Yes during the war its true. The aftermath though, the 50's & 60's , there was an economic boom for the USA. It was all because of the war effort.

From what I always recalled, the players club pays a players salary. The national team only pays a per diem amount for a given tournament or match. At least that's the way it used to be. I think there was also a pool of money given for Men's WC games...
