Manny Perez had a goal and an assist tonight for NC State against WIlliam & Mary. The Pack are 4-0-0 and Perez has one assist in each game to go along with the goal. Teammate David Loera (Orlando City) had an assist as well tonight and he also has 4 assists. The good news is Perez is playing well. The not-so-good news is State might not want to release him for qualifying, which is less of an issue on a bad team. If I have time tomorrow, I'll try and provide some updates on college players who've been called into camps in the past year or two.
Stats for the college players called into the current U20 and U19 camps. Franky Amaya (00), Fr. M, UCLA - 3 games, 0 starts, 0 goals, 1 assist Griffin Dorsey (99), So. F/M, Indiana - 4 games, 4 starts, 2 goals, 0 assists (2017: 23/23, 3/6) Manny Perez (99), So. D.M, NC State - 4 games, 4 starts, 1 goal, 4 assists (2017: 15/15, 5/4) Jean-Julien Foe Nuphaus (00), Fr. D, California - 3 games, 3 starts, 0 goals, 0 assists Declan McGlynn (00), Fr. M, Seattle Univ. - 3 games, 0 starts, 0 goals, 1 assist Johan Penaranda (00), Fr. GK, Pittsburgh - 3 games, 3 starts, 1.09 GAA, .625 save pct. Carlo Ritaccio (00), Fr. D, Akron - 3 games, 3 starts, 0 goals, 0 assists Ironically, Akron plays Seattle this Friday.
Early in the season as it is, 80 feels like a low-ish number of minutes for someone who seems to be of meaningful interest to Ramos and the U20 program. (Hundley and Vasquez have both played much more as true freshmen field players.) With that said, UCLA's minutes seem fairly top-heavy so far (after only 3 games) and that seems likely to change. Sundquist and YNT sophomore Paoli have barely played at all.
For Clemson Charlie Asensio has played every minute for Clemson at LB. RB has been pretty bad for Clemson all year, but nobody has said anything about LB. Grayson Barber has started at winger and has 1 assist John Murphy has been a frequently used sub scoring a goal. Observers seem to think that he looks really crisp and has a chance to be a really good player. Another FR, Chris Matlashewski, who didn't play DA Soccer (no team around Myrtle Beach) and primarily played HS Soccer, has started 3 of 4 games and has an assist. James Brighton hasn't played yet. Injured, Redshirt, beaten out? I don't know.
A small thing, but perhaps of interest: The Terps have begun without their most highly touted recruit, Brayan Padilla, who's sidelined with an undisclosed injury. http://www.dbknews.com/2018/09/06/m...eshman-attack-gielen-samuels-lansade-padilla/

Matt Hundley has 2G, 3A in 369 minutes. He's too good for this level. Colorado has nothing to play for the rest of the season. Why is he not getting regular minutes right now in MLS?
Two FCDers commit to Colombia................ Both have been at USYNT camps.Toledo most recently with the U16s and Collodi most recently with the U14s. 1040654796569681922 is not a valid tweet id 1040637519187140609 is not a valid tweet id
Anyway, back to guys who are in college What's up with this Derek Dodson fellow? He's having a good start to his second year at G'Town after a strong freshman campaign. http://georgetown.sidearmsports.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=8673 Doesn't appear to be HG-eligible. He's a '98.
Matt Hundley scored again. I think I said he could challenge for best player in college soccer. I'm sticking with that, and doubling down on it.
So while I was looking stats for a post on the 97s/98s still in college that I'll post in a couple of days, I discovered that two YNTs from the Sounders academy are at, of all places, Tyler Junior College in Texas. They are 98 Habib Barry, a 98 who was switched between CB and F and who played last season at Seattle University. And 99 D Jake Morris is also at Tyler. He's a freshman. Both are starting. Tyler isn't your run of the mill JuCo. It's won several national titles and produced players like Dom Dwyer, Jamaican national teamer Oniel Fisher and former South Africa (and Leeds) forward Davide Somma. Current UCLA stud (and likely high MLS pick) Mohammed Kamara also went there.
