Unless this has been changed----- 15.5.1 Counters. A student-athlete shall be a counter and included in the maximum awards limitations set forth in this bylaw under the following conditions: 15.5.1.6 Aid After Departure of Head Coach -- A student-athlete who receives athletically related institutional financial aid in subsequent academic years after the departure of a head coach from the institution is not a counter, provided: (a) The student-athlete participated in the applicable sport and received athletically related institutional financial aid during the coach's tenure at the institution; and (b) The student-athlete does not participate in the applicable sport during subsequent academic years at the institution. 15.5.1.6.1 Subsequent Participation. If the student-athlete subsequently participates in the applicable sport at the institution, the student-athlete shall become a counter for all years during which athletically related institutional aid was received.
I am aware of this. My point is accurate. A coach cannot drop a kid on scholarhip without penalty. If the kid wants to keep their scholarship at the SEC school they can, and they still count against the program.
Reading this though, the athlete would have participated with the new coach in almost every scenario before they were cut. So that rule would not apply.
A little inside soccer for some of you guys. A number of programs write the 4-year scholarships as the following for players that may not be high impact: year 1: $xxxxx.xx - let’s say $10,000.00 Year 2: $0 Year 3: $0 year 4: $0 Year 5: $0 They then renew them yearly as any other scholarship would, or don’t. There’s no legislation against increasing or renewing, so this is done for a kid not receiving as much aid or maybe a kid you’re taking a chance on. Obviously not doing it for a national team pool kid, or kid you know will be dynamite, but for a mid/bottom roster kid, it’s an easy way around a 4-year scholarship. If your program is good enough, kids will still want to come. Not saying I agree with this, or here to get into an argument whether or not it happens, because it does happen at at least a few P5 programs i am familiar with.
Is it true that the University of Cincinnati might be looking to add Paul Riley to the coaching staff? All kinds of rumors out there. When are we going to get a new Hot Seat list?
Actually, ytrs, the reference to the athlete having participated during the coach’s tenure is not to the new coach’s tenure but rather during the departed coach’s tenure. Thus what you originally said is exactly correct.
Although there are probably some ADs who would hire him, a basic background check even by soccer ignorant people would put the kibosh on it. There's not a board of regents or university chancellor who would approve it. He's done coaching, I would hope.
Winwinchick, I get your joke (that others didn't). Riley would be a good fit with his background with the staff there at Cincinnati.
Not true-subsequent academic years. If hired in December, player would have the spring to prove themselves otherwise not be a counter or on the team the following fal
Is it fair to assume that a coach who's contract expires at the end of this year and has not yet been renewed / extended will probably not be renewed / extended without a winning season, or at least a better season than the last pre-COVID?
Depends how much the admins care but if the contract has ran down to the final year, and the year isn’t going well, it’s definitely a possibility the coach won’t be renewed.
I think this may be the situation at UMD. Complete guess but I'd bet Ray retires by the holiday break and Shannon Cirovski is brought back to coach.
Off the top of my head I think some of these programs are warm at a minimum. A few of these programs seem to have individuals that don’t have to worry about performance as they have struggled for 10 or more seasons. I don't know the contracts of any of these coaches so I don't know how many more years some have remaining. Still more season to go, could improve chances of making it to next season. University of Kentucky University of Rhode Island University of Maryland University of Delaware University of Maine IUPUI Villanova University University of Miami University of Akron Idaho State Indiana State Kansas State Morehead State College of Charleston Lafayette College Wagner College Purdue University Fort Wayne St. Bonaventure University Morehead State Interim- Cal State Northridge Tulsa LA Tech Pacific others?
Potentially add Stanford to the list the rumor is they are trying to find enough funds to make a splash and tempt Citowicki away from Montana. Supposed sticking point is his request for an unlimited personal meal plan at the campus cafeteria, and the mascot being changed from a cardinal to a blue and yellow parrot. More to come.
Yeah, they do seem pretty bad off, however I am not sure why some ended up with the italics, it just happened.
That list was stupid. Only ones I see having a chance at a coach being let go in the next 1-2 years are Miami and Maryland. Kentucky should be on that list but Curry is on a contract extension as has been stated on here multiple times. No reason to have mentioned any of the others.
I post these lists and they tend to be pretty accurate every year, but it’s not because I’m doing anymore than stating the obvious in many cases, or happen to know administrators at various universities. Perhaps stupid, but IMO all of these schools are worthy of a discussion, and we all have opinions, that’s why we have sites like Big Soccer to discuss and debate.
Maybe they could put the bird in the tree? If LA Tech opens their search up they may need to look at Gore from NSU. Mind you the LA Tech girls would have to adjust their line of sight as they will no longer need to look up when their coach is talking. I will keep you posted how the meal plan negotiations are going between Citowicki and the cardinals.
