Re: 2007 CONCACAF Champions Cup (MLS Edition) Anybody know if away goals are in effect for this tournament?
Re: 2007 CONCACAF Champions Cup (MLS Edition) I heard that they are not. only for the Final I believe.
Re: 2007 CONCACAF Champions Cup (MLS Edition) In Mexico City, you are always at a disadvantage it seems
Re: 2007 CONCACAF Champions Cup (MLS Edition) out of both MLS teams i think DC United will go further.
Re: 2007 CONCACAF Champions Cup (MLS Edition) This tournament, despite its lack of notoriety in the middle of a cold American winter, is, in my opinion, one of the most exciting events of the calendar year. In a way, it is a barometer to measure the level of improvement in MLS. Two years ago when UNAM whacked DC, many of us felt sad that MLS was so far behind the Mexican league in quality. Only a month later, that same UNAM team whacked Argentina's Velez Sarsfield by a similar score which made many of us feel better realizing that the Mexico City altitude was a greater issue than quality of play. On a more positive note, I remember a few years ago when the Kansas City Wizards had Saprissa on the brink of defeat before an incredible stoppage-time comeback. Saprissa, if memory serves me, went on to win the title that year. The conclusion that I drew then was that this tournament, in its knockout format, is determined by a matter of inches. Despite that, MLS teams will always be at a disadvantage under the current format. Fortunately, the Concacaf website last fall indicated that this tournament will expand in size and establish a Champions' League group stage format by 2009. I live for the day when I can see a MLS club, preferably the Columbus Crew, playing for the championship of North America and a berth in the FIFA World Club Championship. Maybe Concacaf could even consider a deal with Conmebol where the top teams in their tournament qualify for the next year's Copa Liberatores and Copa Sudamericana. Finally, I really hope that both MLS clubs in this year's event can win their first round, as a showdown with the top two clubs in Mexico in the semifinals would be an historic occasion for the league.
Re: 2007 CONCACAF Champions Cup (MLS Edition) The CCC and Superliga and Interliga will eventually need to merge.....
Re: 2007 CONCACAF Champions Cup (MLS Edition) why? they are different competitions for different reasons. Interliga is for Mexico only and for the Libertadores. CCC is home and away and controlled by CONCACAF SuperLiga is a SUM/MLS/FMF tournament which has little interest in the Joe publics of the region. They can co-exist.
Re: 2007 CONCACAF Champions Cup (MLS Edition) They can.. But clubs won't be fielding their best teams for all of them. A super tournament clearly would not have this problem.
Re: 2007 CONCACAF Champions Cup (MLS Edition) Mexico isnt giving up its Copa Libertadores sports so the Interliga will remain as mexican only competition. And I think its a given the CCC and Superliga will merge once concacaf gets its act together.
Re: 2007 CONCACAF Champions Cup (MLS Edition) I can definatly see Interliga and Superliga merging as the Superliga becomes the main vehicle of qualification for Copa Libertadores. That makes sense to me. The CCC is a CONCACAF event and i think they wouldnt want to award spots into antoher feds club competition by virtue of winnin gtheir title. However, it is plausable if the price is right.
Re: 2007 CONCACAF Champions Cup (MLS Edition) What was the name of the Costa Rican side that f**ked up Donovan last year?
Re: 2007 CONCACAF Champions Cup (MLS Edition) Would that be the cooks of the local Hilton resort Just reaching for straws here.
Re: 2007 CONCACAF Champions Cup (MLS Edition) I agree, Superliga and Interliga should be merged. If that happens however, the stakes get raised even further and then the CCC becomes even more insignificant in the minds of MLS and FMF teams. Anyway, I think that if any MLS team advances out of the first round, it'll be Houston.
Re: 2007 CONCACAF Champions Cup (MLS Edition) Saprissa, but they didn't exactly ******** LA up, the game was tied 2-2 after regulation and Saprissa won it in extra time.
Re: 2007 CONCACAF Champions Cup (MLS Edition) It dosent make sense to Mexico and its 3 teams that get to play in the Copa Libertadores every year. Could you Imagine being New England and having to fly all the way down Buenos Aires or Santiago. Looking at map rough guess would be thats like flying to Berlin to play a midweek game
Re: 2007 CONCACAF Champions Cup (MLS Edition) You mean like how D.C. flew down to Santiago for a midweek game?
Re: 2007 CONCACAF Champions Cup (MLS Edition) For me, this is the most important competition an MLS team can be in. I would trade multiple MLS Cups for the Galaxy to get another one of these. We do know the score. Here's how it works with the whole first round-pre-season thing. If an MLS club gets past the first round, its chances of winning it all rise exponentially because it buys itself more time to get into season shape. An MLS club may not beat Pumas, America, Saprissa, Alajualense, etc. even if in top form, of course, but more time gives it a fighting chance. Hopefully we can find some streams for these games.
Re: 2007 CONCACAF Champions Cup (MLS Edition) but what will mexican teams get out of this??? they'll just risk loosing spots to MLS teams
Re: 2007 CONCACAF Champions Cup (MLS Edition) Edge goes to more experience in this tournament, I agree.
Re: 2007 CONCACAF Champions Cup (MLS Edition) Same team, same coach had beaten Real Madrid in Madrid, too.
Re: 2007 CONCACAF Champions Cup (MLS Edition) The CCC, Superliga, and Interliga should all be merged. They all essentially serve the same purpose in 1 way or another !
Re: 2007 CONCACAF Champions Cup (MLS Edition) Would it be Mexico's choice, though? Seems to me it'd be up to COMNEBOL, and I'm just guessing that a briefcase full of money could persuade them to change their qualification.
Re: 2007 CONCACAF Champions Cup (MLS Edition) Is it all up to CONMEBOL?? I taught the country involved also has some say. But i dont know i might be wrong. When we got Venezuela's or Bolivia's(i forgot wich one) spots, I think also the country that gave us the spots had to agree with giving the spots up. But also I think Mexico has a lot of say, we have increased TV ratings, and we're bringing a lot of money to the tourney. And when CONMEBOL made the rule that if 2 mexican teams make it to the semifinals the brackets will be changed so the mexican teams will have to play each other. Then the FMF, the media and the fans started complaining about this CONMEBOL quckly changed this because they knew they would loose money.
