..cause all you want to do is zoom your zoom zoom in the boom boom!!! There are so many, including all the aforementioned, but I'm convinced its "As" - known by some as Always - by Stevie Wonder. Reasons... its not sappy at all, rather quite uptempo and joyful; is a beautiful peace of musicianship; lyrically powerful; and the LOVE he speaks of could be for a woman, sibling, parent, friend, etc. I've cried listening to it. Just a beautiful song.
Nice to see so many people taking this seriously. Anyhow, in no particular order: Northern Sky - Nick Drake The Street Where You Live - Lerner & Lowe Taking My Life In Your Hands - Elvis Costello w / Brodsky Quartet Strangers When We Meet - The Smithereens The Letter - The Box Tops (which yes, shows up on every "best of" song list I ever put together) Angels - Robbie Williams (which is really about his mother, but does a love song have to be about romantic love?) Night and Day - Cole Porter Is That Love - Squeeze That's eight. I'm sure I will think of others later.
For me, lyrics are what make love songs great, because musically they are all pretty much cut from the same cloth. So, in no particular oder... 100,000 Fireflies -- Magnetic Fields I have a mandolin I play it all night long It makes me want to kill myself I also have a dobro Made in some mountain range Sounds like a mountain range in love But when I turn up the tone on my electric guitar I'm afraid of the dark without you close to me I went out to the forest and caught A hundred thousand fireflies As they ricochet round the room They remind me of your starry eyes. Someone else's might not have made me so sad But this is the worst night I ever had, 'Cause I'm afraid of the dark without you close to me You won't be happy with me, But give me one more chance You won't be happy anyway Why do we still live here In this repulsive town? All our friends are in New York Why do we keep shrieking, When we mean soft things? We should be whispering all the time... Everlong -- Foo Fighters Out to Get You -- James Hey Jupiter -- Tori Amos I Will -- The Beattles Kathy's Song -- Simon & Garfunkle
In no particular order: My Little Corner of the World - Yo La Tengo (our wedding song) I Threw It All Away - Bob Dylan Girl From the North Country - Bob Dylan with Johnny Cash Love Minus Zero/No Limit - Bob Dylan Isis - Bob Dylan Dress Sexy at My Funeral - Smog Seeing Other People - Belle & Sebastian Let's Stay Together - Al Green Sometimes Always - Jesus & Mary Chain with Hope Sandoval I Think I Need a New Heart - Magnetic Fields If I went out to 20, I'd have about 8 more Magnetic Fields tunes on the list.