Out of curiosity I looked at the recent top few JuCo rosters. Top-ranked Monroe, a NYC-area school, is almost entirely non-U.S. players. https://www.monroecollegemustangs.com/roster.aspx?path=msoc& Tyler also has a global flavor. http://www.apacheathletics.com/roster/14/1 I couldn't easily find this year's roster for #3 Phoenix, but last year it was mainly Arizona and Mexico. https://athletics.phoenixcollege.edu/sports/mens-soccer-roster-2017-18 Salt Lake has a pretty strong in-state contingent. https://slccbruins.com/roster.aspx?path=msoc Ratings: http://njcaa.org/sports/msoc/2018-19/div1/polls
FCD academy alum Brecc Evans (staring centerback for the U19s over the past couple of seasons) scored his first goal for Cal Poly. Sean Goode netted his third goal of the season, and Brecc Evans added the first of his @CalPoly career, lifting @CPMustangs to a 2-0 win in front of a crowd of 1,613 at Spanos Stadium 🐎 #RideHighhttps://t.co/etABwCGP0a— Cal Poly Men’s Soccer (@CPMensSoccer) September 23, 2018
Central Florida soph Cal Jennings, tied for second in the nation in NCAA D1 goals with 9, is a '97 and the top thread-eligible goalscorer in the division. http://ucfknights.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=34100&ATCLID=211734844
So the top defense, statistically, in D-I is UVa, which has allowed one goal in 7 games for a 0.13 goals-against-average. Their defense is anchored by a trio of YNT-eligible American players in redshirt sophomore Colin Shutler (98), freshman CB Aboubakar Keita (00) and sophomore CB Henry Kessler (98). A product of the Crew academy, Keita has gotten some U19 looks this cycle. Shutler, who got some U19 looks last cycle, appears to have not played USSDA soccer before UVa. Kessler, who is 6-3, spent some time with the Red Bulls academy but didn't finish his youth career with them so I don't know if he's homegrown eligible. He's apparently a tremendous student and on pace to graduate early so he may turn pro with athletic eligibility remaining. I doubt many collegiate players make the U23 team but if they look at some, these guys may be included.
Here are the American goal-scorers in the top 10 in D-I right now. t3. Cal Jennings (97), Jr., Central Florida - 8 games, 10 goals, 3 assists t3. Shinya Kadono (97), Sr., California - 10 games, 10 goals, 2 assists t6. Benji Michel (97), Jr., Portland - 10 games, 9 goals, 1 assist t6. Alec Philippe (97), Jr., Wright State - 9 games, 9 goals, 4 assists (Portland and Wright State are undefeated.) Jennings played club soccer for Georgia United, which was absorbed by Atlanta United so they may have inherited his HG rights. Michel played for Orlando's academy and they presumably have his HG rights. Kadono was born in Japan but grew up in the US. Philippe was born in Haiti (his dad is involved in politics there) but grew up in the US and is also supposedly a US citizen.
Two more goals and an assist last night for Cal Jennings. He's up to 12 and 4 in just 9 games. Could be a late-bloomer to keep an eye on.
Perhaps interestingly, they're posting results against some much better-known programs. (Beat SMU, WVU, PSU.) http://ucfknights.com/SportSelect.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=34100&SPID=181616&SPSID=1115445 They've got a pretty international roster and a coach with a college-heavy bio that includes an assistant job at UNC when they won it all in 2001. (Man, David Stokes!) https://goheels.com/news/2001/12/16/205496080.aspx He also played some lower-level outdoor after college.
Jennings was All-Conference last year and appears to be a pretty good player. Is Jennings truly a MLS level prospect of just scoring lots of goals as a pretty good player on a pretty strong team playing lots of over matched teams? I certainly don't know. Same question on Omir Fernandez for Wake Forest. SO out of Red Bulls Academy has 8 goals and 3 assists in 11 games. Wake is great though and beating good teams convincingly week in and week out and somebody has to do the scoring. He does play over other talented players though like Justin McMaster, Kyle Holcomb and Aristotle Zarris, but last year Mark McKenzie didn't play much for Wake so that might not even be a fair metric.
FWIW, I no longer think Perez is going to make the U-20 team. His only chance is as an injury alternate. From what I understand, Dest and Lindsey are the team's right backs.
Turns out you fall behind when you decide to stick around in the NCAA while your competition found good developmental spots.
Shocking. It'll be interesting to see if any collegians make the qualifying roster. Trey Muse would seem to be a strong candidate as a backup GK. I wouldn't be surprised if he's the only one, however.
