The USL season starts this weekend with games on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. https://www.uslsoccer.com/usl-schedule Feel free to discuss offseason-y stuff at the link below until then -- and then move to this thread for player, team and league news. https://www.bigsoccer.com/threads/ynt-eligible-nasl-usl-players-2017-18-offseason-thread.2077745/
Lamar Batista has the distinction of being the only thread-eligible player to be ineligible for the opening match of this season because of an incident last season. Good times.
Uly Llanez played 30 minutes for Los Dos in a 2-0 loss at Colorado Springs Switchbacks. Had a nice pass to forward, whose shot was saved by GK. It will be interesting to see what happens with him in the next year. He will play pro somewhere, whether that's LAG, Los Dos or perhaps in Mexico.

Don't let him fool ya. He didn't run anywhere, let alone to every one of these games. He sat at his computer and looked them up online. You're welcome.
Check out @LAGalaxyAcademy’s Tweet: This ball from @uly_soccer7 in last night's @LAGalaxyII match 👀👀👀 pic.twitter.com/rAJoN2DWU4— LA Galaxy Academy (@LAGalaxyAcademy) March 18, 2018
He should do more of this. I think he has good technique, and he can play some passes like that, but he seems mostly to try to dribble through the whole defense whenever he gets the ball, and often ignores the runs of teammates. Its almost like the Akinola approach, but with considerably more skill.
Bethlehem Steel beat Richmond 4-1 today. BTH - Mark McKenzie '99 -- 90 BTH - Matthew Real '99 -- 90 BTH - Derrick Jones '97 -- 87, goal BTH - *Issa Rayyan '00 -- 6 BTH - *Brenden Aaronson '00 -- unused sub It feels like a solid number of players got on the field this week. Two MLS2 clubs were idle: Real Monarchs and ATL 2. Now that RSL's academy has moved to Utah, will we see the Monarchs use more young players? With most of their 97s having matriculated to first team playing time last season, they gave very few minutes to YNT-eligible players. One might expect that to change given that they have academy teams drawing YNT interest in Richie Ledezma, Glademir Mendoza, and Sebastian Soto. ATL has some first-teamers who should get USL minutes (Robinson, Bello, Goslin, Kunga, maybe Vazquez too), some USL contract players (Samuel, Lopez) and plenty of academy candidates as well.
Nice run and finish by the unskilled Derick Jones. Disclaimer: you're going to want to watch this.We don't deserve you, @21_djones 🙌🙌.#BSTvRIC pic.twitter.com/OpOQN831MO— USL Championship (@USLChampionship) March 18, 2018
Still an argument to be made that Jones is an 8 and not a 6, though, as Ramos used him. Certainly he has almost always played the 8 or the 8/10 hybrid when I have watched him for Bethlehem (which is only a handful of times, but still).
I don't think he has the discipline to play as a #6. He could turn into a decent ground-covering #8, but I don't know that he has the passing or soccer IQ to play for the NT.
Just a thought, but given that there's only one pro lower division in the US this year, couldn't we have called this the USL thread?
It's also where news from 2018 about the NASL, USL D3 and anything else that comes up (maybe like the NISA) can go.
In this article about why MLS clubs are and aren't fielding USL teams, this nugget confirms the Orlando City B-to-D3 rumors: The Revs are looking at a partnership with a potential USL team in Hartford: Can't be worse than the epic Revs/Rhinos partnership!
Since Balerion is being a damn slack-ass this week, you'll have to settle for my USL report and hope I didn't miss any YNT players. Injured? S2 has been rolling with an all-academy CM so far and done okay with it, seemingly. Real Monarchs didn't have any academy players in their 18. It will be disappointing if that continues all season. Their U19s have won 15 out of 19 games and have scored 72 while conceding only 18. There are players ready for the next challenge.
People are posting in two different threads on the same topic. This thread title didn't catch my eye to be honest. But should the threads be merged? Posts moved over here?
I can only speak for myself, but I was under the impression this thread was started for the 2018 season. Hence I am posting here.
