The NYC Media Might Have Cost Democrats the House (nymag.com) "And the midterm results provide fresh evidence for the media’s power to shape public perceptions about crime. In fact, there is some reason to believe that the New York City media’s outsize concern with crime might have cost Democrats the House. Specifically, there is evidence that voters who were exposed to city media outlets put a higher priority on crime than voters in areas with similar (or higher) crime rates but different news sources. This redounded to the GOP’s benefit in the Empire State, enabling the party to nearly run the table in competitive House races. Had New Yorkers voted more like their peers in neighboring Pennsylvania, Democrats might still boast full control of the federal government next year." "In interviews with the New York Times, suburban swing voters who’d backed the GOP in 2022 attributed their newfound support for Republicans to concerns about public safety. Critically, those concerns did not derive solely from direct experience of crime or Republican ads." "Whatever the cause, the midterm results suggest that exposure to New York’s media market had a profound influence on voting behavior. New Jersey’s Third Congressional District is split between the New York City– and Philadelphia-designated media markets encompassing broadcast television and radio. In Mercer and Burlington County — both of which reside in the Philly market — incumbent Democrat Andy Kim roughly equaled or exceeded President Biden’s margin in 2020. In Monmouth County, which lies in the NYC market, however, Kim underperformed Biden by seven points." Basically, this is an argument that the NYC media cost the Dems enough seats to flip the House. Conservative media bias.
Jeffries to be the first POC party leader: House Democrats elect Hakeem Jeffries as party leader, first Black lawmaker to lead a party in Congress https://t.co/DexG6TNH7B— The Washington Post (@washingtonpost) November 30, 2022
He’s a great stump speaker: Obama: Mr. Walker has been talking about issues that are of great importance to the people of Georgia like if it’s better to be a vampire or a werewolf.. This is a debate that I must confess I once had myself.. when I was 7 pic.twitter.com/TonaibyZ1u— Acyn (@Acyn) December 2, 2022 Another strong finish from Obama pic.twitter.com/EmA7ionmSN— Acyn (@Acyn) December 2, 2022
"I think Herschel Walker will probably go down as one of the worst Republican candidates in our party's history" says the GA GOP Lt. Gov. https://t.co/Owgp6yjWuX— Ronald Brownstein (@RonBrownstein) December 2, 2022
One of these days, he is going to have a time and a place and he'll make a monumental speech with that monumental quote.
I don't know about you guys but tell me if you pick up on this. With Obama, he has the cadence a pastor but if you watch Trump, he has more of a cadence of style of a stand-up comedian. Both of these are uniquely different from traditional politicians which is probably a key part of their individual popularity. Notwithstanding the substance and quality of the human being difference of the two.
Thing is, I can see Obama being a damned good pastor. Re: Trump's comedic cadence and style, I guess if you were going for "an incredibly stupid version of Don Rickles," I could see it. Trouble is, Trump is about as funny as a heart attack.
Alan Keyes, the guy Obama obliterated in 2004, is grateful. My guess is if the GOP had put someone worse than Keyes in that race, say. . . Herschel Walker, Obama would have won something like 88-12 instead of 75-25
And the corollary is that if Georgia Republicans had nominated Keyes, he probably would have won. The problem is that it's a fundamental law of American politics that, if there's a primary, the Republicans will always choose the worst possible candidate.
You're right here: Donald Trump makes Don Rickles look Dick Cavett. Donald Trump: if Don Rickles is too conceptual and high brow... for you... Vote for Trump.
Well....I just wasted a few minutes go my life trying to decipher this world salad. Misery loves company...Your turn, suckers. “They’re not because they know right now that the House will be even so they don’t want to understand what is happening right now. You get the House, you get the committees. You get all the committees even, they just stall things within there. So if we keep a check on Joe Biden, we just going to keep a check on him.” — Georgia U.S. Senate candidate Herschel Walker (R), in an interview with Politico, arguing he hasn’t seen any lack of enthusiasm from voters.
I was thinking that Trump has the bitterness of Rickles, the darkness of Louis Black, and when reading off the teleprompter the deadpan of Steven Wright. Only without any real humor.
Good point. Deadtigers would get to a keyboard and make a reasonable amount of sense. Not sure a keyboard would help the Republican candidate from Georgia

Just back from a listening session with state Democrat Party leadership (Wikler, etc). It ran about an hour+ longer than advertised. A lot of the people in the session were active in the party in some way. Some key points: Barnes had no message Barnes was flakey Lack of emphasis on signs from the party (we said signs shows enthusiasm) Poor communication with Latinos (south Milwaukee) ********ing Act Blue keeps spamming us and asking for more and more money I brought up how there was no on-line advertising for Barnes, and little for Evers, but lots for Johnson (several people nodded) Organization of volunteers needed to be better A few people (myself included) brought up how the voters were not respected as intelligent enough Most of the stuff was frustration about Barnes and the campaign, which I'm sure the hosts knew would occur, but there were also a lot of comments about the importance of the upcoming Supreme Court election in the Spring.
No kidding. I gave to about 10 campaigns across the country and my e-mail just blew up. I hope I've seen the last of Rev. Warnock's daily missives. (P.S. - I can't believe you guys talked me into donating to Val Demings!)
I told them that I didn't donate to the Barnes campaign because I didn't fully believe in him, but also because I didn't want to get spammed. I told them I did donate to the Warnock campaign to make Manchin not-relevant, and since then I was getting 5 to 10 emails a day. And I was the 4th or 5th person to complain. One person said they were going to stop donating because of all the emails.
If it is any consolation, Republicans have the same issue.. I have a distant relative that lives in Virginia that is apparently a Republican. Unfortunately for me, this relative's typos a lot and put in my email address when they donated to Youngkin.. So in addition to getting the PTA emails from their kid's school, I also get the living f**k spammed out of me by Republicans looking for donations...
