With the discussion of a possible USMNT cap for Fafa Picault, whose maternal grandfather is Max Antoine who played for Haiti, I was wondering who in USMNT history was the son (or grandson) of a national team from another country. Here are the ones I spotted on my first run through: Darlington Nagbe - father Joe Nagbe (Liberia) Joe Gyau - grandfather Nana Gyau (Ghana) (father Philip) Philip Gyau - father Nana Gyau (Ghana) Teal Bunbury - father Alex Bunbury (Canada) In the wings with our YNT: Fernando Arce, Jr. - father Fernando Arce (Mexico) Tim Weah - father George Weah (Liberia) Jonathan Klinsmann - father Jurgen Klinsmann (Germany) And possibly going the other direction: Ariel Lassiter (Costa Rica) - son of Roy Lassiter (US) Others?
Hugo Perez came from a long line of Salvadoran footballers. Did any of them (father, grandfather) represent El Salvador?
In your "waiting in the wings" category, you can include Shaq Moore. His father, Wendell Moore, played for T&T.
That's probably a different category -- father/son USMNT combos. Taylor Twellman & his dad also fit that category.
So do James Brown and George Brown. None of Walter Bahr's sons was capped for the USMNT, but two of them were for the Olympic team.
Future considerations................David Ferreira's son, Oscar Pareja's son, & Blas Perez' son (as well as others) all play in the FCD academy right now. [In various points in their citizenship timelines.] Ferreira's son is the cream of that crop.
Bart McGhee has three caps and a goal for the USA in the 1930 World Cup against Belgium., His father James McGhee was the first player from Hibs to make the Scotland national team in 1886. Bart is in the US Soccer Hall of Fame.
Since this post is a year old, its worth adding on that Jesus Ferreira has gotten his citizenship. Awaiting clearance from FIFA. He'll be a USYNTer. Add another waiting in the wings...................... One of the youth stars at FCD's academy right now is Dante Sealy. He's Scott Sealy's son, and Scott had 25 caps for T&T. Dante is already getting USYNT callups.
An updated list: Alecko Eskandarian - father Andranik Eskandarian (Iran) Bart McGhee - father James McGhee (Scotland) Darlington Nagbe - father Joe Nagbe (Liberia) Fafa Picault - grandfather Max Antoine (Haiti) Janusz Michallik - father Kris Michallik (Poland) Joe Gyau - grandfather Nana Gyau (Ghana) (father Philip) John Kerr, Jr. - father John Kerr, Sr. (Canada) Philip Gyau - father Nana Gyau (Ghana) Teal Bunbury - father Alex Bunbury (Canada) In the wings with our YNT: Dante Sealy - father Scott Sealy (T&T) Fernando Arce, Jr. - father Fernando Arce (Mexico) Jesus Ferreira - son of David Ferreira (Colombia) Jonathan Klinsmann - father Jurgen Klinsmann (Germany) Shaq Moore - father Wendell Moore (T&T) Tim Weah - father George Weah (Liberia) And possibly going the other direction: Ariel Lassiter (Costa Rica) - son of Roy Lassiter (US)
Another waiting in the wings from FC Dallas. Diego Pareja, Oscar Pareja's son (Colombian international of course), plays for the U16 DA team. He's a regular on the best U16DA team in the country, but I can't really report whether he's a USYNT prospect or not. He's a 2000, who I believe was born in Dallas.
Hmmmmmmmmmm............... I believe you're thinking of Mike Renshaw. Mike and Cooper Sr. are close friends I believe. Were teammates on the Dallas Tornado. Haven't heard much about Cooper Sr. since his heart attack in 2013.
Yes, Mike is a regular poster on here. We used to have a number of players and players' parents post. Unfortunately, it is difficult to hear criticism of family and friends, and Mike stopped posting for a bit due about the Coopers. Some folks would just give constructive criticism, but there are always internet warriors playing Championship Manager who take it too far
It's nice to have family and friends of players contribute around here, and it's true that it can't be pleasant hearing excessive criticism. But in some ways Mike chose to make things difficult for himself. Like in his very first post when he claimed Kenny was better than McBride, and his constant bashing of other forwards (like EJ) who he saw as competition. I mean, I was also a proponent of Cooper for the national team, but Mike tended to go overboard at times with his bias. Although I guess you have to say he kept things interesting.
