    More is not necessarilly better.;)

When I mentioned Di Stéfano, the 'bulk' of his career I referred to was quantity & quality wise (and IMO he had a similar importance to Argentina & Spain).

Puskas' really great period though (even having played more games for RM & having been capped for Spain) was undoudbtedly playing for Honved & The Mighty Magyars from 1952 to 1956 .

Yes, he qualifies - but for Hungary.

PS: Garrincha also played hundreds of games for Milionários (Colombia) ...

It is slightly unfair to English clubs to rule out players from Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland for the purposes of this thread, since the UK is one 'country' despite having four national teams. Ireland, though, I'm not so sure about, seeing as how it's been independent since 1921.

Also: what if someone were to try to do, say, Red Star Belgrade or a Russian team?

There should be enough English players, with the history English clubs have. But maybe they can do an all British club team. No Irish. (though I guess Northern Ireland would be ok.)

And no players from the Malvinas. :D

    Ok,

But Northern Irish, Welsh & Scottish players don't play for England in world tournaments.

Making them 'all English' simply erases NI, Wales & Scotland & their highly traditional clubs from the map - which is even more unfair.

It is also nowhere near an all-time XI.

The Home Nations are a unique set of circumstances within FIFA. I stuck Ireland in brackets because while they are a lot closer to the UK than most of the other neighbouring countries from the other listed clubs they are a separate country and do not have the same freedom of movement as those within the UK. All Ireland sporting teams further muddy the water.

As did I but Chelsea are not an elite side and what I posted previously stands.

    Martin Buchan is Scottish.
Duncan Edwards is not a left-back.
You should make clear that it is John Aston, Jr.
David Beckham belongs nowhere near an all-time XI.
I think it is too soon for Wayne Rooney.

Yeah, I agree. That is why for Boca I made a separate team for the players from the last decade. As a fan you want to recognize them, but it's too soon to make them into all-timers. Rooney may become one, when he's done. But not yet.

Duncan Edwards was a half-back. If you want to know what modern position he would have played in it would have been a box-to-box midfielder. In no way shape or form was he a left wing-back.

David Beckham was good when he first broke through but his career at Man Utd steadily declined at the end. He was replaced by Solskjaer and eventually shipped out. I am not sure if he would make my top 5 for his position. There are several options available who have roughly the same standing.

Wayne Rooney is only in his fifth season at Man Utd and has had injury issues throughout. I do not think he has done enough at this stage. Nor is he a 'footballing god'.

I included Ferdinand and Neville in my XI. Scholes was very close as well. While Ferdinand only has seven seasons at the club they have been his prime seasons and at a very high level. Neville has 17 seasons and Scholes has 15 seasons. If you are going to include recent players then they need to either have longevity or prime form. Rooney is not there yet.

Yes, but take, for example, George Best. He was a product of Manchester United's youth system and played the vast majority of his professional career for them - should he really be excluded from their all-time XI simply because he was born in Belfast?

    OK,

    Agreed.

To all rules there are exceptions & I'm not the one who's going to deny it.

Cases like Best's, Messi's must be considered.

Both arrived to both clubs as kids (Best 15 yo, Messi even less)

It's true: if they are not MU's or Barcelona's they'll be clubless.

But they are very special cases.

We'll keep a list of those exceptions (with wich I hope you help me) that I believe won't be too long.

    So:

    Best & Messi...liberated to MU & Barça! :p

you will end up making quite a few such exceptions in the case of british players; like Giggs for example.

    The nationality criterion holds.

There'll naturally be exceptions (and I'll be more than pleased to aknowlege them).

Since I just can't go through all of them, I'll let the job to the 'bothered' ones.:D

Maybe England is the country with the biggest number and there will probably be other countries' clubs involved too.

Maybe at the end we can even organize an 'All-Time Foreign Club XI'.:p

Which so far has Di Stéfano, who can be shared by RM & River Plate (for 4 reasons: double nationality/Copa América winner for Arg while playing for River, where he was raised/best club period in RM/played for Spanish NT - although IMO the claim he's mostly Argentinian is the strongest), Best (Northern Irish but just played for MU), Altafini (who can be shared by Palmeiras & Milan, double nationality, played for Brazil 1958 WC & Italy 1962 WC), Messi (Arg but just played for Barça), and, OK, Giggs (Welsh, idem for MU).

Giggs might have an additional problem: although he had his best moments in MU, he was raised in City, and MU's main rival might have a claim there (maybe they could 'share' him).

What we can't have though is people fighting in the thread because Tevez plays in MU, was Brz champion for Corinthians but was raised in Boca type of thing.

Tevez was raised in & got famous with Boca and if even his best moments were in Corinthians or will be in MU, he'll alway's be Boca's.

The same with Dinho towards Barcelona/Milan.

Or Pato & Kaká with Milan.

Sorry, catalanes & milanesi, but they'll always be Grêmio, Inter (RGS, BRZ) & São Paulo's.

    Period.

Upon retirement I would probably find a spot in the team for both Xavi Hernández (perhaps a starter) and Carles Puyol (likely on the subs bench).
As great as Lionel Messi appears to look, he's still only 21. Will easily slot into the starting XI if he remains committed to the club and continues to produce.

    Paulino Alcántara:
    Born in the Phillippines.
Youngest ever player to start and score for the club (aged 15 years, 4 months and 18 days).
Played 13 seasons total for the Blaugrana.
    Barcelona's all-time leading scorer with 357 goals in 357 matches (!)
Made 5 international appearances for Spain. Also appeared for the Catalan XI.
    Profile on the club's website

I trust he is eligible for the team. :)

Schuster, who only played 2-3 seasons with the senior team?
I would think Hannes Löhr is much more deserving of a place, imho.

How about Hans Sturm and/or Heinz Simmet? Do you know much about them? I've heard their names but am not too familiar with them.

    Absolutely.

His first club was Barcelona, where he was raised & played for 14 years.

    Played for the Spanish NT.

    Paulino IS Barça.:)
