Platini vs Maradona in 1979 An entertaining comparison by the French magazine ‘Mondial’ in August 1979 between Platini-Maradona through the eyes of the Italian defender Cabrini. At this juncture Platini was the darling of French football and Maradona the Golden boy of Argentinian. It was after the Argentinian NT had toured Europe but before the coronation of the FIFA Youth World Cup. Cabrini who had faced both players compared them in 10 aspects. The dribble, header, shot, deployment on the pitch, vision, the pass, the technique, the physical qualities, the influence on their teams and the experience. Dribble Maradona beat Platini in this area, since this was his greatest weapon. Platini was more of an organizar. Verdict: Maradona Heading Their heading was not their strengths and were viewed equal. Verdict: draw The shot Their shots are viewed differently, with Diego choosing more power to Platini’s delicate placement. In this aspect Platini is unsurpassed while Diego provides wicked speed to his shots. Verdict: draw. Deployment Both are excellent tactically, knowing how to maneuver in all areas at an distinct level. Verdict: Draw. Vision Platini has a geometric panorama. He can launch 40-50 yard passes on the money. Maradona has a more triangular view of the field, interchanging and exchanging passes in one-two patterns in tight spaces. Both are different and experts in their own way. Verdict: draw The passing game Platini predicates his game on long range passing while Diego on short electrical combinations. Verdict: draw Technical qualities Both are strong and show no real weaknesses. They are both tactically intelligent and physically apt. Their deployments over the pitch are of a high quality and are viewed as “super-class”. Verdict: Draw Physical qualities Platini is more lanky while Diego is robust. This aspect for Maradona enables him to be sturdy and withstand rough challenges. Both strong in their own ways. Verdict: Draw Influence over the game Both are indispensable. Although Argentina did win the WC without Diego it was on home soil. France without Platini would be potentially void of his technique. Verdict: Draw Experience Inevitably Maradona is only 18-years-old while Platini is 24 and with a WC participation under his belt. Diego is surging at the moment and with Platini both represent two of the most talented and best players in the world. Verdict: Platini Final verdict Cabrini had only seen Maradona twice. Once on TV vs the Netherlands and once in person on the same pitch. He has viewed Platini more but considers them equal overall. He would like to see Diego more often. Verdict: Draw So Cabrini had gone with diplomacy and preferred to appease both sides. In any event, the magazine Mondial had these entertaining comparisons with players back in the days and it was according to my knowledge the first comparison between these two players that would go on to have a personal rivalry through the media in the mid-1980s.
https://news.sky.com/story/amp/dieg...harged-with-involuntary-manslaughter-12312380 A complete and utter disgrace
Here is an excellent description of all his games https://www.amazon.es/dp/B08VNY7LD4...&asin=B08VNY7LD4&revisionId=&format=4&depth=1
A summary of his first five seasons (only club) Season 1976 Season 1977 Season 1978 Season 1979 Season 1980
In the 21/05/1978 game vs Chacarita, Argentinos Juniors won 5-0, Maradona scored 3 goals, the other two was from Jorge O.López, one from penalty and the other from a cross made by Favert, the penalty López scored came from a foul on Maradona, I don't consider that as an assist, but maybe that is the missing assist
I just looked at the stats from "Maradona Obras Completas", thats why i said 10...i can double check the game by game Recap of the 1978 season if you want. Have you already done this?
@MJWizards This is the game in which I could not find the assist, one goal from J O.López come from a penalty and the other from a cross from Favret, if this is right there is no assist from Maradona in this game.
A day like today but 35 years ago, Diego Maradona astonished the world with his most memorable goals against England at the Azteca stadium in Mexico City. This thread had a lot potential when at least a majority of its posts were by Vegan10. Is it possible for a moderator to create a parallel thread consisting just of Vegan10 posts?
Hello @Vegan10 Do you know where I could find an entire excel files with every match Maradona has played like this one about Pelé ? https://www.mediafire.com/file/rismbckyibls1i6/Pelé_all_official_games.xlsx/file
Hi mate, unfortunately I haven’t found one. There is a 1987 annual SuperFutbol Argentinian magazine that listed mostly every game from 1976-1987 (after the 1986/87 Serie A campaign) but for his entire career no.
https://www.tycsports.com/al-angulo/mano-dios-goles-maradona-puno-id373299.html A list of Maradona handballs. This author (Andres Burgos) for TyC sports has written a lot about Maradona. Another good source of Diego-related information is the twitter account Diego10Querido. https://twitter.com/Diego10Querido?ref_src=twsrc^google|twcamp^serp|twgr^author
Hey @Vegan10, there's this Twitter account that could help you for Diego's career match reports, since it reports Maradona's day-to-day life since his debut for Argentinos Juniors. Unfortunately, his info only goes until May of 1982 (for now) but it can help. The account is https://twitter.com/OscarBarnade The info is scattered throughout many threads, but it's there regardless. Here's him detailing Diego's game against Racing after his return to Argentine football, for example: Día 1062 de 16107.
Actually, the info is all unified under one thread, though there are some sub-threads that convey the same info but are shorter (info for a week for example, added in the main thread).
Excellent! The former SuperFutbol magazine and Clarín newspaper correspondent has gathered info using Goles, El Gráfico and Clarín sources. It will be useful for the thread. Thanks!
Now thanks to @Double Six, we are able to cross compare different sources using Oscar Barnade’s work. The journalist used lots of info using the magazine of “Goles”, which is limited in my sources. In his thread, I came across the final rankings of the 1979 Metropolitan tournament of the magazines Goles. Both Goles and El Gráfico reached the same conclusions. (The El Gráfico final rankings listed in my quote above were calculated thanks to @Titanlux).
He also uses 'La Hoja del Lunes', which can be seen numerous times throughout Maradona's match reports, it even has its own ratings (a 1-10 system with a similar style to El Gráfico).
