 Andrew Manuel Serediuk -F
    34 Jonathan Almeida - M
    35 Aaron Michael Schneebeli - D
    36 Paramvir Sekhon - D
    37 Jordan Murrell - D
    38 Damir Rosic - F
    39 Christian Rodriguez - F
40 Justin Daniel Jorge Silveira - GK
    41 Oscar Cordon - M
    42 Vincenzo Sasso - D
    44 Doneil Henry - D
    45 Eric Ngo - M
    46 Arthur Craig Casupanan - M
    48 Keith Makubuya - M/F
    49 Prasenna Kirupakaran M/F
    50 Garrett Cyprus - GK

Compared to the roster a few posts up this is clearly identical. TFC are sending a strictly U16 squad to this tournament.

Chicago just threw something together. The real U16 is resting for the DA finals next week. I guess FCD went another route.

" The Fire Juniors will be merging their resources by bringing together Fire Juniors teams from Illinois, Mississippi, and Louisiana to represent the Chicago Fire in the 2009 MLS/SUM U-17 Cup to be played at the Dick's Sporting Goods Park on July 3rd through 8th. "

Really sucks that MLSnet.com isn't covering the competition this year. They haven't issued news releases or updated the web site. I rather enjoyed looking at the video and photos they posted last year.

    Re: Today's Results...

If those PK wins count as 3 points, the standings are:

    Houston 6
    Dallas 6
    TFC 3
    LA 3
    Fire 3
    DC 3
    RSL 3
    Crew 3
    KCW 0
    Colorado 0

If they count as draws and the PKS are only for a tiebreaker or something

    Dallas 6
    Houston 4
    LA 4
    DC 4
    RSL 4
    TFC 3
    Fire 3
    Crew 3
    KCW 0
    Colorado 0

Really is a shame the league hasn't covered this better. Even if it isn't everyone's "A" team, it's still a nice tradition.

    Re: Today's Results...

    Tie breakers are:
    1. Goal Differential
    2. Most goals scored
    3. Least goals allowed
    4. Fewest Yellow/Red card points (3 points for Red Card, 1 point for Yellow Card )
    5. Coin toss (two teams) or drawing (more than two teams)

Not sure how they count a 1-1 (regulation) draw in the prelims to the GD, GF & GA results. I would assume though that if they go into PKs that the winning team is awarded the full 3 points.

So after a quick tally of the results from Sat and Sun., here is how I figure things stand...

Rank Team Pts GD GF GA
    1 FC Dallas 6 5 8 3
    2 Houston Dynamo 6 2 3 1
    3 Columbus Crew 3 3 7 4
    4 Real Salt Lake 3 1 4 3
    5 DC United 3 1 2 1
    6 Toronto FC 3 0 5 5
    7 LA Galaxy 3 -1 2 3
    8 Chicago Fire 3 -3 5 8
    9 Colorado Rapids 0 -2 3 5
    10 KC Wizards 0 -6 2 8

    Tuesday Results & Standings?

    Tue., July 7th, 2009:
9:30 AM - Houston Dynamo (1) vs. (2) Columbus Crew
9:30 AM - LA Galaxy (5) vs. (4) Chicago Fire
    11:30 AM - Real Salt Lake (1 - 5) vs. (1 - 3) FC Dallas - (PKs)
11:30 AM - KC Wizards (0) vs. (1) DC United
5:15 PM - Colorado Rapids (2) vs. (1) Toronto FC

Based on points (3 awarded per win including win by penalties), goal differential, goals for, goals against as per the posted tie breakers, I would expect the final round-robin standings to be such:

Rank Team Pts GD GF GA
    1 FC Dallas 6 5 9 4
    2 Columbus Crew 6 4 9 5
    3 DC United 6 2 3 1
    4 Real Salt Lake 6 1 5 4
    5 Houston Dynamo 6 1 4 3
    6 LA Galaxy 6 0 7 7
    7 Toronto FC 3 -1 6 7
    8 Colorado Rapids 3 -1 5 6
    9 Chicago Fire 3 -4 9 13
    10 KC Wizards 0 -7 2 9

Therefore, the last games should match-up like:
    Championship = FCD vs. CLB
    Bronze = DCU vs. RSL
Cons 3 = HOU vs. LAG
Cons 2 = TFC vs. COL
Cons 1 = CHI vs. KCW

Guess we'll see for sure tomorrow!

    Cheers all!!!

The SUM U17 Cup has come to an end and DC United are champions once again. Here are the details from today’s final round.

    http://rapidsundercurrent.blogspot.com/2009/07/2009-sum-u17-cup-is-underway.html

Kansas City Wizards 5-1 Colorado Rapids: The first half of this game was played very evenly. Both sides had stretches where they looked like the better team. In the last minute of the first half, the Wizards broke through as an unmarked Derek Schrick headed a free kick passed Rapid’s keeper Matt Kagie. After the half, Kansas City picked up right where they left off. In the 43rd minute William Witherspoon scored, followed by a Jordan Zarse goal in the 50th. Rapids forward Luke Chapman scored his third goal of the tournament in the 63rd to bring the deficit back down to two. But the Wizards were too much for Colorado on this day. Goals by Michael Oakley in the 66th and Lucas Throckmorton in the 76th sealed the deal and gave the Wizards their first win of the tournament.

Toronto FC 1-2 Chicago Fire: After a disappointing loss last night, Toronto looked to be out for redemption in the early going. Oscar Cordon scored in jus the 3rd minute and gave Toronto an early 1-0 lead. Just after the half Chicago was able to tie things up, which made for a very exciting finish. With the game still tied in stoppage time, Chicago found a game winning goal in the final moments from Peter Beasley.

Houston Dynamo 2-1 LA Galaxy: Houston scored the first two goals of the match and never looked back. In the 30th minute, Jade George found the net, and just after halftime in the 41st, Irvinn Ramirez made his mark on the score sheet. But LA wasn’t going to give up. Jesus Rochin was able to score and bring the game back to a one goal deficit. LA was unable to find the equalizer and the Dynamo held on for victory.

Real Salt Lake 1-0 Columbus Crew: The third place game was very intriguing to cover. Last years champions, Real Salt Lake, took on the surprise team of the tournament, the Columbus Crew. At the first half whistle we had seen a very even match, neither team scoring a goal, but that didn’t last too long in the second half. Donny Toia scored the games only goal in the 48th minute as Real Salt Lake took home third place.

DC United 1-1 FC Dallas (DC wins on penalties 6-5): DC took place in yet another memorable final. In the three year history of the SUM U17 Cup, DC United has appeared in all three finals. They won the event two years ago but lost last season in penalty kicks. This season they were able to win on penalties. DC United led for the majority of the game after Luiz Cartagena scored in the 15th minute. That lead held right up until the final moments of regulation. In the 78th minute, Jonathan Top equalized and sent the game into two 10 minute overtime periods. After a scoreless overtime, penalties were necessary to decide a champion. In the seventh round, a costly miss by FC Dallas opened the door for a DC championship. Joel Condor sent the final kick into the back of the net and DC we’re crowned champions.
