York City have confirmed that they have made a five-figure bid for Ebbsfleet United defender Darius Charles.

Charles, 21, was Ebbsfleet's player of the Year last season, having initially signed on loan from Brentford at the end of the 2007/08 season.

But York boss Martin Foyle now wants him for a fee understood to be £10,000.

The bid will be voted on by the owners of Ebbsfleet - the subscription website MyFootballClub - who have until Thursday morning (0945 BST) to decide.

Ealing-born Charles, who came through the ranks at Griffin Park, played 42 times in four seasons for Brentford.

But he has been a regular since dropping into Conference football and caught the eye playing for Ebbsfleet when York drew 0-0 at Stonebridge Road in March.

He made history by becoming the first player recruited in such a way when Ebbsfleet's member voted to buy him from Brentford for a reported £25,000 in January.
