Despite being a music junkie, I do a pretty miserable job of keeping up with new music as it's released unless it's a band I already love. I'm more attuned to clubs' concert calendars as a way of discovering new stuff, so I figured a thread for releases for the current year might be a good idea to help keep each other informed. If you can provide a YouTube or link to some audio, that'd be awesome too. This is the first album I've picked up this year: You can currently stream the whole album on last.fm: 200 Million Thousand
I bought this and have to say I'm yet to be completely whelmed, either over or under. This is a very good song off it, though... [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lJYAsuVQry0"]YouTube - La Llorona by Beirut[/ame] Fingers crossed for the M. Ward and Neko Case...
...and the thread instantly bears fruit for me. I didn't know Beirut had a new disc out, yet I have everything else they've put out. Don't know much about M. Ward, but I LOVE Neko Case. I have high hopes for the new one as well. I'm sure I'm in the minority here, but I felt like Fox Confessor Brings the Flood was quite a step down from Blacklisted. I loved the EP and the live album she's since put out, but was a bit disappointed by the last full length. Regardless, I'm going to see her live in April. Speaking of which, I need to get those tickets...
And if you're not a sissy: Red Fang's debut full-length comes out in March. But you guys are sissies.
I've only heard one song by them ("Prehistoric Dog"), but I really liked it. I will have to add that one to my list of stuff to check out in the next couple of weeks.
Mastodon just announced a show here today! I cannot friggin' wait. It's going to sell out in about four seconds as the place they're playing is tiny.
They're also playing Scion Rockfest down South with a shitload of other great acts but I can't make it down there. I'm really hoping they start their Crack the Skye tour in the U.S. because I've not yet had the chance to go see them. And you're right, 'Oblivion' rocks. I can't wait for the album, the overall theme of time travel, Czarist Russia, and inter-dimensional existentialism is a mind********, is a totally fantastic way.
I have tickets to Scion Rockfest, but I don't think I'm going to be able to go because of something that's come up last minute. Yeah, the tour appears to be kicking off in the U.S. All of the summer dates are European and the Birmingham date they announced is for April. I suppose that could be a one off given our proximity to Atlanta, but I doubt it.
No one picked up the Animal Collective album? It's been pretty much universally praised. I enjoyed it but I liked Strawberry Jam better. I also got the Black Lips record and the new DJ Rupture/Andy Moor record. Both are good as well. I'm looking forward to the new Mastodon and Clipse albums.
It's their most pop oriented album (as pop as they can be), but it's still really good. I'd have to rank Feels as my favorite, but Merriweather Post Pavilion is a close second.
Here's the blurb I wrote about the new M. Ward for the local paper: Lusher, cleaner and more orchestrated than any of his previous works, Ward's latest album seems the next logical step in his progression from croaky-voiced wandering troubadour to croaky-voiced NPR god. That's not an indictment - with the exception of a HORRIBLE collaboration with Lucinda Williams midway through, Hold Time stands up with the best of M.'s Americana catalogue. ...seriously, the entire album is as solid as you could expect other than that Lucinda Williams track. It's 6 solid minutes of soporific pain.
This is probably my favorite site for discovering newly released music: http://www.spinner.com/new-releases They've got full albums on for free streaming. That Black Lips record is currently on rotation, along with this gem: P.S. Son Volt is coming out with a new album in May or June. I heard them play 4 of the new songs live Friday night in OK City.
I think this came out in Africa and Europe in 2008, but it has a 2009 release date for North America, so I'm going to include it here anyway. Rokia Traoré is a singer/guitarist from Mali. There's some other songs I like on the album better, but this is the single and the only new song I could easily find on YouTube... Dudes. Dudettes. They've got a cornucopia on today. New albums by Neko Case, Phish, Bela Fleck, Buddy and Julie Miller... Holy crap, too bad I'm not rich today.
