Just thought I'd get this thread rolling this year... I haven't heard of any strictly between clubs in UEFA, but new NWSL side Louisville wants some of that UEFA action this August: https://www.nwslsoccer.com/news/article/international-womens-cup-to-launch-in-louisville The six "UWCL teams" they've invited (crests pictured on the event website) include three teams who aren't in the UWCL this season, two of which have never participated in a UWCL ever.... okay then. The format is a carbon copy of the first two Women's ICC tournaments, so it'll be interesting to see if the Women's ICC develops at all this summer too.
Thank you for using the sun icon Here's the 2021 soccerway friendly list, with games in France, Germany, Norway and Sweden: https://int.soccerway.com/international/world/club-friendlies-women/2021/club-friendlies-1/r61207/ Not much winter sun for the Norwegian teams this year, as in Bauser's post:
Not wrong link, it was scrubbed from the NWSL site. The event's own webpage is still up: https://internationalwomenscup.com/ Also, the exact same info from the NWSL news article is on a Louisville article: https://www.racingloufc.com/news_article/show/1141151
And here it is: Women's ICC looking to sue Louisville's IWC EXCLUSIVE: A source with knowledge of the situation told me that Relevent Sports Group is exploring legal options over alleged infringements of the structure and name of the Women’s ICC. https://t.co/CCnJTp4rbp— Bob Williams (@WilliamsBob75) January 19, 2021
A little surprisingly, some cross-border friendlies are going on: Two clubs competing in Europe's last 16 soon, SKN St Pölten and Sparta Prague played each other last Saturday (30 Jan). The current Austrian and Czech league leaders respectively, they're both undefeated this season, but it was Sparta who won this one with 3 goals after half-time, in a close match played in the dreaded "snowrain". St Pölten 2 - 3 Sparta - (Hamidovic 33', Zver 53' / Pochmanová 48', Bužková 57', Šubrtová 83') Match reports: SKN-Frauen.at / Sparta.cz The game also saw a debut for the Danish-born U.S.-schooled Icelandic footballer-basketballer Kristrún Rut Antonsdóttir, as a sub for St Pölten, her 7th club in 5 years. Not international enough! St Pölten have more practice games to come, but Sparta had to cancel their 2-match trip to Poland due to the tightening of pandemic restrictions. And two German v Swiss matches in southwest Germany in January - SC Sand beat FC Basel 3-0, and Freiburg beat the same opponents 3-0 with Erëleta Memeti's 2 goals at the Grimm Küchen Stadion (Grimm Kitchens Stadium?) https://www.scfreiburg.com/en/node/73952
Reviving this thread because news of the 2021 Women's ICC has leaked: https://www.si.com/soccer/2021/04/08/womens-icc-2021-portland-thorns-houston-dash-barcelona-lyon Only 4 teams again, but because pandemic, I guess that was maybe to be expected. The plan is for 6 teams next year and 8 teams in 2023. This will be the first year with two NWSL teams, as well as the first year without Man City or the Courage.
Actually, my understanding is this is not the ICC. That will be in Louisville. I guess we wait a little to see which is what.
Louisville tried to create its own International Women's Cup - to which Relevant Sports, the owners of the Women's International Champions Cup, threatened to sue. See several posts above! I mean, I guess they *could* have agreed to merge, but that seems highly unlikely to me.
Indeed two different competitions and two different set of UEFA teams: Yesterday, news broke here that Lyonnais & Barcelona will join Portland Thorns & Houston Dash in @iccwomen Aug 18-21 in Portland.Today we're hearing PSG & Bayern Munich are top candidates for Aug 18-21 women's event in Louisville with host Racing & Chicago Red Stars#nwsl— Steven Goff (@SoccerInsider) April 9, 2021 Again it is important to note that 18 and 21 August are the dates of the Round 1 of the UWCL qualifying Round where the third placed teams from France, Germany, Spain and England enter the competition. Just for information on the four teams expected to come: PSG are leaders in D1 Arkema 11 points ahead of third placed Bordeaux with 5 games to play. Lyon are second seven points ahead of Bordeaux with 6 games to play. Bordeaux with only four games to play. Barcelona are 13 points ahead of third placed Real Madrid and have four game sin hand as well. Bayern are 17 points ahead of third placed Hoffenheim with five games to go and have secured a top two finish. So those four teams will come in the UEFA WCL at group stage or second round and are free to tour the USA.
Louisville have now confirmed Bayern and PSG as the international participants to their tournament, which has now apparently been rebranded from "the International Women's Cup" to just "The Women's Cup".
Norio Sasaki - Omiya Ardiya Ventus boss - said yesterday in an interview with soccerking that: (...) we've been approached by a tournament where top European clubs gather. If circumstances permit, I would like to participate. Hmm...perhaps it's Veolia tournament? Last year edition had Lyon, Juventus, PSV Eindhoven and Montpellier.
As previously mentioned and now official WICC in Portland with the last two UEFA WCL winners. 18 August Barcelona v Lyon, Portland Thorns v Houston Dash 21 August 3rd place final and final. Barca winning the UWCL makes it even more attractive, shame they did not do Portland v Barca and Dash v Lyon in the semis.
